Living up to the blog title

ORN: 4.58 miles in 50:03. My pace was actually pretty good given that I was high-stepping through snow, slush, and ice throughout more than half of the run. Today was rainy, cold, and 35°. I would like to say that as I ran I fantasized that I was running across the tundra with a horned helmet and a battle-ax while terrified villagers fled my furious Nordic wrath, but I was mainly worrying about falling on my ass and frostbite. There was about a mile stretch of the whole course, my usual jaunt down the RiverWalk, that was not an icy mire. I must have flown across these sections because I was tip-toeing across the slick spots.

Whatever muscles one uses lifting the thighs up high -- quads? -- will be tingling tomorrow, no doubt.

Last night, we received four inches of snow and a quarter to half an inch of ice. My teeming hordes of Canadian readers will chuckle that I am remarking on what would be, to them, an unremarkable, mild summer day. It seems to me that snows are becoming more and more rare at my latitude than they were when I was growing up. This morning, the snow and ice had changed over to very cold rain, and the roads were a slushy, but mostly harmless, mess. The temperatures edged over the freezing point around 8:00 or so this morning, and so that combined with the steady rain means the probability of sledding and snowman fabrication is low.

As I ran, I rocked out to the following:
  1. Love Is a Stranger - Eurythmics
  2. Got My Own Thing Now - Squirrel Nut Zippers
  3. I Was Stabbed By Satan - K'naan
  4. Get it Together - Rackit Allstar Feat. Spider
  5. Wake The Town - U-Roy
  6. Surface to Air - The Chemical Brothers
  7. Im Rhythmus Bleiben - Front 242
  8. St. James Infirmary - Cab Calloway and His Orchestra
  9. Love Buzz - Nirvana
  10. Wasp, Behind The Wall Of Sleep, Bassically, N.I.B. - Black Sabbath
  11. Protex Blue - The Clash
  12. Dotted Line - Bim Skala Bim
  13. Mr. Brown - Bob Marley

  1. Rebekah and I did trails today at Seneca - the tundra-esque landscape was a ridiculously hard workout. With every step, we sank a few inches. Plus, the ice sheet on top of the snow (albeit covered by another layer of snow) kept jabbing us in the ankles if we didn't lift our feet high enough.

  2. You're right - I do find that funny! We woke up to 20 cm this morning and more on the way on thursday night. So far this month we've had 50 cm. That said, running in slush is far worse than deep snow because of how cold and wet your feet get. Good for you for braving the weather!

  3. Ok Ed - I was just over visiting Topher and read your comment after his tights post and then I read your viking visions....

putting those two things together made me laugh until I cried....

Now if the weather would just give us something to smile or laugh about - when did winter get this long and miserable?
