El Gran Carryover
2:31 pm: Eight minutes to post for race four, first leg of the pick-six with a $1,186,625 carryover from Belmont Stakes Day courtesy of Da' Tara.
My tickets are in, a little under $2k worth, on what I found to be a skullbuster of a card, one better suited to some $1 pick-3 and pick-4 plays trying to catch bombs in one tough race after another than to nailing six in a row. The sheer size of the pool compels me to play anyway and take my best shot, just in case it's easier than it looks. A caveman ticket using all my A's B's and C's would have run a little more than $46k, so I mixed and matched on seven tickets -- an $1152 main and six smaller single-backup tickets.
Ninety percent of my play involves one of the two favorites winning the first leg. Here's hoping, and good luck to all.
2:50 pm: Second choice My Dinah($6.90) kept the whole world alive for at least one leg, running down 7-5 Love Co in upper stretch and drawing away from 33-1 Aly's Colors. Love Co blazed the first quarter in a crazy 22.52 under Prado, opening a six-length lead that dissipated quickly around the turn, and the final quarter of the race was run in 29.09 (that's not a typo) for a mile in 1:41.57. My Dinah, a half-sister to turf stakes-winner Them There Eyes, is now 3-for-4 on dirt, 0-for-3 on grass.
NYRA's announcing a gross pool of $4.4 million, meaning we all put in about $3.2 million today. Guess the Belmont didn't sour everyone on the game.
3:30 pm: Youbethecan ($21.00), trained by some guy named Rick Dutrow, blew past the field through the stretch to win Leg 2 as the 5th choice in a field of 12. Good news: I used him. Bad news: Only as a "C," so I'm down to one live ticket that singles favorite Dancing Tin Man in the next leg: 8/4,5,9/5,7,8,9/7,8.
Youbethecan ran a dull 5th as the 2-1 favorite in the April 23 version of this $35k N2L grass claimer, then was freshened up by Dutrow during the three editions of the race during May that produced most of the rest of this field. I know the horse's name is pronounced "You Bet He Can" but for some reason I always read it as "You Be The Can."
Let's go Dancing Tin Man.
3:59 pm: Can you say Three Million Dollar Carryover? We could all be saying that in about an hour and a half, after Willsboro Point won Leg 3 at $47.80 , completing a $1937 pick-3 for the first half of the pick-six.
Willsboro Point was hard to like unless you favor pedigree over past performance. He might have been the best-bred colt in the field, out of the multiple turf stakes-winner Petrouchka, but he was coming out of a very slow and slow-paced front-running victory against weaker, where he was claimed by Scott Schwartz from Roy Lerman. That was the race much of the field in the 5th race was coming out of, and all of them ran poorly.
I have no idea why Dancing Tin Man was dead last and in a race of his own far behind all nine of his opponents. Belatedly cut loose, he was running over horses but managed only to get fourth. Oh well.
4:30 pm: Myakka dimmed hopes for a Gargantuan double-carryover py proving best as the 8-5 favorite in Leg 4, surviving an early mild (45.12) duel with Classic Love before pulling away to win this statebred turf sprint in 1:08.86. Second to Lost Without You in her turf debut in the May 26 version of this race, Myakka looked best on paper but I couldn't emphasize her more strongly because it looked like there were six one-way speeds in the race and thus a potential meltdown.
I know the parlay's under $5k through four legs but Willsboro Point was so tough that I still think we could have a carry if anything goofy happens in the last two legs.
Let's go goofy!
5:02 pm: Pennington was insufficiently goofy at $9.20, so eight of the nine horses are covered in the finale. Unless you're alive for something you're probably rooting for #4, Say Karakorm Sandy, the only one who can deliver a $3 million carry. The will-pays, posted above, range from 29 live tickets to favored Ten Forty to just two at $1.49 million to Mackinaw. I guess I'm rooting for either a carryover with SKS or one stinking conso with either Newmont or Estimator, which might get me my money back if they pay around half a percent of the $499.405 or $334,050 top prizes.
5:28 pm: Ten Forty, whose charms I clearly did not appreciate since he was only a "B" in my book, galloped at 4-5 in the finale to enrich 29 sages to the tune of $103,754 apiece. No conso, no carryover, but just wait until next time.

Thanks for doing another play by play, I think they are great. I thought the Pick 6 was crazy hard so I only sent in a minnow.
Good Luck,

didn't see you with love co so probably won't matter to you much but it just drives me crazy when a jock with lone speed goes out and runs an absolutely foolish open and burn his chances in the end. I've got no dog in this fight(the pk 6) but you hope for a competent ride no matter what when you put down your 2 bucks.
On a separate issue, how does these last two mile races get rated? Clearly the 2nd race had quicker fractions but they absolutely crawled home in 28 plus seconds. Will the speed figures reflect that races seem to be over a "slow" track?

I'm going to assume that Love Co was unrateable and that Prado isn't that dumb. Otherwise, he could have waltzed around the track as the only speed and won for fun.
I didn't pick youbethecan but he was the horse off his races last year. He ran with Equitable and Stalingrad and won a nice grass race. Who knows why he ran so poorly in his two races this year. I guess the freshening did the job.

Tin Man shook loose way too late to keep you alive. Just watching the race this horse looked like an absolute beast getting the trip in behind the 1 horse and when he found daylight just blew the field away. I would suspect that he took quite a bit of players with him and the back to back combo knocked out a great deal of bounty hunters.

i did like the dutrow 7 horse at 9-1 and also singled the 2 in the first leg.. spent only $208 and would never have used willsboro so all in all not too bad...
i wish i had the 1 in the last race, he was my last toss and could mean the difference in getting 5 of 6.

Oh, well, as Maxwell Smart would say, "would you believe a THREE-million dollar carryover?"
Last - hopefully - thoughts on The Big Brown Out.
In the flurry of initial reactions to the event, "Babes" sent in a great comic take-off of Dutrow - who uses the word "babes" in every sentence - with the fictional Dutrow explaining how, if you nob the Belmont Stakes favorite & box the remaining horses, you can't fail to make a profit.
Although it is almost impossible to believe that Dutrow & Company would have actually done this, the revelations in the past four weeks about IEAH's Iavarone's previous transgressions - & Dutrow's mouth and his past record of numerous suspensions - has made it impossible to consider this possibility as an impossibility.
* * * * *
A day after the water pressure dropped and the blood pressures soared, I looked at the racing bulletin board, at a photo I'd almost forgotten was was there.
It's Calvin Borel, holding his helmet in the air with both hands, saluting the fans and crying with joy, after coming back to the grandstands having just won the 2007 Kentucky Derby. If I'm not mistaken, it was only his 2nd Grade One victory in a riding career in a quarter- century. Everyone was no-holds-barred, wildly ecstatic that he had finally made it.
A year later, that joy has been replaced by suspicion, blame, antagonism, paranoia, and self-indulgent (& self-interested) criticisms - just about every ugly, disagreeable mood, sound and sensation imaginable.
I hope we never, EVER have another Triple Crown like the one witnessed in 2008.

Anybody with an inkling of pedigree knowledge knew that Petrouchka loved the lawn....
Race 6: Check Willsboro Point's breeding line. It says the doctors names "& The Tho"...is that short for The Thoroughbred Corporation, of the late Prince Ahmed Salman's former powerhouse stable? His dam was a graded stakes winner in Canada and believe this one will excel on turf. He was beat by a huge longshot on a loose lead at Tampa on 13Apr, and he himself got an easy lead last out. Figures to get a similar trip today with many late-running types.
Race 7: With Zip by You and Myakka in the race, this turf sprint is guaranteed a hot pace. In fact, what other options does Cornelio have but to send this confirmed speedball out of the gate? She scorched 'em at Saratoga and goes just as fast on the lawn. Chop Chop takes over Mia (note maiden near-win) and just has to sit back and make one run. Needed the race back and 2nd off layoff means if Leah has her ready, this one could knock a lot of p6 players out...needs a clean run. Huge price for the win, but a must-use in exotics...

BPM,
The "media" that you mention is not the mainstream "media", just the horse racing media. The horse racing media is so small a fraction of the overall "media", that drug use in horse racing, is still under the radar as far as the main stream media is concerned. I do, however, think the Belmont went a little ways towards the heavy drug usage of these horses ( ilegal and legal ) being leaked into the mainstream press. Just my observation.
I also agree that if the mainstream media ( or even the mainstream SPORTS media ) gave a rats, you know what, about horse racing, they would be all over this disgusting situation that we have in horse racing with drugs and performance enhancers.
You are right in that the horse racing media does very little to get the message out. One might think, the reporters that cover this wonderful sport and who cared about its well being, would do what is right. If they made enough noise, eventually, someone in the "main" would attack this story. It would probably hurt the reputation of horse racing ( which was funny just writing that, as we all know the "rep" horse racing has ) but, in the long run would go 10 fold towards making our beloved sport "mainstream" ( just think of the fans that could be brought into this sport if it was like it once was).
If horses ran 3 or 4 years ( through their 5 and 6 year old season ) or more, the rivalries would be tremendous. Old and new fans alike would have a chance to "grab" hold of a horse through a career of 20+ races. Horses that you can "fall" for and watch through several seasons of racing, are what draws new fans and keeps the old ones from leaving. As one of your favs is retiring, you have 6 or 8 more underneath, that you have been following ( a continuous cycle of "crush" horses).
Instead, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place (wanting to "fall" for these great warriors ), but holding our collective breaths after every Breeders Cup, waiting for the hammer to fall on all the "stars" of the season that will be heading off for the breeding shed. As it is now, a trainer ( not all, but enough ) can "milk" a very talented, but unsound, horse through a season of spectacular victories. Then, it is off too the breeders shed to dilute the breed even more ( just too damn lucrative ). Thanks, but, no thanks, it is a putrid practice.
If it took 10 years to get this breed on the right track back to being even close, to what it once was, ( if everyone started doing the right thing now ) we'd be lucky. I'm afraid the evolution is already to far gone for any reasonable change too be seen in my life time. That saddens me deeply.
It is my firm belief that the drug infested industry has plaqued our breeding sheds for far too many years and it is a main factor for where the breed is today ( of course their are many factors that have caused, in my estimation, an inferior breed to what our grandfathers produced).
With the way our country is fed up with steroids and HGH in our pro athletes ( I think if the right reporter really went after this story and got it to the mainstream press ), a few sparks could get a fire going. We got one good spark from the Belmont and the publicity it garnered nationally. Now it is up to someone with some clout ( or a few ) to take the ball and run with it.
Strike while the iron is hot. Now!

For those who aren't aware, the Twin Spires players pool went with a caveman ticket (5x7x4x7x8x3) to the tune of $47k and a couple smaller backups to even the bets out at $50k. I got a cheap thrill for my $40 contribution (the total cashed was barely $1000 for the 4 consols.), but jeez, Steve, I wish the Brisnet Boys would incorporate more of your style on Pick 6's. I'd rather see the $50k spread out onto 10-20 different tickets while keying on a couple "A's and B's" throughout. I've never had a bankroll to play Pick 6's, but I've hit most of my signers in Pick 4's and Pick 3's by spreading out my bets more using the key system rather than caveman plays.

GF was a bar & restaurant. And of course, its proximity to the filthy, Formica & plexiglass jungle next door attracted its bettors as customers.
One night in the late 80s, a man came in who, @ 15 year earlier, had moved out to California. Fortunately, some of his old friends were there that night, so he felt right at home, again.
Someone came in from next door & slammed his bet book down, hard, on the bar.
"Norrie! I asked that damn clerk to give me a front-&-backwheel on the 'B' - not the 'C' - horse! And then the 'B' won! "
The Californian stared at him in near-absolute horror.
"They STILL have that INSANE number-letter system?!?!?!"

Do you think it would be advantageous to print whether or not a horse is on steroids in the DRF? Like they do with Lasix?
I think the public deserves to know who is using and who isnt, especially since the cost of this paper is now $5.50, which isnt exactly chump change.
It should be part of the handicapping information, just as important as comments from the last horse's race and how much weight a horse is carrying.
Suggestion: you could indicate a horse is on steroids by showing a little picture of a man holding a syringe.

Dear Steve, Wasn't Willsboro Point claimed out of his last race? For me this kind of horse is an automactic throw-in, especially if I'm trying to get a price. To my friend BOCHALLS, you said the pick 6 is a SUCKERS bet, I disagree, what makes it a SUCKERS bet is that Managment at most major Racetracks is made up primarily of "the STUPID son's of sucessful fathers" who delibertly place these races to attract the most money possible. This has always been a Rich Man's game and always will be.Pick6 money is the hardest money to recoup. Managment doesn't care that it BLEEDS the little guy to death, they don't care that this great game CONTINUES to decline in handle and attendence year after year. I've asked managment to card a pick-6 that is comprised of 6 races that contain Horses with form, just once a week. How many player's out there have had over and over 4 out of 6 or 5 out of 6, just to be blown out by a 14 horse field of Maidens or maiden claimer's. So the guy that's a good Handicapper is now asked to guess or COVER 14 horses... Managment turns a THINKING man's game into a four legged lottery.... Managment doesn't understand the pulse of the horseplayers they have run a full time catering service to the wealthy. Million dollar races are a dime a dozen, and this has done NOTHING to attract new business. If race track managment took over McDonald's Corp the first they would do is,SELL HOT DOGS ONLY .. As far as the group of talking heads at T.V.G.they "couldn't pick their own mother out of a room full of BABOONS" I'm sure Steve would tell you learn to pick your own horses and play the pick 6 with 'their" money, untill managment gives the little guy a fair shot.If you have a Big day keep that money and put in a Big Fat ticket just like the rich man's STUPID son's want you to....

Steve,
Just want to say that you really did a service when penning your observations about how the armchair jockeys got it wrong.
The ride on Big Brown was relatively insignificant, and three cheers to the steward Mr. Hill who felt the same way upon reviewing the film with Kent D.
Taking that a step further (years too late) I'd also opine that Stewart Elliot did NOT give Smarty Jones a "bad ride" in his Belmont either:
That Belmont Stakes shaped up a lot like the Iraq war, where had you been able to see the end (or, uh, well, the later stages {???} ) from the beginning, you might have done it differently, but when critiqued on a frame-by-frame cause-and-effect basis, the chess matches in either case more clearly vindicate the respective "jockeys" involved.
Ultimately, Saddam controlled his own fate, Big Brown's problems certainly weren't the ride, and Smarty Jones was just unfortunate.
Anyway, great points you made in that story.

The NYRA P6 pool is not seeded on non-carryover days; instead, the takeout is 15 rather than the usual 25 percent as an incentive to play without a carry.
Tim,
There is no way DRF could publish which horses have been treated with steroids because that information is not required to be reported. Steroids are currently legal in most jurisdictions, though I think that will change over the next year. Currently, we could no more list which horses are getting them than we could say which horses are given peppermints.

Steve, what do you think about a mandatory pick 6 payout on Belmont Stakes day? It seems a little unfair that 95,000 people, most of which won't be back at least right away, get to contribute with no chance to collect if there is a carryover. To me, this would eliminate the need for a "guarantee" because the thought of a pick six payout on as little as 4 of 6, will stimulate at least as much action. Basically no different than NYRA does on each one of it's meets closing days.

1) Thanks Steve. Still dont understand why Lasix is published, thats legal too, no? So because steroids are legal, its not required to tell the public? How is it any different in factoring in whether or not a horse has a good chance to win that race than knowing a horse is on Lasix?
2) Steve, I find it hard to believe you left out the horse claimed by Scott Schwartz coming off a win no less, but hey next time right?!
3) Sorry about the single I gave you- Love Co. Prado rode this horse into the ground but I doubt it made any difference. My Dinah was tons the best.
4) I think they should only have big carryovers like this on the weekend so more people can enjoy the action. I realize it attracted a large amount of money, but think how much more money and how many more people could have enjoyed the action on a Sat or Sun? It stinks betting ahead and checking the results on the internet at work.
Any 3 or more day carryover should only happen on weekends. What do you think?

Steve, I'm reading your "Exotic Betting" and got to your section on stupid exacta tricks where you point out how the quinella is a really lame bet. It made me wonder if this might be a pool where a slightly more sophisticated handicapper could have an advantage.

Steve (anyone) - thought it was interesting (and sad) that after 2nd race on Belmont card that Inquiry sign didn't go up. Thought it was even stranger that Garcia didn't claim foul - chart says chked hard and lost several lengths. Bailey/Moss then reported that Garcia was angry that there was no outrider to report his claim and race was official by the time he got back. Bailey was shocked that they didn't look at it. Sport doesn't need press like this - wake up Stewards and protect your fans!

BB and the Starter ..
Kent Desormeaux has added another theory to the growing mystery over what stopped Big Brown in Saturday's Belmont Stakes.
The colt's jockey believes that the official starter, Roy Robert Williamson, was unintentionally responsible. Desormeaux said as much Wednesday in a meeting with stewards but did so publicly Thursday.
Williamson was standing on the track a few feet off the rail, and Desormeaux thinks that distraction may have cost Big Brown the Triple Crown.
"He leaves there like a quarter horse all the time, but this time he left and made a sharp right," Desormeaux said of Big Brown.
"Most of the time the starter leans on the fence, not a few feet off. What troubles me most is that the starter didn't stand there like a statue. One thing is to be there, but to push the button and then start to walk away.
"I mean he's got bright white pants on and a dark jacket. He stands out like a sore thumb.
(It could clarify many issues if BB is allowed to compete in the Travers and then he BC ..... else????)

The BB saga is beginning to look a lot like the JFK murder and all the conspiracy theories that grew like weeds and still show their ugly blossoms from time to time. Let's face it folks. BB lost the race. Only he knows exactly why and unless they hire a horse whisperer to interview him and get to the facts, I suggest we move on to the next phase. The theory that the starter did it is intriguing but like a lot of other sugestions it is absurd.
Movin' on. Ray

Desormeaux rode horribly in the Belmont, but I have noticed the starter in NY seems to stand oddly close to the start of the race. He needs to get out of the way! No one wants to see him, especially young horses bursting out of the gate for the first time.

who else thinks this whole NYOTB bloomberg/bankruptcy thing is a disgrace...they (Bloomberg and crew) don't count the surcharge since that would have made the bottom line net positive, yet they want ny state to take over the operation, incur the expenses, guarantee a profit (at a 1% increase in takeout cost to the bettors) AND they (Bloomberg and crew) don't want to give up the surcharge...can't have your cake and eat it too....or can you????
