Genevieve at Momologue is asking for bloggers to join her in blogging about Autism for April’s Autism Awareness Month. Autism now affects something like 1 in 150 children so it is likely that you know of someone on the Autism spectrum – even if you are not joining in by blogging the entries will be worth a read to increase your knowledge and understanding.
My youngest son has Fragile X Syndrome – the only currently known genetic cause of Autism and the most common known cause of inherited intellectual disability. As a carrier I too have some symptoms although carriers are not affected intellectually.

Hi – Thank you so much for participating in Blogging for Autism Awareness in April.
I’d love to have you as a guest blogger. I’ve heard of Fragile X Syndrome but am not very familiar with it. It would be great for me (and others) to be more aware of it!

Thanks Renny
Easter was very pleasant thanks. Not the usual easter egg hunt for us this year – my youngest turned 18 so we decided to have a parent rather than Easter bunny laid treasure hunt.

Hi !!!
My sons were tested for Fragile X due to their large foreheads (a family trait on my husband’s side)
I have one friend with a now adult son who has Fragile X.
I have never really understood it, so thank you for sharing and informing !!!

I am pleased that kids are being tested more for FX these days – means that the docs are more aware of it.
Although adult males with FX often have long faces this feature is often not present in young children – I think it is something that develops more over time – another result of loose connective tissue problems.
FX cannot be passed on from fathers to sons because they can only pass their y chromosome on to boys.

There is a lot unknown but it amazes me how much has been discovered and learned in recent times. The new research is really encouraging with drug treatment going through human trials and a method of actually reversing the effects on the brain just discovered (in mice only as yet)

Thanks for the info babe. Will have a look at the other participants but I don’t know if I am going to join in, blog wise. Probably will during the Australian Autism week.

Thanks for this article and link 🙂
My son was tested for Fragile X after his autism diagnosis.
I think Aussie Autism month is in May, but it can’t hurt to bring people’s attention to this condition at anytime.

I think only between about 4-7% of kids with Autism have Fragile X and although most FX kids have some Autism symptoms not all are diagnosed as being Autistic.
You are right the more awareness and knowledge the better – Autism is so common and there is still a lot of misunderstanding about it in the wider community. That is obvious the way people stare at my son because of his unusual mannerisms, which of course as his mum I love because they are just part of what makes my son who he is.

Elyse Bruce is raising awareness and funds for autism with her “Countdown to Midnight” CD. It’s got awesome music on it, and best of all, the money gathered DOES NOT go to Autism Speaks, an organization considered offensive to most autistics.
Pass the word.

I am so glad you are helping spread awareness about autism. I have worked with many children suffering from autism and they are so misunderstood. I read a book last summer called The Curious Death of A Dog in the Night Time, write from the perspective a the fiction narrator an autistic young boy. Great read. Just thought I would recommend it.

There is definitely a lack of understanding and awareness of autism. Thank you for consolidating and sharing these articles. Hopefully the next April awareness month will be more receptive.
