It’s that time of the week again! Time when chart-whores like me literally get all festive, while the mother of all charts are revealed for the week. Minutes ago, the Billboard Hot 100 and 200 Albums Chart were updated, and like a good little geek, I have all the action right here, just fer joo! Adorable, I know. So without further delay, let’s get some (chart) action y’all!

This week, smooth-crooner John Mayer bows atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart with his 4th studio album, ‘Born And Raised‘, selling 219,000 copies in the US. This is his 3rd chart topper, following 2003′s ‘Heavier Things‘ (317,000 first week sales) and 2009′s ‘Battle Studies‘ (289,000 first week sales). Considering that Mayer has a granuloma in his throat that has prevented him from promoting his album significantly, and comparing his first week sales to last week’s topper, ‘Trespassing‘ by Adam Lambert, which debuted at # 1 with 77,000 sold, I’d say 219,000 units is pretty incredible!

A very predictable # 2 album this week again. In its 66th chart week, Adele’s ‘21‘ sells another 56,000 units in the US to remain glued to the runner-up spot. While another former chart-topper Carrie Underwood’s ‘Blown Away‘ holds the # 3 spot with 45,000 units sold this week.

Major new entries within the top 10 are by Slash, who’s sophomore solo stint ‘Apocalyptic Love‘ debuts at # 4 with 38,000 units sold. MercyMy bows in at # 7 with ‘The Hurt And The Healer‘ which moved 33,000 units. Sara Bareilles earns her 3rd top 10 on the Billboard 200 as her new 5 song EP ‘Once Upon Another Time‘ enters the chart at # 8.

Meanwhile over at the Hot 100 Singles Chart, Gotye spends a 7th week on top with ‘Somebody That I Used To Know‘ featuring Kimbra, while Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe‘, the next potential # 1 single, spends another week at # 2.

One of my fave songs from Florence + The Machine’s incredible sophomore album ‘Ceremonials‘ just got the video treatment! ‘Spectrum‘ is the 5th single from the album, and Florence actually looks all kindsa amazing in this video! Glamberts! Rejoice!

In case you’re not a chart-geek like me, Adam Lambert’s sophomore album ‘Trespassing‘ just debuted atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart earlier this week FYI. Path breaking? Yes indeed! Lambert becomes the first openly gay artist to début at # 1, re-writing history. While Elton John and George Michael have all had # 1 albums before, none of them were open about their sexuality. Coincidence that none of their albums made it to the top after they came out publicly? We may never know. Way to go Adam!

Check out Adam’s second video from the album, The Bruno Mars-penned Dr Luke-produced ‘Never Close Our Eyes‘ that was just released a while ago. I’m thoroughly impressed with the entire album, and this particular number – boasting of some glitzy synths, killer beats and a soaring chorus – is one of my fave cuts from the album. Depicting a futuristic prison where Adam and his co-prisoners are held hostage and fed on meals in the form of pills while being subjected to what appears to be memory/identity eradication – while literally not blinking throughout the first half of the video, the video might just have more of an agenda to prove. When Adam rebels, breaks the rules and makes his escape while unleashing some fierce choreography with his posse amidst a neon-fest, it’s hard to miss out on the triumphant moment in music for the LGBT community as a whole, who have long been suppressed and not given enough credit irrespective of their monumental contributions to music. At this point, I’m literally unaffected by Adele’s multi-bazillion selling sophomore extravaganza ‘21‘ breaking more records than I can keep track of. I mean how many has she broken already? As many as the number of units ‘21‘ has sold maybe? But then again, y’all know I’m a chart-whore. I’ll probably drop a baby and rush off to blog the moment I see a new chart record being created (calm down with those judge-ey looks, we all have priorities). So here we are! Another milestone surpassed by the Adelegend herself!

As of this week, Adele’s ‘21‘ has spent an unprecedented 65 weeks within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart (23 of which have been at # 1), coming in at # 2, (blocked from the penthouse by Adam Lambert’s ‘Trespassing‘)  selling over an incredible 9.1 million units in the US alone. The 65-week run of ‘21‘ surpasses the 64-week run of Paula Abdul’s iconic début album ‘Forever Your Girl‘ (which eventually spent 10 weeks at # 1 after taking 64 weeks to reach the pole position) within the top 10 of the Billboard 200, thus making ‘21‘ the second longest charting album by a female vocalist within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart.

The album ahead of ‘21‘? None other than the ground-breaking ‘Jagged Little Pill‘ by Rock goddess Alanis Morissette, with a massive 72-week-long run within the top 10! And the way ‘21‘ refuses to stop selling, Adele is pretty much on course to have the longest charting album by a female vocalist within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart!

In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘21‘ marched ahead of the longest charting album of all time, the legendary soundtrack to ‘The Sound Of Music‘ (the very first cassette I ever owned y’all!!!), which completed a whopping 109-week-run within the top 10!

3 global # 1 singles, 22 million units sold worldwide, 6 Grammy’s – and still at # 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Yup – the chances look good! Way to go (again) Adele!

Isn’t it a bit too much? Last Tuesday I mourned the loss of Disco’s fave diva, the extraordinary Donna Summer. Within a week, another Throwback Tuesday post is being dedicated to a remarkable band that spear-headed the Disco era of the late 70′s, as one of their remaining two members breathed his last, losing his battle to the same dreaded disease Donna Summer succumbed to, barely a few days earlier. Is it not enough with Etta and Whitney gone already? Like I had mentioned earlier, it truly is an incredibly sad year for music, and we’re not even half way through it.

Last week, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, undoubtedly one of the most prolific, influential and successful bands of all time, lost a prolonged battle with liver and colon cancer at the age of 62. Today’s Throwback Tuesday post is dedicated to Robin, as well as the Bee Gees, who’s contribution to music will forever remain unmatched.

Disco became a global phenomenon because of the Bee Gees. Period. With over 200 million records sold worldwide, 9 Billboard # 1 singles, a collective 9 Grammy awards including the Legend Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Hall Of Fame Award, an incomparable back-catalog of over 45 years, inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame – there will never be another band like them. The loss will forever be irreplaceable, while their monumental legacy will live on through their music.

Today I pick one of my fave Bee Gees songs of all time, the incredibly lush ‘How Deep Is Your Love‘, as my Throwback Tuesday song of the week. Taken from the soundtrack of the 1977 movie ‘Saturday Night Fever‘ starring John Travolta, the song became the first of 6 consecutive number one singles (out of 9 overall) for the band on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won the Grammy for the Best Pop Vocal Performance in 1978. I personally loved Barry’s falsetto that was the trademark for a Bee Gees number, but the effortless blend of Robin’s vibrato and Maurice’s harmonies were equally crucial in creating their signature sound.

Undoubtedly the epitome of the disco phenomenon, the soundtrack to ‘Saturday Night Fever‘ topped the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for an unprecedented 24 consecutive weeks, being certified 15 times Platinum by the RIAA. The album also topped the UK Top 40 for 18 consecutive weeks, and eventually won the Grammy for Album Of The Year.

Robin, Maurice and Barry Gibb redefined pop culture, and they were the definition of the Disco era. Robin’s death is an irreplaceable loss for music indeed – those shoes can never be filled. Thank you for the music Robin – and the Bee Gees, your music will keep ‘stayin’ alive‘ for generations to come.

It’s all fun on top of the UK Top 40 Charts this week peeps! In a surprising turn of events, Indie pop band Fun. and Janelle Monae’s former Billboard Hot 100 # 1 single ‘We Are Young‘ vaults ahead of British boy-band The Wanted’s new single ‘Chasing The Sun‘ in its 7th chart week to move up to # 1 on the UK Top 40 Singles Chart!

The Wanted were poised to début at # 1 earlier this week with ‘Chasing The Sun‘, but had to make do with a # 2 entry, stalling 3000 copies behind ‘We Are Young‘.

The second new entry within the top 10 of the UK Top 40 Singles Chart comes in the form of Paloma Faith’s brand new single ‘Picking Up The Pieces‘ produced by Nellee Hooper. The single previews the release of Paloma’s sophomore album ‘Fall To Grace‘ that releases tomorrow.

Flawlessness supreme Mizz Jennifer Lopez barely misses out on the top 10 by entering the chart at # 11 with her new single ‘Dance Again‘ featuring Pitbull.

Over at the UK Top 40 Albums Chart, Scottish chanteuse and former Neuroscience student Emeli Sande’s stellar début ‘Our Version Of Events‘ moves back up to # 1 in its 15th week on the chart. Definitely an album worthy of the top spot and one of my fave albums of the year so far, and is it a coincidence that Emeli’s first name happens to be Adele? Emeli’s domination forces guitarist Joe Bonamassa to début at # 2 with his new album ‘Driving Towards The Daylight‘.

John Mayer’s new album ‘Born And Raised‘, poised to début at # 1 on the other side of the Atlantic later this week, debuts at # 4, while Fun.’s ‘Some Nights‘ debuts at # 7.

Linkin Park’s new synth-heavy Electro-Rock jam ‘Burn It Down‘, the first single from their 5th studio album ‘Living Things‘ finally got the video treatment. The Joe Hahn directed music video is all about apocalyptic visuals, with the band members being engulfed by fire, without a story-line or a plot. ‘Living Things‘ is scheduled for a June 26th release. Kelly Clarkson’s 3rd single ‘Dark Side‘ from her Billboard # 2 peaking 5th studio album ‘Stronger‘ just got the video treatment, and this one’s a clear winner. Kelly isn’t playing this time around, as both her previous singles from the album peaked within the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, with the second single ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)‘ reaching # 1.

The new video deals with issues ranging from drug and alcohol abuse, weight issues, marital problems and unemployment, and ends on an inspirational and hopeful note. Way to go Kelly! It’s always great to see a video that delivers a message of acceptance irrespective of your flaws, and deals with the fact that nobody’s perfect. Over a decade in the bizness, and she’s churning out more quality stuff than most of her contemporaries as well as peers, and this era seems to be shaping up into another ‘Breakaway‘ era, when she dominated the global charts with a relentless release of hit singles from her 2004 sophomore album, eventually winning 2 Grammy’s and moving a whopping 13 million copies of the album worldwide, the highest selling album by an American Idol globally. Undoubtedly the best American Idol out there, along with Carrie Underwood.

‘Stronger‘ has already moved over 780,000 copies in the US since its release. I’d highly recommend you buy it, if you haven’t already. Watch the video for ‘Dark Side‘ right here :

Like I have been relentlessly harping on for the past gazillion posts here on zomgtalk, 2012 is THE year of comebacks! And guess what..veteran rockers Aerosmith have FINALLY decided to jump on the comeback train and release their first album in over 8 years, ‘Music From Another Dimension‘, on August 28th, 2012!

It’s been a painfully long wait for fans of the band, who’s last album was 2004′s RIAA Gold-certified ‘Honkin’ On Bobo‘ which peaked at # 5 on the Billboard 200, following which the band went through an insane amount of drama with Steven Tyler entering rehab in 2009.

The incomparable Kylie Minogue treated fans to an anniversary special, commemorating the completion of 25 years of the Impossible Princess’s reign in the music industry with a brand new single, and OMG A BRAND NEW VIDEO!!!! Brb…hyperventilating.

Watch Kylie unleash mayhem in London’s Soho neighborhood in the Christian Larson-directed clip for her new single ‘Timebomb‘, a sassy and gritty electro-pop jam featuring some seriously sexy and breathy vocals by Princess Minogue.
