Burlington County Football Club awards 9 scholarships

Three of this year's nine Bill Gordon-George Masters Memorial Football Club scholarship recipients are headed for King's College. Two more are headed for Rowan University.

The club named nine Burlington County high school football players earlier this week who will receive $500 to put toward the start of their college education. Bordentown's Wayne Cobbs, Cherokee's Pat White and Terrance Osborne of Holy Cross will travel to Wilkes Barre, Pa. to begin it at King's.

Chiefs coach P.J. Mehigan called White “the heartbeat and pulse of the team; a natural leader, a hard hitter and a highly intense football player.” The free safety and team captain was a participant in Thursday night's South Jersey Football Coaches' Association all-star game.

Osborne, a two-time all-conference selection at cornerback, plans to study business administration in college.

Bordentown coach Larry Larned called Cobbs, a defensive back and running back, “a natural leader who worked hard from day one and made those around him much better.”

Delran's Max Larson and Lenape's Phil Bolger are bound for Rowan in September.

Larson played his first game on Rowan's turf Thursday, when he scored the first touchdown in the SJFCA game. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Bears, with two years at quarterback and four at defensive line and linebacker.

Bolger, on offensive lineman, had a 3.6 GPA and earned captain's status.

Chris Salaga of Florence, a three-time, first-team all-county selection by the Burlington County Times, wants to study biochemistry at Ursinus College. “He's a young man who loves to play the game,” Flashes coach Joe Frappolli said. “And he plays it hard, from sideline to sideline.”

Don Fisher of Maple Shade, another SJFCA all-star participant, will take his 4.408 GPA to Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he will study accounting or teaching.

Cinnaminson's Kyle Hess, a running back and linebacker, is headed for Delaware Valley College to study criminal justice.

“Commitment, toughness and discipline are characteristics that define Kyle,” Cinnaminson coach Mario Patrizi said. “We are very proud of Kyle and there is no doubt that he will be very successful in the future.”

Tre Johnson of Burlington Township, who coach Tom Maderia called “the team's best cover corner,” will attend Western Connecticut. He was a two-year starter and letterman for the Falcons and a first-team all-conference selection.

The Gordon-Masters football club, which was started in 1971, awards these scholarships “to assist high school senior football student-athletes from the county as they venture forth to fulfill their college aspirations.”

Northern Burlington coach Jon Reising served this year as the club's president. Gregg Atzert is the executive director.
