Why Do They Have to Grow Up?

The past few weeks have been chock-full of reminders that the Toddler is indeed growing up, despite my fervent attempts to keep her little forever. I've tried depriving her of food. I've tried cramming her into clothes that are far too small. I've even tried shoving down on her head in an effort to make her shrink. It's a no go--she is growing up.

First there was the information from daycare about the Gym Bus. Apparently my little one is big enough to participate in the insanity that is many kids crammed onto a little bus jumping and bouncing off the walls. While I hope the adults who run it wear helmets, full body armor, and ear plugs to protect themselves from the kids, I think they might want to invest in some extra protection from me. I want to kick somebody in the boy bits for implying that the kid is old enough for organized crime in the form of gymnastics classes.

Another reminder came last weekend on the day that we tried a few pair of Dora underwear on for size. While we had to suspend potty-training activities due to a bout of (still going on DAMMITTOACHEEDOUBLEHOCKEYSTICKS) diarrhea, seeing her little tushy waddle around in so-called big girl undies put a little lump in my throat.

Every day there are verbal reminders that she's growing up as she is moving closer and closer to becoming a master of the English language and is gradually losing her grasp of Toddlerese. I very nearly shed a tear when I heard her pronounce "yellow" with a "y" at the front instead of using "l" as is her tradition. Thank ye gods of Mommy Sanity that it was just a one time occurrence, because I am not ready to give up the lellow.

And then there was this:

And I think I might cry. CRY. Bawl like a baby. Have a nervous breakdown. Cry a river, build a bridge, and refuse to get over it. Why?

This:

Go back to the first photo and take a close look at Baby Shell (the doll). Notice her pants? Now look at the itty bitty Alexis photo again. SAME PANTS.

Good grief. There's not enough fabric in those pants to cover one of the Toddler's legs.

Excuse me while I go curl up in the corner and cry uncontrollably for the next few days.

so maybe I wasn't that far off with the heckling about needing a larger house for more little ones.... ;)

Oh, poor Silly Billy Burgh. I know that mad you sniffle. I love that Big Water made a surprise appearance.

Aww. :( I know how you feel. Every day they grow up more don't they? That picture is adorable btw. :)

Aw, your baby. I feel your pain, girl. The same 4 YO who was always glued to my hip didn't even care that I couldn't go to the beach with her and Daddy today since I had to stay home with her sick baby brother. *sniff*

Alexis is such a cutie!

sigh.

Oh you poor BABY. I'm so sorry. At least she still loves Baby Shell and Dora and doesn't think they're for babies. She's still little, Mama. Really.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFlea

I've been crying in corners for the last several years now.

Occasionally, my teenager hugs me through one of those moments. And my head fits on his shoulder.

When was that ok?? Its bad enough that he got older. Did he have to get bigger than me, too?

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Sports Mama

Yep! Save those doll clothes! She'll use them to play with for years! lol

I feel your pain, with every complex sentence that comes out of 3 year old Oliver's mouth.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKim

How freakin adorable!!

Hallie :)

Awww! She looks just like me when I leave the house! LOL!

Mine are 10 and 9 and I keep hoping they'll suddenly and miraculously go back in time to 3 and 2!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterwendy

Aw, sweetie. It does suck that they have to grow up, but she's just beautiful. She's growing up happy, healthy, and in the camera's eye, which will give you lots of pictures to reminisce with.

Peace - D

Awe...those pictures are so sweet. And yes no matter what you do you can't stop the growing. I've tried.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

I've been feeling that way too lately! I just try to focus on the good things that are coming up in the next stage and the things about the baby stage I didn't like - that helps sometimes.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVerWaynia

You've got my deepest sympathies, I'm so sorry.

And I just realized how much A looks like daddy in the newborn picture. I didn't know.

My kid starts kindergarten next year. It's killing me.

So ... I have that gag moment, too, when comparing Sumo to his old clothes ... but then I realize he wore them like 2 weeks ago and it makes me feel a little better. At the rate I'm going Sumo will be in Depends by age 18 months because he'll outgrow all diapers. He's already busting out of a size large swim diaper.

But, that being said, she looks like SUCH A BIG GIRL with Baby Shell standing there next to her. Gawd ... enjoy that football-shaped-headed Dora while you can because she'll be out of Dora underwear before you know it!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTranny Head

Doesn't it go fast? I mean everyone says, enjoy it when they are little cause they grow up so fast. But they do grow up fast. I swear. My daughter lamented to me the other day that she wants her brother to stay two forever.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOutnumbered2to1

I kept thinking mine was going to stop and all of the sudden he decided that it was ok to turn EIGHT. I don't remember approving that!!

There are good parts about them growing up too... I promise. I does go too, too fast...

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAutumn

Awwww! I will got cry with you. The other day N's TedBear was wearing the outfit she came home from the hopsital in. SoI know the feeling.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

When it becomes obvious to me that mine are growing up, I inevitably get pregnant again. Watch out!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Mommy

Do you want to form a support group or should I?! I am right there with you!

It has a way of sneaking up on us, doesn't it? *sniffle*

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

I understand completely! Each new thing that Dylan does I have a mixture of pride and sadness! Have you seen the movie Click with Adam Sandler? Good Lord, I watched it last night and I was bawling like a baby. I don't know about you, but each day I work, I wonder what I'm missing. I hate that. Damn, could you pass the tissues, get up off the floor, and say something positive or sarcastic?

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I so feel ya. Sometimes, I wish there was a PAUSE button on life.

That Alexis. Cute then and NOW.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMamaGeek

Hey, I hope you noticed how casually I popped over here this morning...

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHRH

I feel your pain. I was just commenting to my hubby last night about the picture we had taken before Christmas for our cards...how the older two boys had changed ALOT. More then the baby (who coincidentally is not a baby anymore) and that was just 6 months ago. HOLD ME!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHRH

Awwww! Why do they have to grow up so fast. The Kid just turned FOUR yesterday. I know when I start putting his old clothes on the baby I will be all weepy.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbeach mama

Oh I agree! It SUCKS. Just wait till you call her your little baby and she says, " I NOT A BAAAABBBYYYY!!! I BIG!"
Yeah that's what mine does now. Sniff.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarmarbug

I'll let you go cry in that corner if I can cry with you.

We got Jonathan's hair cut this week and holy crap he looked like a little boy, not my baby.

It's only going to get worse from here, I know, but I'm having the hardest time with him growing so fast and thought I was the only one who became weepy about such things.

I suppose I'm not after all.

Touching post...and funny too.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJonny's Mommy

That IS so sad!

And, I hate to even mention this...but are you going to continue to call your blog "Burgh Baby" once your little one is obviously a baby no more? Potty trained, no lellow, etc? Of course, our kids are always our babies, so there would be nothing wrong if you didn't!

Cute pics!!! Love the matching crocs!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterIrene

Sounds like you need a baby Shell too! HA!

They do grow way TOO fast. I am always bemoaning that fact on my blog (probably too much).

At least you still have "lellow."

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterElaine A.

I am right there with you...My Miss Peach turned THREE this weekend! Where did my baby go? *sniff*

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNap Warden

Oh that is tough to swallow, try wine, it helps it go down.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

OK, uhm, maybe I'm just having a particularly hormonal day today, but I'm literally crying here. How can she be big enough to hold a doll who wears her old clothes.

That's just not right...

What's next? Her first Dora training bra?

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCatwoman

**sniff**

I've noticed, too, that Alexis is looking more and more like a little girl and less and less like a baby. So sad! Fortunately, she'll be adorable her whole life, unless you move to LA and she learns to be horrible. Which she won't.

Looking at the picture of her with Baby Shell, I notice that Alexis appears to be standing in the middle of what appears to be a 4-lane road. Um, are you trying to keep her from growing up by ending it all now? NOOOOOOO!!!

BTW, love the matching tunic and Crocs!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSarah O.

I'm crying with you....by do they have to grow up?

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPam

At each stage you miss the last stage but are so in LOVE with the current stage it helps you get through.

Then they go through puberty. Crap.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKiki

That is so sad!!! I know I keep thinking one one hand it is so neat to watch your kid grow and learn and discover the world....BUT...on the other hand...what's happened to my baby?!?!?!!?

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

Oh I meant to tell you that those freaky babies you used to post? They were a hot search item on msn last week. I saw that and thought of you.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarmarbug

I'm feeling the same pains as my 2&3 year olds turn 10 before my eyes (at least they act like it sometimes). I never thought I'd have them...and I didn't give them permission to get big...EVER. *sigh*

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

i feel your pain!! my oldest is almost 13...not months...years!! and my youngest...he is almost as tall as my 10 year old. so, i'll curl in a corner with you...

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermelissa

Awwww that is so cute that her doll is wearing her baby clothes!!!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTammy

Yup. The only thing to do is have another one.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDapoppins

Seriously, they grow way too fast! But look at it this way, she's not a teenager. Oh Lord, when did that happen, I'm out of my mind with that!

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Dude, you are soooo pregnant right now.

July 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjust jamie

awww, that is so cute. but yeah if it was my kid I'd probably cry a little bit too. goes fast huh?
