The Week in Politics

By Matt Withers on Oct 13, 08 02:52 PM

Would you like to not only read but actually hear Media Wales' Martin Shipton and myself pontificating on all matters political, including the surprise announcement by Environment Minister Jane Davidson that she is to step down and the Welsh Liberal Democrat leadership contest?

Of course you would. So why not click on this link here?

Joined-up drinking

By Matt Withers on Oct 3, 08 09:50 AM

Away from the chaos currently engulfing the Welsh Conservatives, here's a little example of Tory joined-up thinking.

July 2, 2008: South Wales East AM William Graham tables a motion in the Senedd calling on the Assembly Government to recognise "the importance of educating young people about the devastating health and social implications of alcohol abuse"

October 1, 2008: The Welsh Conservatives set up the following stall at Trinity College, Carmarthen, trying to attract young people to the party:

The Fall

By Matt Withers on Sep 29, 08 06:28 PM

A press release comes through from Help The Aged regarding a campaign launch in the Senedd on Wednesday:

Joyce Watson AM hosts a briefing session for Assembly Members where older people and professionals will provide an overview of the devastating impact that falls can have for an older person. The briefing will outline the strategic contribution that the Welsh Assembly Government can take in relation to falls prevention and the actions that can be taken locally.

Good stuff. Bit late for this chap, mind.

Bourne comedian

By Matt Withers on Sep 29, 08 02:06 PM

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Conservative conference speech by Nick Bourne must contain an attempt at humour. Here's this year's, delivered in Birmingham today:

We were promised new ideas and energy for a thriving Welsh economy - but we are yet to see anything different.
In fear of doing anything, Plaid has done nothing.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas's gaffes were the highlights of an otherwise dull year.
In fact, I'll give a box of cigars to anyone who can name something Plaid has got out of their coalition with Labour.
But I must warn you I will be asking Rhodri Glyn Thomas to announce the winner.

Perhap it loses something when written down.

Lembit4president

By Matt Withers on Sep 25, 08 10:56 AM

Lembit Öpik stepped down yesterday as his Liberal Democrats' spokesman on housing. In fact, most people didn't know he was their spokesman on housing anyway - including Lembit Öpik, who failed to speak at his party's debate on housing last week.

So it's all systems go for his faltering campaign to become President of the Lib Dems, and his promotional video can be seen on YouTube here. It's fair to say he's fairly immodest about his considerable talents.

Update: Clearly others don't agree - this poll puts Lembit on 12% among activists.

The Week in Politics

By Matt Withers on Sep 22, 08 05:00 PM

Each and every Monday* there'll be an audio section up on WalesOnline.co.uk looking at the week ahead in politics. Today Martin Shipton and myself were fortunate enough to be joined around the table by Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Adam Price. You can hear what he had to say here.

*Except when there isn't.

The Bourne Injury

By Matt Withers on Sep 22, 08 04:41 PM

bourne.jpg"So what did you get up to on holiday?"

Poor Nick Bourne, leader of the Welsh Conservatives. He did more research into standards of the Croatian health service while on holiday in Zagreb last week than perhaps he had intended to. Here is he snapped returning to Cardiff this morning - let's hope fellow AMs are sympathetic when they return to the Senedd after a summer off tomorrow...

Take Five 22 September

By Matt Withers on Sep 22, 08 04:29 PM

1 Ordovicius reveals the results of his poll on the Assembly Government's most impressive minister. Alun Ffred Jones' brief tenure as Heritage Minister has already wowed 9% of people.

2 Betsan Powys looks at the Welsh Labour leadership battle which is most emphatically not going on...

3 ...hence this speech by Huw Lewis is most emphatically not a pitch for it.

4 Paul Waugh has got hold of David Miliband's first cabinet, without a Welsh Secretary. Daniel Finkelstein has held his glass to a wall and heards Miliband is swapping portfolios with Alistair Darling.

5 Iain Dale reveals what Jed Bartlet might have said to Barack Obama, were Jed Bartlet real and not a character in a TV show. Tomorrow: what advice John McCain has gleaned from Morph.

Bunker mentality

By Matt Withers on Sep 15, 08 06:05 PM

You'd need a better grounding than me in the nefarious world of skullduggery which is Gwynedd politics to get some of the jokes in these videos, but they've certainly racked up the views in the few days in which they've been up on YouTube.

Who's behind them? Llais Gwynedd deny all knowledge, I'm told.

A cunning plot

By Matt Withers on Sep 15, 08 03:25 PM

Newport West MP Paul Flynn thinks he's uncovered the truth behind the stream of Labour MPs and junior government members queuing up to demand Gordon Brown bows to a leadership election:

"The only sensible explanation I can suggest is that it's a ploy to distract attention from the Lib-Dems conference."

Quite. Because it really takes something as potentially historic as the defenestration of a serving Prime Minister to deflect the general public's collective attention from a Nick Clegg speech...
