Totally ahead of time (2 months before), on November 7th at 8:38am I became a father!
Anyone with some google knowledge can find the pictures if interested.
Despite what it can seem, he is fine and recovering...
He will be in the incubator for some time.

Someone asked me to say "hi" at least... so be it :)
About ZiPhone, the actual version I'm testing works pretty well, but it's not ready at all for public release.
I hope it will someday.
In the meanwhile some real life personal matters are fullfilling my life and some router hacking (pirelli broadband/dialface wifi adsl2 routers) are keeping my mind focused :)

As I already said I see no reasons now to rush to mod the iPhone. Apple did a wonderful job with appstore and suplies so the iPhone is available now in almost any country and in every form (locked, unlocked, PAYG).

Modding the iPhone at moment seems just a hypocritical synonym for "getting apps for free from appstore" and I'm not fine with that.

Let's see what will happen.

Since I received many requests for updates,
here you have a few:

At the moment I'm testing and tweaking what could be
the next ZiPhone version.

As it happened the first time, I'm not rushing and
as it already happened in february I'm not even sure I
will release it.

As of now, my own iPhone is on 1.1.4 (and happy to be).
My test iPhone is on 2.0.1.
My iPod is on 2.1 (unmodified).

I'm also working on a few other things:

I just found something that can crash any iphone/ipod
and exploitability is being investigated.
This vulnerability anyhow affects all models and firmwares.
I can't tell you more about this.

Since this bug is VERY serious I have yet to decide what to do with it.
If Apple is interested I think they know my email address.
If they are not... well they will know sooner or later.

Anyhow, the ZiPhone "proof of concept" I'm using had no problems with
the new iTunes 8 release. And the bug I found works on 2.1 too.

Since dev team is never tired of saying bullshit,
let me tell you this:
They say:
"QuickPwn contains all-original code and features a very tiny bootstrapper that allows it to use libraries and code that's already on the iPhone."

Sure..
Now just know this:
without "bl39.bin" and "bl46.bin" their BOOTNEUTER would NEVER work.
Those "bin" files are 100% copyrighted code of INFINEON and APPLE.
They are the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders of the baseband in their original form.

I hate liars.
And you can check for yourself what I just wrote it's the truth.
Without those files no unlock would be possible with bootneuter.

How could you still believe their words ?

I'm testing at the moment a very preliminary version of the next ZiPhone..
Let me tell you it's impressive.
A very few testers screamed when they saw how simple is this.
I can't tell you more for now..
It's really to early.

Let me tell you something about the columbus egg and quickpwn.

Quickpwn works exactly on the same principle of ZiPhone:
it creates a ramdisk and executes it.
In the crafted ramdisk a patcher modifies the OS for activation.
It's conceptually a good work (ZiPhone was indeed a good work).
I am glad dev team abandoned their pwn to switch to a ZiPhone like program.
Now who is the idea stealer here ?

Anyhow, enough with drama.
My new "egg" idea has nothing to do with all this.
And I don't even know if I will ever release it.
For now (as it happened with ZiPhone) I am using it and testing it.

ZiPhone was developed 9 months after the iPhone release.
ZiPhone is multi-platform and does a real hack in 4 minutes.
ZiPhone's servers NEVER went down and assured full bandwidth even at peak times.
ZiPhone site had 10 million visits in 5 months.
ZiPhone used opensource tools packaged in a custom ramdisk wish worked because of an exploit I found.
ZiPhone is itself opensource and free to use and modify.
ZiPhone never harmed a single phone. All issues reported happened because of hardware failures.
Other tools used my ramdisk exploit and many of them didn't even mention this.
A famous app used to disable wifi, caused the grey wifi problem to appear if wifi was disabled before using ZiPhone.
I haven't used any other tool and my own iPhone is still on 1.1.4 and happy to be.
My iPod is on 2.0 and wishes 1.1.4 back :)
The famous "BSD root" error was caused by people clicking on the wrong button and can be solved with a simple procedure.
The actual "tools" are based on WAREZ (illegal software) without them it doesn't work.
ZiPhone actually helped Apple to beta test the iPhone in other markets and tailor the next product many of you are enjoying now.
The actual tools could probably kill it.
Apple just need to push a button and I sincerely hope they will so to save the product and make it better and better.
I am not leaving the scene and I am still studying the situation.
I don't have any secret version of ZiPhone but I can still run the ramdisk exploit (other people say it doesn't work only because they know just a part of it).
Even if I don't usually agree with him, I respect George Hotz for what he did and for his skills.

And if you want an iPhone, go and BUY it.
If you want APPS, buy them on the AppStore.
Apple did an impressive job and they deserve it.

In the next days some people will release
what they will call the ultimate unlocking tool
for all iphones/ipods.

While that is a nice proof of concept and a very
good team work, I wish to tell you what's
going to happen.

Since a real jailbreak is not (yet) possible,
they opted for a software upgrade, total
internat firmware modification and
custom firmware.

For me, a real hack works this way:
you upgrade to 2.0, run a program
and in 4-6 minutes the phone works.
That's because 4 to 6 minutes are needed
to boot the phone a couple of times
and modify a few bytes here and there.

If you remember, the first iPhone came out
in June 2007, ZiPhone came out in february 2008.
Why so ? There were already ways to
unlock and activate the iPhone, and I used them
but were way too buggy and difficult for the
unexperienced user.

So I used the publicly available tools as a basis
to craft a tool to do things safely, quickly and
properly. It was just a command line tool which
did what I needed.

As new firmwares came out I had to totally
rewrite all the tools used for it to work.
When someone (iRev) saw it he pushed me
to release it and since I partially used
opensource tools I decided to make it
opensource too.

I have been accused of "stealing".
In an opensource world that word is
pure nonsense.
Did every linux ditribution steal ?
There are many programs around
which used ZiPhone as a basis.
Did I complain?

IMHO, opensource is great because
everyone can take the code, improve it,
and re-release it in opensource form.
That 'cycle' allows things to constantly
improve based on people tastes and needs.

About the 'soon to be released' hacks,
think about the playstation or online games;
you can crack them, but you won't be able
to play online with legit buyers.

Now think: what is an offline iPhone?
A paperweight.
That's what you're gonna have
if (WHEN) apple decides to push a button.
And this time they will.

Apple did an impressive work.
Not only technically but marketing wise.
They have all my admiration and
I am glad I contributed to all this.

About me I will continue being a 'user' first
and as usual I will try to improve things I use
and to share with others so they can further
improve things.

If I can, obviously, and if and when I feel to.
