Cristian Zuzunaga runner - Campaign for Wool

The Campaign for Wool are hosting Wool House which is the world’s largest showcase of wool. The event is being held in the stunning West Wing of Somerset House in central London and will be open to the public from the 13th to 24th March 2013.

Wool House will present a vision for wool as a modern, versatile, lifestyle fibre and there will be a number of displays showcasing interiors, fashion and the world of artisan and craft making, along with a hi-tech educational suite.

Spanish designer Cristian Zuzunaga was commissioned by the Campaign for Wool to design a runner for the corridor at Somerset House. The design inspiration for the runner was to create a showpiece that demonstrated the huge range of colours available in plain dye carpet in a pantone or a paint chart style of little squares.

Cristian's use of colour and pixelated designs are both unique and well renowned, so he was the perfect fit. Brintons were chosen to make Cristians stunning design in to a reality.

Cristian vistited the Brintons HQ and manufacturing plant in Kidderminster, Worcestershire to see the runner being produced on our High Definition looms.

This is the third collaboration between Brintons and The Campaign for Wool. In 2011 Brintons produced a bespoke runway carpet designed by Erdem that formed part of the groundbreaking ‘Wool Modern’ exhibition in London and in September last year we also provided carpet for the ‘Wool Uncovered’ event at Bryants Park, NYC.

The Designer
The Barcelona-born Cristian Zuzunaga trained as a type designer, and his love for letterpress squares evolved into a fixation on the pixel, “the icon of our time.”

The Things
Photo-derived pixel patterns. His fabric for Kvadrat on the Moroso armchair in his Shoreditch studio is based on a London cityscape; the scarf mosaic is Moroccan-inspired.

The Look
Block party. Zuzunaga’s pixels are a metaphor for a fragmented time. “These shapes are rooted in our unconscious,” he says. “I’m trying to play at a psychological level.”

EB&Flow is currently showing Cristian Zuzunaga’s first solo exhibition in London. Zuzunaga’s practice is broad in scope and he embraces the role of an artist, photographer, printmaker and designer.

Renowned as a textile and graphic designer, Zuzunaga is recognised for his brightly multi-coloured and distinctive pixelated textile prints.Alongside his success in the design world, Zuzunaga has been a practising artist throughout his career.

His work includes photography, letterpress, video art and sculpture, comfortably bridging the line between art and design. The exhibition at EB&Flow will guide the viewer through the artist’s investigation of the city as a metaphor.

He examines architecture and the way global cities such as Barcelona, London, New York and Shanghai are constructed, inspiring and giving form to his versatile visual vocabulary.

Inspired by philosophy, architecture, anthropology and the psychology of C.G. Jung, Zuzunaga’s work explores notions of the self and identity, how these are defined and how they relate to the world.

Combining analogue and digital technologies, Zuzunaga investigates the microscopic patterns created by the symbiotic relationships between humans and their environment.

Under his design label Zuzunaga, focusing on interior design using printed textiles, the artist has collaborated with well-established companies such as Tate, Kvadrat, Wallpaper, Moroso, Belmacz, Ligne Roset and Nanimarquina.

Trece es su número fetiche y trece son los años que lleva Zuzunaga asentado en Londres. Fanático de las tipografías, este talentoso diseñador de creatividad ilimitada se dio a conocer por su habilidad combinando esas pequeñas partículas llamadas píxels. Hace malabarismos descomponiendo el color y es gran conocedor del mundo de los tejidos. Marcas como Kvadrat, Ligne Roset, nanimarquina, Moroso, Tate Gallery o Hästens comercializan sus diseños y está presente en Moss NY. Marcado por los genes artísticos de su familia, Zuzunaga también desarrolla proyectos artísticos, muchos de ellos inspirados en las grandes metrópolis como Nueva York, Londres, Shanghai o Barcelona. Tiene estudio en Londres y showroom en Barcelona.
