Landscape Workshop (LW) is a Birmingham based landscaping company that is well known for quality work, great designs, and innovative practices.

They have over 200 employees in the field daily serving clients. Knowing in real time what projects and jobs are being done, where, and by whom and being able to relay that information to Account Managers who interact with clients is big deal. It’s also important to capture employee time correctly for compliance reasons and to assure field workers that their hours are accounted for and fully compensated.

LW has recently contracted with Zertis to design a platform that meets these challenges. The project comprises mobile/web/data delivery platforms that get the right information to the right people at the right time.

The problem with the Internet startup craze isn’t that too many people are starting companies; it’s that too many people aren’t sticking with it. That’s somewhat understandable, because there are many moments that are filled with despair and agony, when you have to fire people and cancel things and deal with very difficult situations. That’s when you find out who you are and what your values are.
So when these people sell out, even though they get fabulously rich, they’re gypping themselves out of one of the potentially most rewarding experiences of their unfolding lives. Without it, they may never know their values or how to keep their newfound wealth in perspective.

This morning, I was at a roundtable with some other business people I truly respect and enjoy discussing the challenges of business and life in general with and we were discussing goal setting. I mentioned to them that at Zertis, we focus less on the granular details of setting concrete goals in terms of numbers.

I’m worried it makes us dollar focused, instead of culture focused.

We care more about:

Making sure we hire the right people and acquire the right clients than just meeting some quarterly figures.

Hiring smart, dedicated people who are passionate about what they do.

Always doing the right thing, first by the team and by our customers.

Creating an atmosphere that is fun, but intellectually engaging.

Finding sustainable ways to grow our revenues with good profit margins.

Taking reasonable risks.

Of course in my personal life, I have goals and I have people I share those goals with to hold me accountable, so I don’t consider goals bad. I just wonder about the balance between the grand vision and overly focusing on the little goals that help achieve it. I fear focusing on those goals sometimes makes it hard to pivot when necessary.
