Very funny! I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, so I know exactly what you mean. Maybe that is why I am on the computer at 11 pm!

G416: you are dead-on. My Mom always tells me how she managed two little kids, cleaned the house, cooked, went to work, blah, blah, blah.... And no problem. But then she remembers that she was much younger than us, when she had her two kids. And partially, I think that you just forget all the difficulties after 20-30 years and remember only the pleasant moments most of the time.

Even if one kid is older it's still difficult. My eight year old daughter will sit near me at the computer and chew my ear off while I try to write. After a while it feels like I have a swarm of bees in my head. And my one year old...he wants to grab whatever he can off the desk or slam on the keys of the keyboard. When he lets me be it means he's off to no good destroying something.

It's one or the other. Them or me. More often than not they win. That's ok since I love spending time with them but I really can't hope to get a lot else accomplished.

My children are now in their late 30s, so I raised my children in that far distant era to which Guiness416 alludes. I think the biggest difference is the expectation these days that parents expect to share parenting and home duties. In MY DAY, fathers left for work and came home from work. Their duty was to make the money and do the manly chores. Mothers took care of the children and the house. Period. Fathers didn't. If a child woke in the night, mother took care of the child. Pediatrician appointments? Mother took the children. Dinners and laundry? I wouldn't have let my husband touch the clothes or into my kitchen!

I truly don't know which is the better model--there's something to be said for both of them--but you have to live in your own time, and these times would look askance at the parenting/marriage styles of the late 60's and early 70's. (But there's something to be said for the efficient division of labor!!)

Kids are resilient - just give them a chew toy and get your work done. :)
When I was in 1st grade (and my brother was in pre-school), my mom moved to another town with just the two of us, leaving my dad and my other brother in the old town. They did this because my dad was finishing up his residency, and mom needed to start hers (which was based in the other town).
So for a full year, my mom managed a 1st grader and a pre-schooler (who both got chicken pox during that time) while she was doing her residency and studying for her qualification exams and being a single parent. In a brand new town. Did I mention we had just moved to the country (from overseas) a year prior?

We turned out all right. :)
