What do you think of the color scheme on the Witch Hunter? Admittedly, it came out a lot darker and more vibrant than I intended. Originally, I was going for a more realistic appearance, but my skill level just isn’t there yet. Because of this, I have considered shelving this guy for the time being, lest I get deterred and stop painting all together. I suppose it doesn’t help that I bought Dragon Age the other day. *grin* Your comments are welcome.

Continuing the trend of posting vintage miniatures, here are two Warhammer Undead mummies by Games Workshop that I painted in 1997. I distinctly recall chatting up the proprietor of Patch and Crow’s Nest in Manhattan, Kansas about the proper way to paint mummies.

Being terribly busy has left me very little time to paint. In lieu of recent work-in-progress photos, I have decided to post photos of vintage miniatures that I painted while in college. These are among the first miniatures I have ever painted, thus they appear fairly crude. Bear in mind, this was before I learned how to correctly thin paint. I think I was using it straight from the pot!

This is a vintage Warhammer Vampire Counts (Undead) Vampire Lord by Games Workshop. I am not sure when this miniature was originally released. I probably painted it 1997. Note the “Goblin Green” paint job on the base. This was the standard for war-gaming miniatures at the time.

Note that the hair and base appear slightly shiny. This is due to the floor polish that I use in the wash mixture. Floor polish helps the wash settle into the recesses without forming unsightly bubbles or patches. Later, I’ll add some matte varnish to diminish this effect.

I made a quick mock-up in the Gimp (based on the previous work-in-progress photo) to test out my color options for the cloak, sash, and band on the hat. You’ll have to forgive me, my Gimp skills are lacking as I am more of a Photoshop person.

I narrowed down my color selection to purple and red. Let me know which color you like better. Note that virtually everyone that paints this miniature chooses red. I thought purple would be a nice contrast, but I cannot dismiss the notion that red does work very well on this mini.

As this is just a quick mock-up, you’ll have to use your imagination when it comes to the contrast and saturation of the colors. Here they tend to look flat, but the finished miniature will have greater depth and variation.

Thank you for your input.

Considering it has been well over a year since I posted any new content, it seemed like the right time to give the site a reboot. I can’t promise I will be any better about posting content, but I will do my best. Please let me know if you have any questions.
