Raspberry Jam

Making Jams at home gives me deep satisfaction. The absence of lots of preservatives, pectin and unwanted sugar sort of makes up for the few min of hard work in the kitchen. The fact that I know exactly what goes into my mouth every morning gives me an utter relief.

I have been making Jams for a while now and my last supply of strawberry Jam got over yday. So time to make some more I thought. Happened to see some v fresh raspeberries in the market and jus knew what to make out of them.

Ingredients

  • about 3 cups raspberries

  • 1 - 1 1/4 cup brown sugar ( I am quite happy with 1 cup but if you like it sweeter 1/4 - 1/2 cup extra)

  • 3-4 oranges

  • Juice of one lemon

Method

1.Place the fresh Raspberries in a saucepan in low heat.

2.Meanwhile preheat the oven to 240F and spread out the brown sugar in a pan and heat for 5-10min. Warm sugar dissolves much quickly.

3.Squeeze the oranges to make 1 - 1/4 cup of orange juice.

4.Add the lemon and orange juice along with the berries and increase the flame to high. Mash the berries with a potato masher.

5.Keep heating till it comes to a boil about a min and add the sugar.

6.Keep striing occasionally and keep on med-high heat till it gets to a gel like consistancy - about 20-30min. The Jam is done when the the juice is v thick when you dip a metal spoon in the fruit and lift to see a thick not-runny consistancy.

7.Store it in your fridge in an air tight bottle and njoy with your bread.

I really must make my own jam at some point. My mom used to make the most amazing jam. The store bought variety simply does not compare. This recipe sounds like a winner and as usual, your pictures are just lovely.

looks delcious - reminds me that jam is such a great way to preserve raspberries and keep on enjoying their wonderful flavour and colour - I just wish they were still in season here and I would probably run out and make some!

Nice entry to Putting it Up - I especially love that you use so much less sugar. The sugar content is what always stopped me from making my own but this I can handle. Tagged. Love it.

Hi Jaya, No its not necc to add brown sugar. U can use White. I se brown for healthier reasons :)

Hi Arundati, Thanks :) and yes this works with strawberry too although I am not sure abt grapes not having tried one myself. But when I do, i will surely update :)
