In the issue of Fortune I just read on the plane, the magazine asked 19 notables for the best advice they ever received.  To be sure, some of the guidance is banal and self-serving. But some is pretty good.  Here are my three favorite responses, which range from Zen-like to utterly pragmatic:

"Whatever anybody says or does, assume positive intent." -- Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of Pepsico

"Get sales up, and keep expenses down." -- Nelson Peltz, CEO of Trian Fund Management

"Never take the last dollar off the table." -- Joanna Shields, President of Beebo.com

My true favorite, though, is SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk describing the worst advice he ever received:  "My parents advised me to ignore bullies.  That doesn't work.  You have to punch them on the nose."

Now over to you.  What's the best advice you ever received?  What's the worst?
