Here’s some great news for those of you looking for better ways to edit your YouTube videos, try YouTube’s new video editor.

I for one have been looking for solutions such as this because my desktop computer takes about 2-3 hours to render videos.  Instead, now I can just upload my videos straight to YouTube, then do a bit of editing there.

With this new editor, you can:

• Combine multiple videos you’ve uploaded to create a new longer video
• Trim the beginning and/or ending of your videos
• Add soundtracks from our AudioSwap library of tens of thousands of songs

I did a blog post couple months back that using Google’s Chrome browser is one of the ways to make your internet browsing faster.

It’s true, if you haven’t really used Chrome before, try it.  It’s much faster than Firefox, Safari, and IE.

Chrome Browser Takes 7% of World’s Browser Market!

The federal government is reportedly poking around Apple’s requirement that software developers only use its–or neutral–programming tools.
The New York Post reports that the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission are pondering an antitrust inquiry into Section 3.3.1 in Apple’s iPhone 4.0 software developer kit license agreement.

I think Apple has gone a bit too far as Flash is still an important part of our web browsing experience (until HTML5 is standardized and used everywhere).

Even I personally own an old Mac Powerbook that runs Ubuntu but I don’t use it because flash is not supported for my Powerbook’s line of CPUs.

HTML5 may be coming along rather rapidly but the percentage of flash sites that don’t support HTML5 are among the norm.

Even many renowned publishers like Wired and PCWorld are saying Jobs has gone way too far this time:

Don’t get me wrong: I think HTML5 is the future, too (eventually). I also believe poorly written Flash applications are the scourge of the Web. But I’ve also seen plenty of useful Flash apps, and they seem to be getting better. What’s wrong with giving users a choice?

It all boils down to one thing, a choice for the end-user to have flash or not.

The one thing I don’t understand is that Apple can easily put a “button” that can enable/disable flash so the user has a “choice” to enable it or disable it. There’s no good argument against this that Apple can simply ban flash altogether.

At least now it’s in the hands of the government to decided whether Apple is being a Nazi-camp.

Apparently she thinks that her company’s far more successful web search rival needs to grow by the size of Yahoo every year in order to remain interesting. Given the rapidly diminishing size of Yahoo, that shouldn’t be too hard for Google to accomplish.

I have always felt that Google’s dominance in search engine market lead to their dominance in online advertising through Google Adsense/Adwords, which the author uses currently to make a living online.

Also, Google IS diversifying through their Android mobile operating system, which is becoming widely popular plus their purchase of the mobile advertising company AdMob could be pivotal in future “mobile” advertising, which is still in relative beginning stages.

A lot of people might also say Google’s YouTube purchase is not profitable (yet) but even YouTube is in hatching stages, it just started growing and Google is the right company to catapult it to another level. (Read my post on Future of YouTube)

Anyways, my advice to Yahoo, “focus” on search market and Yahoo will someday again be able to compete with Google. As for now, Yahoo has too much “portal”-like on their search engine, driving people to do other things than search.

Yahoo’s CEO Advises Google!

Of course, the problem lies here that the users who bought the PS3 never “agreed” to not being able to use linux.  After Sony finds out that users have been installing linux to hack it and use it as something else, they decided to cut off linux users completely.

I guess in the long run this could make Sony more money but the point is that users rights were violated and now there’s a class-action suit against Sony. I think Sony has to accept their mistakes and let the linux be on PS3s again.

I love Sony products but this time, I will have to root for Linux users who didn’t have a choice but lose their Linux OS on their PS3s.

And for those of you who want to install linux on your PS3 (and hopefully by the time you read this Sony has re-enabled linux os PS3), try this guide here.

The suit, filed on April 27 by Anthony Ventura of California, seeks to redress Sony for the “intentional disablement of the valuable functionality originally advertised as available” for the Playstation 3. The disabling of Linux support is not only in breach of the sales contract between Sony and its customers, the suit says, but also a deceptive business practice “perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers.”

Sony publicly stated the removal of the feature was for security reasons, however, the lawsuit says the company was more concerned with potential piracy.

“On information and belief, contrary to Sony’s statement, the ’security concerns’ did not involve a threat to PS3 users, but rather reflected Sony’s concerns that the Other OS feature might be used by ‘hackers’ to copy and/or steal gaming and other content.”

Sony Gets Sued for Disabling Linux!

Google has been reportedly working on Google TV, powered by Android since its announcement couple months ago.

Looks like it won’t be too long before Google TV could be found everywhere as now Samsung in jumping the wagon.  Whereas it took Samsung a longer time to jump on Google’s Android platforms for smartphone market, it seems like they have recognized Google’s dominance over commercial open-source platforms.

Personally, I think this is heading in the right direction.  I know Apple TVs never became too popular (probably not the right time) but I Google TVs could potentially change everything we do with out TVs.

Microsoft sells 100 MILLION licensees of its newest operating system Windows 7 and Steve Ballmer couldn’t be happier.  Of course, I personally think Microsoft has actually done a good job with Windows 7, revamping their Vista failure image.

One of the features I like about Windows 7 is the fact that it’s “backward-compatible” with older version of Windows XP and Vista.

Plus, many of the Windows Vista drivers are compatible with Windows 7.  There’s still lots of driver-support for older computers (if the vendor doesn’t provide it) but apart from driver issues, Windows 7 is definitely the wave of the future for PCs.

Don’t forget about Ubuntu though also, I have been using Ubuntu more often and have to say Ubuntu is on its way to the hands of the public masses soon too if not already.

Windows 7 Selling Like Hotcakes!

Google gets “nested” labels as of today and I am really excited as I use labels a lot.

You can create complex hierarchies of labels if that’s the way you like to organize your mail, and you can expand/collapse labels to save space. You’ll always be able to tell whether a given label contains unread messages in its collapsed child labels by looking at whether it’s bold or not.

For those of you Diggers out there, you will be happy to learn that Digg app is now officially available for all Android-based smartphones including the Nexus One.

I happened to digg a lot myself, this will be rather interesting as I can digg on the go faster/better.

Using the app is pretty straightforward: tapping on a story opens it in the Android’s native web browser, with the handy additions of a Digg toolbar at the top and thumbs up/down buttons at the bottom. To the right of each story is an arrow that lets you view comments left by other Digg users. Unfortunately, you can’t yet leave comments from the Android app (nor can you from the iPhone app), but Digg expects this to change with the next release of its API.

Digg Launches Android Digg App!

This is a great move on Time Warner’s part, I think every ISP should follow suit as giving free WiFi could be an incentive to sign up for their home DSL services.

Plus with Sprint’s 4G WiMax rolling out to many cities later this year, ISP will have to deal with a big challenge of faster download/uploads from WiMax, probably have to lower their monthly subscription costs as a result. Btw, WiMax is so efficient that it won’t cost you more than regular DSL, might be even less to its efficient infrastructure.

In the long run, I think Google’s Android-based phones will take off more because of it. By offering revenue share, carriers have more reasons to promote Google’s products.

On the other side of the globe, Apple does not offer revenue share and they are missing on the larger pie of our mobile economy. It’s a simple idea, feed the hunters and they will hunt for you.

I think this is a great move on GoDaddy’s as privacy is such a big issue for Americans and other democratic countries. I for one, wouldn’t want my personal information passed to others, even if that’s the government.

Privacy issues are one of the most serious issues here in America and I am very glad that companies like Google and GoDaddy are going out of their way to protect individual’s rights.

Of course, China can have their own privacy laws as it’s their country but I think if China wants to open up more internet trade, they must be willing to compromise with democratic countries on privacy and human rights issues.

Christine Jones, executive vice president of Go Daddy, said the company was concerned about privacy after Chinese officials requested photo identification and signatures of its customers. For the first time, she said, Go Daddy had been asked to retroactively obtain documentation for individuals who had registered a domain name.

“We’re concerned about the chilling effect,” Ms. Jones said. “We made the decision that we didn’t want to act as an agent of the Chinese government.”

I think this brings the question that the White House should employ better passwords and password reminder questions for the future.

The 25-year-old is said to have hacked into the micro-blogging website, by simply guessing users’ passwords.

Some companies want to limit choice for users by extending trade mark law to encompass the use of keywords in online advertising. Ultimately they want to be able to exercise greater control over the infomation available to users by preventing other companies from advertising when a user enters their trade mark as a search query. In other words, controlling and restricting the amount of information that users may see in response to their searches.

Today, the Court confirmed that Google has not infringed trade mark law by allowing advertisers to bid for keywords corresponding to their competitors’ trade marks. It also confirmed that European law that protects internet hosting services applies to Google’s AdWords advertising system. This is important because it is a fundamental principle behind the free flow of information over the internet.

We should also note that Google has a system where Louis Vuitton can submit their trademark to forbid bidding from other companies. (But obviously, I don’t think they have.)

Plus, my argument that other companies should be able to bid on Louis Vuitton is mainly that Google’s audience is Google’s, Louis Vuitton didn’t do anything in this case to bring the actual web traffic.

Well, it looks like this is a big case that’s going to close a lot of doors for future, similar lawsuits. And I think it’s a good ruling, what do you think?

Google has just announced that they will be moving all of their Google search traffic from China to Google Search Hong Kong (Google.com.uk). Google Hong Kong is basically Google’s “uncensored” version in simplified Chinese.

I have to applaud Google’s efforts to maintain their culture of “free information”, even if that means being blocked from China for good. This certainly will impact the decisions of many lives of the world. I know Google is getting huge but decisions like this re-confirm that I am rooting for the right company.

Whoo Hoo! Go Google, what else can I say?

So earlier today we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk. Due to the increased load on our Hong Kong servers and the complicated nature of these changes, users may see some slowdown in service or find some products temporarily inaccessible as we switch everything over.

Google has just announced that it will be delivering some super-fast, free public internet for select cities in the U.S.

We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

Certainly, this has got many city mayors excited, even the mayor of Sarasota, Florida jumping in a pool full of sharks.

The mayor of Duluth, Minn., threw himself into the ice-ringed waters of Lake Superior. The mayor of Sarasota, Fla., immersed himself in a tank filled with bonnethead sharks, simply to one-up him. The mayor of Wilmington, N.C., said that he would even jump out of an airplane — with a parachute, of course.

1Gbps internet will be about 100 times faster than existing 99% of 100Mbps residential networks. I for one, would love to see this coming soon to San Francisco.

What’s does Google benefit from this?

Google will be able to crush outdated DSL/Cable providers in the U.S. today, hopefully bringing some competition to the ISP market so ISP companies start doing something about the slow internet in the U.S., not just sit on their lazy arses and keep making money.

Plus, having faster speeds to the internet means more internet users in general. This sorta “expands” Google’s current market, which could actually benefit anyone who’s using the internet to market their business.

FYI, the internet access speed/costs in the U.S. is still far behind the rest of the world. Why? All because ISP providers in the U.S. have a monopoly, they have no real “motivation” to quickly improve their networks because they are making so much money already with outdated networks.

I am crossing my fingers that this will help the ISP market and in the end that we all benefit and enjoy faster internet in the U.S.

This is only part of 3,000 IBM employees layed off this week.

IBM seems to be having its own trouble at this tough economy. For those of you who are going through the layoff, my kindest regards and you shouldn’t have trouble getting another job if you’ve worked at IBM right? At least that’s a positive outlook to come out of this.

It was reported that IBM plans to shift more business to China and India, IBM thinkpad t20 Battery will lay off 800 people in Australia.

Australian trade unions – the Australian Services Union, said they were notified that, in addition to Australia’s federal government services, staff, other services, post will be transferred to lower-cost China and India. Layoff notice will also be issued within the next few months.

Above is a “live “video of Kuji harbor, where the tsunami resulting from Chile could be hitting any minute.  Scientists in Japan predict that the tsunami will be a maximum of 3 meters or about 10 feet.  People are still asked to evacuate as they cannot be 100% sure.

As some of you well know, there’s been tsunamis hitting many parts of the world today including Hawaii as a result of recent Chile earthquakes.

I was watching the whole Hawaii tsunami earlier today for few hours. Luckily, Hawaii escaped the whole trial with no devastating results.

In the meanwhile, Japan is to be hit with tsunami waves any minute. Japan was also hit with a 7.3 magnitude earthquake just a day ago. That could have set off more tsunamis in other directions of the world.

Above is a live video I found of Kuji harbor in Japan, where the Tsunami is supposed to hit, expected at 10 feet.

As I am watching the live video, I can hear public speakers warning people to evacuate.

My prayers go out to those who have died in Chile and pray that tsunami doesn’t hit Japan too big.

Tsunami about to Hawaii, live coverage videos.

As some of you well know, earthquake has hit Chile earlier today, an 8.8 magnitude, one of the largest earthquakes in history of mankind. My regards for people in Chile, stay strong!

It seems that has set off tsunamis that are heading towards Hawaii as I am writing this blog post. I believe most residents have evacuated and hopefully, the tsunami won’t be devastating to Hawaii. Watch the video above to see the action live, it should hit any minute.

Above is a graph showing the dominance of Facebook over MySpace and Twitter “eclipsing” MySpace.

Is MySpace dying?  You betcha it is.

Why?

Myspace is like the pager when cellphones came out, they haven’t really done anything drastic to improve their site usability.

What could MySpace do to make a come back?

MySpace needs to re-invent itself through better user interface.  Their old, cluttery user interface might have work for a long time but we can clearly now see Facebook’s advantage lies over its clear, easier-to-use user interface.

Other than that, there’s a whole lot MySpace can do to make a comeback, there’s still enough activity to do it.

But if MySpace doesn’t do anything (like it hasn’t for past 10 years), they will have to file Chapter 4 eventually.  I personally wish MySpace 2.0 came about.

MySpace could leave all of their old content alone, just make a Web 2.0 version of it, mix it with a Digg/Stumble-like URL shortening bar, more social media aspects, and BAM!

Damn, I wish I was the CEO of MySpace, I would at least DO SOMETHING, not just sit around lazily until the company crumples into the ground, if it hasn’t already.  Damn, I say, what an opportunity lost.

I saw this coming, an iPhone-enabled credit card payment system. Square is actually a brainchild of Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter. This isn’t for full-fledged mobile sites but for individuals/small business who want to make accepting credit cards easier for iPhone users.

Square is an iPhone credit card payment system from Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and it has just entered public beta. Square lets anyone with an iPhone accept payments from a credit card using an iPhone app and a small card-reader dongle which plugs into the iPhone’s headphone jack. Square is different from other solutions because it is designed for individuals, not big-business. All you need to start is the widget and an account at Square.

Google has launched their own micro-blogging system on top of their already famous GMail.  The new Google Buzz is very similar to Twitter except you can add photos/videos/geo-tag without having to use additional apps.

Also, the new Google Buzz is an “open” system that allows your Buzz to be connected seamlessly to your Facebook/Twitter accounts.

I have to say, I like this new Google Buzz, it will certainly be fun having the big G jump into the micro-blogging game.

And since I just bought the Nexus One, this will be rather fun to try on the mobile version too.

Another great feature Google has added to their new Buzz social system is the ability to geo-tag places sorta like FourSquares for Twitter.

Anyways, Google and Amazon is partnering in UK to do some Android music sales.  This isn’t news for people like me who are using that already here in the US but neverthless, this will certainly impact Android sales and decline of Apple iPhones. (or less reasons to get an iPhone)

The move will put Amazon and Google in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone, which enables users to download music, movies, podcasts and TV shows on the move through the iTunes Music Store.

Amazon MP3 has been available on Android-based devices in the United States since the first “Google phone” went on sale in Oct 2008, but has not been accessible to British users of Google Android devices.

Not a hefty amount but still, sends a message to all ISPs to not be a “god” of the internet but rather “provide” like ISP stands for Internet Service Provider.

About two and a half years ago, reports surfaced on what appeared to be the throttling of BitTorrent connections by Comcast. The throttling, first discovered by Rob Toplowski, was confirmed by TorrentFreak, and was first reported in August 2007. Other news agencies picked it up later, especially after tests by the EFF and Associated Press confirmed events and included reports that other network based activity was also affected.

Comcast long-denied any wrongdoing, but a leaked memo revealed that the company went as far as instructing its front-line staff to lie about the issue. Then the FCC got involved and things deteriorated. At a hearing at Harvard, Comcast packed the venue with people they bussed in, but it didn’t stop the BitTorrent throttling practice being termed a ‘hacker technique’.

According to ComScore, online retailers have had a good holiday sales as their revenues are up, more than previous years.  I think this is the trend as more and more shoppers are turning online for better deals.

The major snowstorms hitting the eastern seaboard over the weekend appear to have given holiday e-commerce an additional boost, resulting in the heaviest online spending week on record at $4.8 billion,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “Consumers have clearly continued to spend online later into the season this year, with several very strong spending days in the most recent week including the heaviest online spending day in history – Tuesday, December 15 with $913 million. Retailers have been very aggressive with late season promotions while informing consumers that they could still get their purchases shipped in time for Christmas, and these tactics seem to be paying off.”

I don’t think the snowstorms have actually contributed much, this is simply a trend of traditional, retail shoppers going online.  If you look at the previous years, online sales revenue has steadily increased.  Perhaps they should have increased even further this year.  But still, the end result is rather satisfactory as online sales are up this year.

2009 Christmas Online Revenue Up!

Firefox, according to Statcounter Global stats, has become the world’s most popular browser.  Of course this data isn’t complete but it clearly shows Firefox’s dominance in the recent years.  My prediction is that Google Chrome isn’t too far away either.  In few years perhaps Firefox and Chrome will dominate the once IE-dominated market.

All is good, no more MS Monopoly, really tired of that.

Intel (INTC), after settling AMD for $1.25 billion, has more problems for cheating other chip makers for monopolizing with deceiving compiler improvements:

The FTC argued in a release that Intel’s tactics “have stifled innovation and harmed consumers.” The agency also claimed that the company “has waged a systematic campaign to shut out rivals’ competing microchips by cutting off their access to the marketplace.” Read “Intel’s legal woes appear to be far from over.”

“In the process, Intel deprived consumers of choice and innovation in the microchips that comprise the computers’ central processing unit, or CPU,” the FTC said. “These chips are critical components that often are referred to as the ‘brains’ of a computer.”

While the FTC complaint appeared to focus mainly on CPUs, it also mentioned graphics processing units, or GPUs, in a sign that Nvidia’s allegations against Intel may be a major factor in the complaint.

The FTC said it “may seek an order prohibiting Intel from unreasonably excluding or inhibiting the sale of competitive CPUs or GPUs, and prohibiting Intel from making or distributing products that impair the performance — or apparent performance — of non-Intel CPUs or GPUs.”

The agency also alleged that “Intel secretly redesigned key software, known as a compiler, in a way that deliberately stunted the performance of competitors’ CPU chips.”

“Intel told its customers and the public that software performed better on Intel CPUs than on competitors’ CPUs, but the company deceived them by failing to disclose that these differences were due largely or entirely to Intel’s compiler design,” the FTC said.

I don’t know how FTC caught that but for us consumers, this is a good thing as we will have more fair competition in the future, meaning better chips at lower prices.

Monopoly practices by big companies like Intel must be stopped although they have always been on the forefront of chip technology.

What I’d like to see personally is that the chip companies work together with an open standard and compete at a fair level.

I’ve also seen a similar situations where Windows operating system only supported Intel for memory limits whereas AMD chips didn’t. (On older XP systems)

Perhaps, it’s a very good thing FTC finally caught on, no more monopoly please!

Wow, this is going to be HUGE, Google has just announced that real-time Google search will be going LIVE officially in couple days with Twitter updates and others like Facebook updates:

Our real-time search features are based on more than a dozen new search technologies that enable us to monitor more than a billion documents and process hundreds of millions of real-time changes each day. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our new partners that we’re announcing today: Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca — along with Twitter, which we announced a few weeks ago.

The new features will be rolling out in the next few days and will be available globally in English. You can try them out today by visiting Google Trends and clicking on a “hot topic,” which in most cases will bring you to a search results page with the new real-time feature.

I think this is definitely going to put some more importance on Twitter in terms of search and how many more people will be able to “search” Twitter using Google search.

My only worries is that Twitter spammers don’t flood the real-time search results and that we will have to see how Google will be handling it.

Twitter, which is valued at around $1 billion, has yet to settle on a business model for the service, and paid-for business accounts will provide a welcome revenue stream for the microblogging platform.

This certainly is great news for Twitter and alike, and also, Twitter seems very likely to be included in future searches on major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Last month, Twitter signed deals with Google and Microsoft Bing to integrate its real-time search results in to both search engines.

Unemployment Rates Just Went Up in the US!

I have been using Google’s Chrome browser since its launch and I have to say, it’s much faster than even Firefox. (and of course, let’s not mention how slow IE is, regardless of version)

Google will be launching Google Chrome operating system which aimed specifically at cutting down unnecessary services on your computer and allowing faster application speeds.

I can see many netbooks that could benefit from this but I am not sure how Chrome OS will support things like 3D rendering and stuff that need a lot of processing power.  Plus, what I’d really like to know is if you can run Windows programs on Chrome OS natively, that will be something we will have to wait for.

Of course, if software manufacturers started making Chrome OS versions of their sofware, it will definitely change the ball game forever and perhaps one day Microsoft will be obsolete.

Well, it’s fun to keep guessing what will happen next.

You can actually download Chrome OS source code here and try to install it yourself.

HTML5, we want the web to apps as well as they do natively. We’ve been working hard on this. We want web apps to be able to use system resources the same way. Graphics is one example, we need a way to access to the GPU. Audio/video playback is key. And we need apps to work offline. We’re working with the other major browser vendors to make sure HTML5 comes along.

The growth in netbooks is amazing. Growth is exploding despite the recession. Ultra thin, ultra light computers. The trend is clear that we’re moving to web applications – not desktop applications. It’s the most successful platform out there right now. We’re moving from laptops down to netbooks on the regular computer end. On the other side we’re going from phones to tablets – these are all computers. Laptops are becoming more like phones too – always on connectivity.
