LONDON (AP) — McDonald’s will be scouring its friers for leftover oil and recycling it into biodiesel to power its fleet of British delivery vehicles, the fast-food chain said today.
The move will save about 1,700 tons of carbon annually, which is the equivalent of removing about 2,400 cars from the road each year, when the national rollout is completed next year, the Oak Brook, Ill., company said.
“We are delighted to now have a practical, efficient use for [the used cooking oil] within our own business,” said McDonald’s Corp. Senior Vice President Matthew Howe.
McDonald’s said the fuel changeover would begin with 20 of its 155-vehicle British fleet converting to a mixture of used cooking oil and pure rapeseed oil.
