Well, it’s a new weekend, so it’s time for a new Shirt.Woot entry! This week’s derby theme is “Sun”.

My shirt design is called “Van Gogh on Prozac”:

What if Vincent Van Gogh had been on antidepressants? Perhaps instead of painting “Starry Night”, he would have painted “Sunny Day” (complete with a smiling sun — Prozac is strong stuff).

Today I submitted a design to shirt.woot.com in honor of my grandfather’s favorite poem, which was “Sea Fever” by John Masefield:

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

So here we are, mid-way through ZdC's 100^th strip celebration week! Yaaaay!

As you now know, I decided to put the gang on The Muppet Show. Why? Why not! I've always loved The Muppet Show. Also, I always felt like I could to a decent job of drawing them. As it turns out, it's not quite as easy to capture their essence as I thought (especially Kermit), but it's been a lot of fun trying!

I wonder why big entertainment companies (read D I S N E Y), or the like, don't invest in developing webcomics for their various properties? It seems like a fairly cheap and easy way to have new content that draws in repeat visitors. Then they could advertise their new movies, merch, whatever.

I know they used to publish comics in Disney Adventures. But that's been cancelled. I think they could just move it to the web. Have five different comics that each update once a week, or something like that.

And I'm not just saying this because I'd love to do a Muppets (or Ducktales) strip. *ahem*

That having been said, this ZooDotCom story arc is still going strong. Keep checking back this week as hilarity ensues!

Post: Next Week We Celebrate ZdC's 100th Strip!

Next Monday is ZooDotCom’s 100^th strip! Wow, times been a flyin’. It’s amazing how quickly it goes when one actually updates on time, isn’t it?

To celebrate this illustrious occasion I’m kicking off a new, super-sized, story arc. All the strips will be double tall (Sunday strip sized), and new strips will be posted every day through the end of the storyline. (After that, I’ll return to bi-weekly updates.)

I’m really excited about bringing the ZdC gang to a place that I’ve loved since I was a wee little McToddler.

Be sure and check back Monday. I hope you’ll all enjoy it as much as I’m enjoying writing it!

I’m a fan of the NBA… Most of the time. But I swear, the officiating has been horrible this year. Not just for my team, but all over. It’s enough to make you wonder.

Recently, my brother picked up a DVD set of campy scifi TV shows. In the collection was one called Ark II. Technically, I was alive when it was on the air—but just barely. So needless to say, I don’t remember it. I have to say though, keeping in mind it’s an old Saturday morning show, I’ve really liked it.

It’s so bad that it’s good. If you know what I mean. The show is about three “highly trained young scientists,” and a chimp, who are roaming around a dystopian 25th century. A light-hearted premise, really. They travel in their bullet shaped ~~winnebago~~ mobile lab, the Ark II. Inside that they also have a small buggy vehicle, the Roamer, and a jet-pack. That’s right, a jet-pack, baby!

Anyway, I did a sketch of a couple of the characters, Jonah and Adam:

If you’ve seen the show, then you know I made Adam (the chimp) a little out of character. He’s smart, but not that smart. He actually sounds like Solomon Grundy using Stephen Hawking’s voice box thing.

For some reason, though, I find a chimp with a British accent hilarious. But maybe that’s just me. :-)

I like to do warmup sketches before I start drawing. Helps loosen up my artwork. This is our beloved APO, of course. Care for some little known ZooDotCom trivia?

Too bad, I'm gonna tell you anyway.

The strip was originally going to be called "APO's World." It was going to be strictly about APO and his being surrounded by -- what he thought were -- complete idiots.

Also, APO's name is actually an acronym. Can you guess what it stands for? Here's a hint. Years ago, I would draw A.P.O. on my marker-board. He would vent on all the outrageous things I saw going on in my workplace.

So I redesigned the site (again).

Yeah, yeah. I know. But the last design didn’t really feel very polished to me. Especially the sidebars. They looked like chunks of various content splattered over there, dribbling down the side of the site. Nice mental picture, eh?

Anyway, this design is a lot more cohesive (I think) since I designed everything to actually have a home. (Are you to good for your kkhhooome?)

I’ve tested it in Safari 4 and Firefox 3… If you have problems on your browser, please let me know. Thanks!
