In launching a new direction for my design firm, Analog Design Studio, we collaborated with Mike Moore to create a video that would help express his firm’s message while crafting our visual language in the medium of film. We have put a lot of creative passion into creating this biopsy of Tres Birds Workshop. The documentary uncovers the passion and desire of their firm to create beautiful spaces and experiences through the reuse of objects to create healthy desirable spaces that take on a new life while expressing the past. The workshop explains their use of light, materials, and function making their work both contemporary and timeless. We hope you love this piece as much as we do, enjoy!

At first glance, the textiles blow you away. The textures, colors, and silhouettes of the pieces are a design dream, one that could only subtly dance around in my head but to truly conceptualize such an equally harmonious and chaotic view is that of sheer genius.

As I gather my jaw from the floor I remind my self that design is only a fraction of what makes up a company and when I think of SUNO, it’s their production practices in Kenya (and an obvious source of pattern inspiration) that I envy as much as I do the designs.

The majority of the collection is produced in Kenya with tailors who, although already quite skilled, also receive regular training by expert tailors brought in by SUNO. SUNO’s dedication to developing a sustainable and socially responsible business is not limited to our work in Kenya. Currently we do at least 70% of our production in Kenya, all our beaded and embroidered work happens in India, and we also produce a handful of pieces in NYC with our sample factory in the garment district.

As I return from my trip to Bogotá Columbia this week, Keeping these practices in mind is as important as it is to be sustainable and produce locally, as it’s of equal importance to practice supporting and influencing industries outside of our realm…after all, the design world is forever referencing the artesian crafts available around the globe, why not support them, rather than rip them off??

As far as I am concerned this world could use a little less sleazy and a little more classically sexy. I’m talking 40’s pin up with a little lace accent and silhouettes that would make Betty Grable swoon. I’m talkin’ Emilie Bon! This gal is a wiz when it comes to resort-wear, maybe it had to do with her upbringing in the French Riviera or maybe, (just maybe) she’s a women after my own heart, one who understands my desire to look and feel sexy as well as smart, modern and totally chic. Guttural and brutally honest, “Varfix” transforms the signifier of movement to a pure reference without a referent and turns it into a stripped down form of cultural and historical citation without the main text. The actual narrative remains perhaps somewhere outside of our screen and only makes an appearance when we try to decipher the video. Vulgarity here is a point of emphasize without the symbolic heaviness that usually lies behind the symbol.

The short by Kotaro Tanaka lies somewhere between Japanese anime and Oskar Fischinger’s animations; here though, instead of classical music the visual elements are choreographed to noise music and instead of simple geometric forms Tanaka uses the symbolic technique of “motion lines” common to comic strips as the visual signifier without the signified. The noises are painfully masochistic and I suspect many would not be able to watch the entire video. In many ways it is the filmic equivalent of Takashi Murakami’s “My Lonesome Cowboy” where the audio stands in for the boy and the viewer is left looking at the mere markings of the ejaculation.

Tanaka achieves his goal by stretching the notion of a narrative and letting his viewers maneuver the plot alone without the usual preface or symbolic ordering of normative film plot. “Varfix” is an effective and strong statement that speaks to the deviant psyche in straightforward deviant terms.

(Zeitgeist Studios) – You have stated that you’re not a professional photographer, so what do you do for a living?

(Matthais Heiderich) – Yes, true, I am not a professional photographer. But I will try to make it my living this year. There will be more exhibitions, in and outside Germany, and more places to buy prints. I will also try to work on more commissioned projects. So far I have spent my time studying computational linguistics and phonetics. I have a university degree but realized that this is not what I want to do in the coming years.

(ZS) – Your subjects seem to be primarily landscapes. Asta, a portrait series, is a stark departure from this. What was the motivation for this subject change?

(MH) – Asta is a friend of mine and I took many photos of her in the last two years, so I decided to upload a small selection, too. If you look at my Flickr site, you can see that my photography is pretty diverse. I just like to take pictures of whatever I think is beautiful – landscapes, industry, cityscapes, nature, people.

(ZS) – What challenges did you face shifting to a live subject?

(MH) – Whenever I take pictures of people, I realize that I am not a good portrait-photographer. I am not good at giving directions and making people feel comfortable. Also I prefer to be alone when being creative, alone with music and whatever is going on inside my brain.

This lady can do no wrong when it comes to the simple yet eloquent day-to-night dresses and one piece numbers that she is so well known for these days. Not only do her designs ooze with creativity and effortless ruching, cutouts and pleats, the silk medium and hand dyes have me swooning over her spring/summer 2011 collection. Girlfriends got it and I want some of it!

Recently voted one of Brooklyn’s best new designers (refinery29) I have a pretty solid feeling this lil’ lady is going to be sticking around for a while. Now if only the sunshine would emerge, I would love to have my spring/summer wardrobe on lock down. This season my heart belongs to cornflower blue, Greek beaches and everything silk. Because if anything I will at least look like I just returned from the islands, sans tan and yummy shirtless local with an affinity for Brooklyn babes. The dream continues, thanks Mina!

“Recognizing the beautiful, but extremely harsh environment, this year round residence applies a host of passive and active building technologies with real time monitoring devices to ensure an inviting and inspiring home. With a 17 kilowatt PV system and an evacuated tube solar thermal array, the 5,232 square foot home is grid-tied and all electric, powering two all electric, plug-in vehicles, while using no fossil fuels. In addition to the main living spaces, the home includes a guesthouse wing and home gym, which can be shut down when not in use.“

As a result of the home is extremely energy efficient with a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) score of -22. No matter how many times I have said my work comes first (a true workaholic will never claim otherwise) I can’t help but picture myself walking down the aisle in my perfect dress, locking eyes with my honey, and making a reality of every girls fantasy.
