With the good intent to bring this blog to new life, I migrated after 7 years Wordpress blogging to a new blogging platform:

Jekyll, the blogging engine that makes you blog like a hacker.

Jekyll is a blog-aware, static site generator. That means, that I don’t need any database engine and no more PHP for dynamic pages. I can simply generate this site on my local machine and then host it on Amazons S3 storage. A static solution may first seem old fashioned, but if you think about it you will see that Javascript heavy pages that shift the processing from server to the client browser are the future.

Let’s see how this works out.

There is a new release 1.3.0 of my Wordpress plugin Tweetly Updater. It includes the following changes:

Switch to Twitters new OAuth authentication protocol. I'm sorry, I was a bit late on this.
Tweeting of page updates is now optional.
You can add static hashtags to your tweets.

Vodafone TopUp And Go and Ubuntu network manager

If you are on vacation in the UK the Vodafone TopUp And Go offer is a great way to stay online without the tie-in of a contract. The Huawei USB dongle works great with Ubuntu (10.04). The only problem is that the network manager wizard configures the wrong APN for TopUp And Go. The correct APN is ppbundle.internet. After the wizard finished, go and change the properties in the connection like this (I use user web with password web, but this is maybe not necessary):

There is already a bug in launchpad that describes the problem.

I just released version 1.2.1 of Tweetly Updater. This release changes the way Tweetly distinguishes between new and edited posts, it now uses Post Status Transitions. A big ThankYou to user steevithak for the hint. This fix should also resolve problems with scheduled posts that were accidently posted to Twitter immediately.

Berlin - Essen & Trinken - Restaurants - Chinesisch Nach dem Tian Fu in Wilmersdorf mein zweitliebster Chinese in Berlin. Das Ambiente darf man mit Blick auf die schicken neuen Asiaten getrost als Retro bezeichnen, die Bestuhlung ist vom Sitzkomfort echt grenzwertig. Die Lage ist ganz Ok und zum Glück muss man das Gebäude in dem das Restaurant angesiedelt ist nicht angucken wenn man drin sitzt. Die Küche ist herausragend, fernab vom Einerlei mit Huhn, Rind oder Schwein gibt es hier eine unüberschaubare Auswahl an verschiedensten Gerichten und vor allem auch viele ausgefallene Sachen mit Gemüse und Fisch in bester Qualität und wunderbarer Präsentation. Die Bedienung ist geprägt von einer Mischung aus asiatischer Feundlichkeit und Berliner Schnauze, man glaubt es kaum, aber das geht gut zusammen. So ist mir dort zum ersten mal in meinem Leben von einer Bedienung direkt von der Bestellung eines Gerichtes abgeraten worden (Schweinefleisch nach Hausfrauenart osä.) und zwar mit dem Kommentar: "Das kommt aus dem Dorf der Chefin, das mögen die meisten Chinesen auch nicht". Berlin - Essen & Trinken - Restaurants - Chinesisch Eins der besten China Restaurants in Berlin. Wenn man die Qualität eines China-Restaurants an der Zahl der chinesischen Besucher misst, ist man hier goldrichtig. Witzigerweise fallen dort auch oft chinesische Reisegruppen ein, die während ihres Berlin-Besuchs kulinarisch auf Nummer sicher gehen wollen. Die Speisekarte ist üppig und hebt sich aufgrund des Szechuan Einschlags auch vom üblichen Einerlei "beim Chinesen" ab. Meine absoluten Favoriten sind zwei Vorspeisen, die "grünen Bohnen mit Ingwer und Knoblauch" und der unvergessliche "warme Szechuan Nudelsalat". Danach darf es gerne mit Gong-Bao Huhn oder einem leckeren Schweinefleischgericht nach Yuxiang-Art weitergehen. Die Bedienung ist angenehm unkompliziert, freundlich und schnell, es sei denn die oben erwähnten Reisegruppen tauchen auf, dann kann es schon mal etwas länger dauern, dafür wird man aber mit einen einmaligen Spektakel entschädigt. I released a Wordpress plugin that updates Twitter when you create or edit a blog entry, it uses the bit.ly service for short urls.

The first release 1.0.0 has the basic features of updating twitter and url shortening, in future releases I will add support for the additional info that bit.ly stores (Example) for submitted URLs.

I started a firefox extension project. The bit.lyff addon enables you to shorten URLs from the context menu using the URL-shorten service bit.ly. Additionally you can display bit.ly specific information about a web page, like mirror or thumbnail URLs. Installing backup-manager with the s3 upload method on Debian/Ubuntu

backup-manager is a simple and straightforward backup solution and Amazon S3 gives you reliable remote storage.

Since the backup-manager versions in Debian and Ubuntu are little bit outdated, I would recommend installing the 0.7.5 Release from the Website. While the installation of backup-manager is painless, getting the s3 part running a little bit tricky (and undocumented).
The s3 part of backup-manager is based on the Net::Amazon::S3 perl module and this needs the XML::LibXML::XPathContext module, which is, as far as I can see, not included in one of the libxml-*-perl packages in Debian or Ubuntu.

So, this procedure gives you all the needed dependencies:

sudo apt-get install libperl6-slurp-perl libxml2-dev
sudo cpan XML::LibXML
sudo cpan Net::Amazon::S3

Update: (14.06.07) Ubuntu feisty now contains the 7.5.3 version of backup-manager.

To get wpa and the ipw2100 working with the latest Network Manager in Ubuntu Dapper, which finally supports wpa, you will have to update manually the drivers for ieee80211 to version 1.1.12 and ipw2100 to version 1.2.1. I followed this HowTo (just the part with these two drivers, everything else is already included with Dapper)

Here's how to get the Canon LIDE 60 scanner working with Ubuntu Dapper: The device is a Genesys Logic GL646 and GL841 based scanner, so it uses the sane genesys driver. Make sure that the driver is enabled in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf. Now plug in the scanner and run sane-find-scanner and you will get something like this (if not, maybe you should try running this with sudo): found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x221c, chip=GL841?) at libusb:004:010 Using these values add an entry for the scanner to /etc/sane.d/genesys.conf: # Canon LiDE 60 usb 0x04a9 0x221c To use the device as a non-rootl user, you have to prepare udev by editing the libsane udev rules at /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules (the actual name of the file may differ, remember Dapper is still in development) and add a line using the values from sane-find-scanner: # Canon Inc.|LIDE 60 SYSFS{idVendor}=="04a9", SYSFS{idProduct}=="221c", MODE="664", GROUP="scanner" now restart udev with sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart Fire up xsane and it should work. Please leave a comment if you know why gnome-volume-manager doesn't start xsane when I plug in the scanner.
