Food Stamp Challenge Diary

by: Mark Leno

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 10:37:56 AM PDT

(Wow, this really does sound like a challenge. - promoted by atdleft)

I truly appreciate the support and encouragement I have received from colleagues and friends as I started this week to learn for myself if food stamp benefits are enough to eat adequately and nutritiously, while balancing a busy life.  I can already tell you that the experience has truly lived up to its name— it really is a challenge.

Yesterday I began the day with a bowl of cereal, which isn’t a huge departure from what I usually eat.  But as the day wore on, I began to notice the many food choices that were available to me before the challenge, but are no longer.  A generous staff member happened to bring in four dozen hand-dipped chocolate strawberries.  An array of cheeses and fresh fruits tempted me in the Assembly member’s lounge.  All of it was off limits.

Mark Leno :: Food Stamp Challenge Diary
At lunchtime I prepared a bowl of chicken noodle soup.  The afternoon didn’t get much easier as directly following session I made a quick stop at an event overflowing with delicacies that a person on food stamps certainly couldn’t afford.

Having not eaten since my lunch soup, I headed back to work for a 7 p.m. continuation of our Budget Conference Committee.  A glass of water carried me through to it’s conclusion at 9:30 p.m.

When I arrived home at 10:30 p.m., the evening’s bowl of cereal could wait no longer.  The temptation to have a second bowl was tempered by the knowledge that the two boxes of cereal I bought on Sunday need to get me through the entire week.

As hungry as I am, this challenge has gripped me.  My intent is to continue it through the week.

Poor thing... (0.00 / 0)
And to think, there are people out there who have to eat like this ALL THE TIME. So what can be done to help these people afford better meals? As it was pointed out in the comments yesterday, raising food stamp benefits is a good start...
But it isn't enough.

I waa thinking yesterday about what else can be done. Well, I gues we CAN do something about this at the state AND federal level. We can give more kids some quality education, and a chance at college. We can make sure that workers are paid a living wage. We can make sure that not all of the monthly income is going toward that mortgage payment or that rent on the apartment.

Poverty is a complex issue, and we need to implement quite a few policy solutions to actually solve this problem. But in the mean time, we should thank Assm. Leno for bringing attention to this saddening yet VERY IMPORTANT issue.

being exposed to all that fancy food (8.00 / 1)
As far as all that luxurious food around just making it all the more miserable for you, don't forget that many of the lowest-wage workers are in janitorial, hotel and food service. They would have the same problem of being constantly exposed to nice food but not allowed to touch it. :-(

Another tip--Milk is really expensive. You could use powdered milk which is cheaper than fresh. With either powdered or fresh, you could mix in [extra/a little] water to make it last longer.

Yes, powdered milk is cheap... (0.00 / 0)
I remember all the stories from my mom of when she was a child, and her penny-pinching mother would buy powdered milk to save money. And as my grandfather wasn't working then (and doing something else that I can't mention in this thread), the family was depending on my grandmother's limited income from selling encyclopedias.

Yep, and ain't that a tough temptation? Just think of all those low-wage workers who always pass by those expensive fundraisers and parties and special receptions, yet never touch the caviar and the chocolate-dipped strawberries and the champagne. They're always exposed, but they can never take part. But then again, it's not like their experience is limited to food. : (
