House project: Before and after
Wednesday, May 7, 2008
When my husband met me, he said that I was a diamond in the rough. He saw the potential that everyone else seemed to miss, which includes the boyfriend that dumped me and all the folks that warned him that he was marrying beneath himself. He’s still waiting on the diamond part I think, but it’s there. I mean well most of the time, and I love Jesus.
I like houses with potential too. I could see this one was going to be a beauty. It is. It’s our best rehab job yet, and it also happens to be the only one we didn’t do ourselves while living in it. But anyway. We’re close to the finish line.
Here’s the main living area of the house when we bought it:
This is how it’s been sitting for a couple months:

And here it is now, minus the red paint that I changed my mind about:

Very nice! Would your husband rent you out so you could come and share your vision with me?

“Renting me out” sounds a little questionable…

Beautiful! I love the paint color

you have no idea the envy you are causing in me right now when I see your floors. I am in the midst of an ongoing battle with my husband to rid ourselves of carpeting. Sigh! I will go pray through now.

Wow. Love the floors. And the windows! And the paint color. But I am partial to red. [Our living room walls are red.]

That is beautiful!!! I love it.

Yeah, I was like, “Self, pretty good call there,” until I found out it was primer and not in fact the color I chose.
Hardwood is the most expensive of the options, but my allergies demand it. I am hoping it will give me some relief. (Carpet is a haven for dust mites.)

LOVE the hardwood floors, if I could have afforded it when we purchased this house, I would have done the Hardwood upgrade. Maybe some day…

That house is so beautiful! Did it just take your breath away when you stepped inside?
And, what color is that? Blue? Lavender? Primer gray? If it’s just the primer, what is the final color going to be? Inquiring minds want to know!
Also, was the plumbing functional this time? That has been a burning question in my mind since Greg’s little joke a few posts back.

It’s looking good and coming along very nicely. I, too, envy those floors. Right now our downstairs is bare concrete due to tearing out the carpet. We are leaning towards laminate, which will be much better than carpeting, but not as nice as real hardwood.

Love, love, love it. The floors are amazing. Couldnt you just look at them all day? I sure could! I love hard wood, and when we build/remodel the place we are saving to buy, we are doing hardwood! Kid friendly!

Our basement floors are painted concrete. They are being painted this week, actually, so I haven’t seen it yet.
Theresa, There is vinyl flooring that looks like hardwood. It’s what we had put down in our bathrooms. I was a little leery about it, but it is NICE. Consider that before the laminate. We had a Pergo thing in our last house, and I think the vinyl has a few advantages, one of which is price.

Yes, but it was the paint fumes I think. Seriously, yes, it’s nice and we’re thankful for it.
The final color is a blue gray, very close to what is on there now. Primer is 75% of the final color. Not sure what that means, but something the painter said…
The basement bathroom was functional, but the other plumbing is on a new septic which is torn up all over the yard right now. So, I had to use two flights of stairs in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, but I’m not pregnant, so I am not complaining.

Beautiful floors! I love the light colored wood with the cool color on the walls, even if it is just the primer. I’m with you on the allergies and carpeting thing. I wish I could afford and could talk DH into hardwood throughout our house.

Your new home is beautiful. We lived in KY while my husband was in seminary at Southern Seminary in Louisville. We lived in the country as well, and just fell in love with the hills and all the old homes. Your drive photos brought back a lot of memories.
One funny thing- the KY locals told us to get ready for the humidity during the summer. We were originally from Florida as well, and they told us KY humidity was MUCH worse than Florida humidity. Now we live in NC (another seminary move) and the locals here tell us the humidity is the worse anywhere. Of course, when we lived in Florida, we were convinced we had the worse weather in the country. Congrats on getting one step further!

Looks like you have some great natural light! I guess the Amish would be good about that…

Wow! Your home looks great! What kind of wood did you use on the floors? We have a room in our home that looks like the same shade of blue that you chose. It is such a peaceful color (even with 5 boys)and feels a tiny bit “beachy” in the summertime when I drag out the seashells for display. Bet you have a few of those.

We used wide plank pine.

Amy, can Catholics come visit you out there in that lovely house? I promise to earn my keep I’ll sit in the front window and you can charge your neighbours for the chance to gawk and point. (Surely I’d pass for “exotic” out there? I’m Irish, too, so I talk funny.) Sound good? I know we’re both sensible businesswomen.

Of course! But I didn’t know you were Catholic after all this time, Mrs. P?!

Thanks Amy!
Your floors look beautiful!
My dad is a pine plantation farmer. He might be disappointed to know that I didn’t recognize pine.
