Hertrich had to end his record streak in January, after he was diagnosed with a serious case of cardiac arrhythmia.

Hertrich ended his world record streak after completing 2,993 days of consecutive skiing.

"I was shooting for 3,000 days, which was only a week away. Or, what I really wanted to do was hit 100 million vertical in a hundred months, which would have been Feb. 29," Hertrich recounted during an interview.

After suffering from problematic symptoms for a while, Hertrich decided to go in for a check and that was when he was diagnosed with the irregular heartbeat. Hertrich’s doctor in Copper, Colordo gave him strict orders to hang up his Telemark skis for the sake of his health. Hertrich however did the opposite and when he got home, he put on his ski boots and went for one last run. Hertrich explained, "They said, ‘You need to take an ambulance to the hospital. I told the doctor, ‘I’m not a very good listener.’ Against his will, I went home, put my ski boots on and went up for one last run."

Hertrich began his quest to break the record in 200, after he saw a plaque which honored Jackson Hole skiers for collectively notching in 6 million vertical feet in a season. Hertrich reached 7 million vertical feet in the spring of 2004, but instead of concluding his quest to beat the world record he decided to press on. His dedication to the quest is as impressive as the victory itself. Copper Mountain spokesman, Chris Runyon, explained "Hertrich has kept skiing with separated shoulders, bruised ribs and many days of knock-you-off-your-feet sickness. It seemed like nothing was going to stop this Fu Manchu skiing machine. That’s why we were all extremely surprised to hear that was in the hospital. Everyone at Copper wishes him a speedy recovery, and we know he’ll be back on the slopes to finish his goal."

The Guinness World Records however categorizes his victory as the most accumulated vertical descent in consecutive days for telemark skiing as opposed skiing in general. Apparently Guiness World Records differentiates alpine and telemark, therefore seeing Hertrich claim only the victory for telemark skiing.” I’m bummed I missed 3,000 days by a week, but I’m proud I made it this far. Every year was a challenge. When I look at the whole picture, it doesn’t seem like anything. But when you break down the years, it’s amazing. I really don’t think anyone will ever attempt it," Hertrich explained.

Most people are accustomed to virtual games and they might have played some of these games online against other global gamers. The Ergo-Bike Premium 8i could have just revolutionized biking as we know it; the bike is designed to allow bikers from different parts of the world to compete against each other online.

Bikers Compete Against Each Other Virtually

The Ergo-Bike Premium 8i

Bikers ‘converge’ at a specified time, choose their preferred course and compete against each other. Manufactured by German Daum Electronics; the bike mirrors a real bike in every sense and integrates a battery of sensors and processors, to monitor the pulse the rider’s pulse rate, distance covered, the speed at which the biker is riding the bike and the measurement of the current power output in watts.

The riders can watch each other through video streams and also speak with each other over voIP-enabled headsets. Kip Potter, who co-owns InBikeSF (the bike’s global distributors), explained “the problem with other stationary bikes is that they are boring.” He explains that with the Ergo-Bikes “you can see him breathing. You can see his heart rate. That gets you motivated.”

InBikeSF recently began shipping the bikes to the US, and a couple of thousand bikes have already been sold in Europe and South Africa. About 20 of these bikes have been sold in the US so far.

The Virtual Bikes Hope To Spark A Fitness Boom

The bike is amongst some of the products released in the market which are geared towards increasing the fitness boom. The world as a whole is in the midst of an obesity epidemic and these bikes could be one of the solutions to this problem. Increased numbers of middle-aged people have taken-up endurance sports in recent time.

The bikes are priced at $3,500 and they are generally marketed to the people who can afford them. They are also marketed to people who have minimal time to spare, when it comes to exercising and implementing other fitness regimes.

Professional bikers use the Ergo Bike Premium 8i for individual training. The bikes come with onboard computers which allow the rider to track their statistics and improve on their outputs progressively.

A Bike That Lets You Monitor Your Competitors’ Vitals

The Ergo-Bike Premium 8i

The bikes allow riders to track their performance in relation to their competitors, with the same age and weight. Individual riders can then download this data to their computers for reference. The bikes are also fitted with MP3 players to keep the riders entertained during their work-outs. Different kinds of training programs are offered to the riders; in line with their fitness or skill goals.

What Makes The Ergo-Bike Premium 8i Cool?

The bikes are versatile and can be used by just about anyone for exercise purposes.

The bikes bring in a fun aspect to exercising, by allowing bikers from different parts of the world to compete against each other online.

Bikers can keep track of their statistics and monitor the vitals of other competitors via an onboard computer.

Competitors can choose routes to compete in using the maps availed via the virtual world.

They are convenient to have around, especially for individuals who have busy lifestyles and can’t get enough time to go to the gym.

Hundreds of years ago, Vancouver Island was plagued by slavery; when enemies attacked the land from the sea. The Comox people took their womwn and children for safekeeping to the ‘Forbidden Plateau.’ The neighboring Cowichan tribe once attacked the Comox people, and the women and children mysteriously vanished. The people believed that the plateau was inhabited by evil spirits which consumed anyone who walked through it.

From then on, the tribal elders forbade their people from going to the plateau; hence the name ‘Forbidden Plateau.’ The mountain was undisturbed for 200 years, until the interest for winter recreation arose. A ski lift was installed in 1949 over the steep, mellow and rigged lines. Skiers then took to the natural terrain through the 50s, 60s and 70s. Snowboarders joined the skiers later on in the 80s and 90s. The lodge collapsed during the 1999 winter due to excessive snow load, leading to the closure of the facility. There afterwards, Forbidden Snowboards took over the facility.

The Movie’s Premiere And World Tour

Prime Cut Premiere

Meathead Films in collaboration with UVM’s Ski & Snowboard Club and The Main Idea premiered Prime Cut on the 30th of September in Burlington, VT. It was a double premiere with The Main Idea also premiering their debut film Prologue. Prime Cut also made its world wide debut at the International Freeski Film Festival in Quebec, Canada.

The premiere was a night of celebration rather than your normal movie premiere; Meathead Films were reflecting back on their 10 years of existence. Meathead Films co-founder Chris James shared with the crowd that attended the premiere “Grind it out, keep doing what you do, and keep the shred alive.” He further added “having the closing segment be all Burlington urban skiing didn’t hurt either.”

Geoff McDonald said, “It was a great way to celebrate 10 years.” The movie was premiered in UVM just like all other Meathead Productions. McDonald added, “It’s the home grounds of where it all began; it’s always fun to have our first premiere of the year at UVM. This being the one movie that we look back at some of the UVM footage, it was pretty fun to show what kind of people we were in college to the whole college crowd.”

After the premiere, the movie began the Prime Cut tour which will see the movie make over 60 stops through the US and Canada.

If you haven’t watched it yet, you should get online and watch Voleurz hit film ‘That’s Fine.’ The highly anticipated winter sports movie showcases a mix of the best skiing, skateboarding and snowboarding tricks. The movie is simply about friends having fun on the snow; what could be better than that?

Creating Winter Sports Movies Inspired By Good Vibes, Creative Juices And A Little Bit Of Scotch

Voleurz have year after year dropped some of the best winter sports movies which have gone on to win a number of awards and accolades from both winter sports professionals and the fans. Voleurz’s Darren Rayner explained, “Take 20 maniac skiers, snowboarders and skateboarders. Mix them in a crock pot full of good vibes, some creative juices, and a little bit of scotch. And bam, you’ve got a Voleurz movie. That’s Fine.”

Based in Vancouver, the clothing brand has made a name for itself by releasing awe striking winter sports movie over the years. ‘That’s Fine’ is a multi-sports movie which documents the exploits of skiers, skateboarders and snowboarders.

When asked what the highlights of the film were, Rayner added “Witnessing KC Deane send himself off the Mother drop in the Whistler backcountry. Mason, KC, Justin VDP and myself had a 4:30am start at a sled zone near Pemberton, BC. It was a pitch black sled ride up into the mountains, and as we reached our spot, golden light rolled over the peaks. It was on. A few hucks later KC nailed a burly corked 720. We also got to witness Dane Tudor slay a nearby line for the PBP movie, which was the cherry on top. A celebratory breakfast ensued.”

An Award Winning Team Featured In The Award Winning Movie

That's Fine

‘That’s Fine’ features some of the best winter sports professionals in their respective fields. Some of the sports professionals featured in the movie include KC Deane, Max Hill, Tyler Holm, Bill, Justin VDP, Warren Williams, Jake Black, Braden Dean, and Andrew Jackson amongst other professionals.

The movie was released on November 11th and is available online for free viewing. The movie is currently on a global premiere tour set to screen in Canada, UK, US, Spain, Australia, Norway, Germany and France.

Fun Comes With A Few Glitches

Darren Rayner explained that they had quite a few low moments during the shoot. When they were shooting in spring around the Whistler backcountry region, Shayne Zwickel suffered from a failed cliff descent which saw him drop 30 ft down onto an old gigantic tree. Rayner explained, “Luckily we were prepared, with radios, a safety blanket, more than enough people, and all the essentials to keep Shayne stabilized. The heli arrived after a very long 2-hour wait, and they flew Shayne to the ER. Somehow he walked out of the ER the next morning, albeit with soft tissue damage and some serious bruising. We were all expecting much worse.”

The team also had to battle with excessive snow in early 2009 which made it nearly impossible to shoot. “Sleds were constantly getting stuck, and athletes were literally swimming in powder. However, Riley Leboe was able to keep his skis afloat for a few mere seconds and nailed a FREESKIER cover shot during one of these tits deep days, so I guess it’s probably a good thing!” Rayner explained.

What Next For Voleurz?

Asked what they have planned next, Rayner said “Our plan is to produce a really fast paced 25-minute film to be released for free in October. We have some amazing ideas for a webisode series that I’m really stoked to announce. But you’ll have to wait until January to hear more about it all.”

The White Rush – The Toughest "Everyman" Ski Race In The World

First held 12 years ago, the White Rush is considered the toughest "everyman" ski race in the world; held at the end of the season it attracts ski fans from all over the world to St Anton am Arlberg.

Route map of White Rush
Photo: Tourist Office St. Anton Tourism

The Nine Kilometer Cult Ski Race In St. Anton

Any weekend runner who runs a marathon knows, at the very best, he will only be able to do it in around 4 hours. He also knows that he won’t win a marathon with a time like that. Even so, thousands of weekend runners swarm the big city marathons, not to challenge the three African professional runners who have been invited to run – but to face their own inner demons around the 42 kilometer course. Likewise with the White Rush, not every participant will stand a chance of winning, but that is not what this race is about. The White Rush demands everything from every participant – to the very limits of athletic ability. Anyone who reaches the finish line of the White Rush in St Anton am Arlberg, the toughest ski race in the world, is a winner – regardless if he finishes 1st, 10th or 420th- because he has conquered the course and his own fears.

If You Want To Win You Must Beat Local Hero, Paul Schwarzacher

So far, no-one has beaten the record time of 7 minutes, 48 seconds, held by local hero, Paul Schwarzacher. 11 to 18 minutes are good average times. But no record lasts forever, so certainly this year there will be those who will try to end Paul Schwarzacher’s winning streak, so we will see if anyone has what is takes, or if Paul will triumph yet again. One thing is for sure -no matter how the race finishes up, the proud adversaries are happy to be here again. Of course the race promises plenty of excitement for the spectators. Images from the track will be shown on a big screen as well as the exciting start. The race will be broadcast live on www.stantonamarlberg.com.
No ski event without a party!

The new Energy Forum in Lech, Lech am Arlberg, is of international standing and is held under the auspices of the Energy Commissioner, Guenther H. Oettinger, and run by the Lech local church.

Energy Systems in Europe

Energy is a pre-requisite for life. It is based on wealth, is the source of power and not infrequently, the true reason for wars.

The world’s growing demand for energy provides a further rise in oil and gas prices. The competition for energy from emerging countries likes China, India, Thailand, Malaysia etc, calls into question many concerns about CO2 emissions, global warming and its consequences – not the least of which was the nuclear accident in Japan’s nuclear power plant in Fukushima – as fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas and nuclear fuel (uranium) resources are limited.

The Energy Supply for Europe and the world is changing

Renewable energy on the rise
CCL Photo: Martin A.

There must be an energy transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy such as: wind energy, hydropower, solar, bio-energy, geothermal, wave energy and other alternative energy sources.

Image #2 Renewable energy on the rise

So far, political discussions on alternative energy production and energy use have been slowed down by the power of global, energy giants and their lobbyists who earn a lot of money by being in control of increasingly scarce supplies of fossil fuels. I have written here a “lot of money” not “good” money, as the money is most definitely not “earned” here.

The “Lech Energy Forum”, an energy forum of international standing lays claim to the European energy debate and will be opinion forming: if we look at what people have actually announced their participation in this energy event, it may be assumed that the Lech Energy Forum will meet the highest of standards.

The following have announced their participation in the “Lech Energy Forum”

Energy Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger

Lidegaard Martin, Minister of Energy of the current EU Presidency country of Denmark

The Austrian Energy Minister Mitterlehner

The Lithuanian Prime Minister Kubilius

Energy ministers from bordering European countries

Governor Mark Wallner of the host region of Vorarlberg

Numerous representatives of major European energy companies

RWE’s supervisory board member, Wolfgang Key

Dick Benschop, Shell

Eldar Saetre, Statoil

In the first Lech Energy Forum will be four sets of questions will be paid special attention:

What is the European energy landscape design in 2030?

How to achieve fair energy prices?

How to get public support for the necessary restructuring of the energy system?

What are the prospects for co-operation with partners beyond European borders?

The number 13 has had many impacts over the history as some consider it lucky while others steer clear from it thinking it’s an omen of evil. And in the case of our event, 13 seems to have a lucky aura this year since the event is gaining prosperity and the participants are rejoicing in a good weather; snow conditions are at their finest while the snowy ground represents a sturdy base for the race.

Longboard Classic Stuben am Arlberg start
