Radiolab’s “Limits” episode literally explores what happens when the body, mind… and science are pushed to capacity. I’ve subscribed to several free podcasts since I started taking the bus in June and this is definitely one of the best 60 minutes of talk I’ve heard in a long time. Louisville Attractiveness

My friend Kurt and I revisited the people watching survey from last year. Last month, he was visiting from Nashville and we were sitting outside the Heine Bros on Bardstown & Douglass. In addition to taking the Dancin’ Kid Vid, we took about 45 minutes to judge the people around us and agree if they were attractive or not.

Mottos with God

I recently discovered that, in addition to the national motto “In God We Trust”, there are 5 states and 1 territory that have God in theirs. Colorado and Connecticut imply God in their mottos.

I did the hundred

It took me almost two months, but I finally completed the hundred pushups training program today. If you go to my pushups logger page, you can see at the bottom that I failed my first 3 tries. In fact, I actually gave up the first time I had tried the program in early 2009.

A Louisvillian’s 3 days at Lollapalooza 2010

I got back from my first music festival yesterday. The Lady (not Gaga) and I left Thursday afternoon from Louisville for Chicago and spent the next three days and nights enjoying our first Lollapalooza experience. There were apparently more than 130 bands on 8 stages spread all across Grant Park. What follows in this post is my usual event review with photos, videos, and itinerary. For a more professional roundup, I recommend the official Lollapalooza website. It’s one of the best event sites I’ve ever used – their blog has a great review of each day with (mostly) better photos and videos than the ones we were able to capture. (August 15th photo and video update @ end of post.)

Hello, Zepfanman.com readers!! Are you ready to rock?! ‘Cause I am. This is my first ever stint as a Guest Blogger, so big ups to J.J. for knowing quality when he sees it. If you like what you read here, check out my blog A Fistful of Science. Now let’s get down to it.

I’ve become increasingly interested over the past year in playing a more active role in my community. The big watershed for me was the death of Pops Minkel (my dad) in 2009. I realized how much of my grumpy attitude had come from him, and faced with the prospect of turning to “shit and dust,” as Michael Vine likes to say, I decided I wanted to spend my remaining days on Earth making as much of a difference as I could. I’ve since come to realize that being the change I want to see is going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Dancin’ Kid Vid

My friend Kurt was up for a few days last week and we were spending some time on Bardstown road – Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen, Za’s (1st time there, noticed they have Xingu), Bunz, Baxter Avenue Theater, and just about every used music & movie store. We also stopped by Desserts by Helen, but they had closed 20 minutes before we got there. Kurt was determined to have dessert, so he got some Graeter’s ice cream next door. It wasn’t unbearably hot outside, so we sat down at the Heine Bros patio. We were conducting the Attractiveness Experiment redux (results coming soon) when a kid, probably 17 years old, walked out of the coffee shop with his laptop and headphones, apparently ready to rock. I took a video.

Best of World Cup 2010

¡Viva España! I’ve never before felt so happy for Spain as when they won the World Cup yesterday with less than 2 minutes to spare in overtime play. (Of course, I was even happier 18 days earlier when Donovan scored with just seconds to spare in the US/Algeria match to put them into the Round of 16.) I’m getting ahead of myself, though; I’d hate to forget to mention some of the great players and moments, so I’ll leave it to HuffPost to distill it down to 30.

Louisville Waterfront July 4th

What happened to the long weekend? On Saturday morning, I felt like the weekend was going slowly but now all of the sudden, it’s Monday night. I guess that’s how it always goes. I’d love to give the full weekend review, but we’ve got company – of course, it’s my fault for waiting until the last minute once again. But anyway, it was a great weekend all around here in Lou.
