Denham recall over?

by: Brian Leubitz

Wed May 07, 2008 at 17:08:59 PM PDT

You know that recall Denham thing? Never mind. I just got an update from the Capitol morning report saying the following:

Pro Tem Don Perata announces end to recall campaign for Sen. Jeff Denham at 5 p.m. on North Steps.

More will surely follow.

Update by Lucas: Full Transcript of the statement(s) on the flip.

Brian Leubitz :: Denham recall over?
Perata:

"Like all of you, I've been worried a lot about the economy - falling home prices, rising gas prices - and how hard it's getting for people to find a job.

I've talked with both Treasurer Lockyer and Controller Chiang about the state's cash situation - and the need to do everything we can to reach an agreement on the budget.

A long stalemate is the last thing we need. Without a budget - we run out of cash - the richest state in America gone broke!

We won't be paying our bills - and we won't be giving our schools, our emergency rooms and our police the resources they need.

So I met with Republican Leader Dave Cogdill - and I asked him how we could clear the decks and start making some progress. One issue kept coming up. The Denham recall.

So today - in the spirit of putting politics aside to solve problems - I'm ending the recall campaign.

You're bound to ask, so let me tell you - there was no deal, no quid pro quo.

This is my call - and my best judgment about how to stop the long, slow slide into another long stalemate.

I hope it pays off. Because the same old rhetoric won't get the job done.

Let me also say this to the people who have devoted so much time and effort on the recall: thank you. You've already changed things for the better.

The vote we couldn't get last year to close the tax loophole for yacht owners -we got that vote.

The vote we couldn't get to help homeowners facing foreclosure - we got that vote.

You put everyone here on notice - and I don't think people are going to forget that anytime soon."

Cogdill:

"I applaud the wisdom of Senator Perata in making this decision. This eliminates an unnecessary distraction in an already contentious budget year. This will allow us to focus on doing what voters expect from us: achieving a balanced, responsible budget."

If nothing else (8.00 / 2)
Nice Yacht Party shout out. I guess.

WTF? (8.00 / 1)
Maybe I'm more of a going for the jugular sort of person, but this really pisses me off.  We should be be trying to get to 2/3rd, not playing nice with the psychopaths.

Might I add (8.00 / 1)
Good riddance to Perata.  Let's hope we get some real Democratic leadership in the next legislative session that is going to fight to get to 2/3rds.

I agree. (0.00 / 0)
And from my analysis of open seats in the legislature this fall, it will be extremely difficult to get to 2/3 with us only having a fighting change in CA-19.

My ramblings...

In the words of Emily Litella (8.00 / 1)
"Never mind!"

I hope he's recalled.

The district is already blanketed with ads (6.50 / 2)
And Simón Salinas has already started campaigning. So this may pass after all - Perata's dealmaking could well backfire and cause voters to go for the recall after all.

Way to sandbag Monterey County twice, Don! Thanks!

Wow. (6.50 / 2)
Just...wow.

First Perata cuts a deal with Abel Maldonado - voila, no Democratic candidate in SD-15 despite the Democratic registration majority. That was bad enough.

Now Perata "calls off" the recall (which of course he has no legal right to do) because he cut a "deal" with Dave Cogdill? The same Dave Cogdill who just yesterday reiterated his "no new taxes" pledge? After having convinced Simón Salinas to stick his neck out and run for the seat?

Words fail me. This is fucked up beyond all measure. Too bad we can't move up the date of Darrell Steinberg's ascension to the Senate leadership. California can't take any more of Perata's dealmaking.

Disappointment (8.00 / 1)
I hate seeing this.  I know it's hard as hell to turn over a State Senate seat and this was one of our best opportunities.

There is one possible defense for Perata: if someone survives a recall, they become much stronger.  It is possible that Perata saw the numbers and decided that it just wasn't possible.  Better to get something now for pulling the plug than to let Denham strengthen.

Unless that is the reason, Perata is a putz (did I spell that right?) and I can't wait for him to leave.

2/3 (6.50 / 2)
I should have mentioned - this now makes it impossible to get 2/3 in the State Senate. We can pick up SD-19 (Hannah-Beth Jackson) but without SD-12 or SD-15 we will remain one vote short. And anyone who thinks a deal with Republicans is worth a damn is nuts - let alone thinking such a deal can last two more years.

The recall is quite winnable. It will be a low turnout election and Simón Salinas can turn out Latino voters in the Salinas Valley to push this over the top. Besides, so what if Denham survives a recall vote? He's termed out in 2010 anyway.

Stuff like this makes me very happy that Prop 93 failed. Sorry Brian, but we needed to be rid of Perata before we go about reforming term limits.

Denham's not running for the St. Senate again (8.00 / 1)
the entire reason he's shifted to the right is because he wants to run for Lt. Governor.  So I suppose you "strengthen" him for a run at statewide office, but I hardly think that means he'd beat whoever we'd put up for the seat, and indeed a "strengthened" Denham would be emboldened to abandon the seat and open it up for 2010.  So this is stupid all around.

[ Parent ]
with leadership like this (8.00 / 1)
who needs republicans? they could get rid of the 2/3 rule, and they'd still hand the keys to the republicans, just like they did with schwarzeneggar, twice.

pathetic.
