Oil Sticker Shock

30th May 2008

DH and I had a wonderful trip to the grocery store the other day, and I had many things on my list.  Imagine my surprise, when I had a look at the oil - OLIVE OIL!  It was $9.12 for a quart and something.  I thought I was going to throw up, especially since we use olive oil in a lot of things now, and everyone knows olive oil is wonderfully healthful for you.  Now, what is a girl to do?

Where are some cheap sources of olive oil?  What type of oil do you use in your recipes?  What’s the highest-priced thing on your grocery list?

Olive oil is one of those ingredients that I always feel is worth spending the money on…but I also always buy it at Marshalls or TJ Maxx because they have really high quality oils at a deep discount on what you’d find at the super market. If I’m going to spend $9 on a bottle of olive oil, I like knowing it originally would have cost $18-25 :0) makes it a bit more palatable.

We use olive oil for everything. We try to buy it at BJ’s when they offer one of their coupons coupled with a manufacturers coupon.

While it may not be the highest priced each week on our list, soy milk is the most common high priced item we buy. My oldest son is allergic to milk, so he drinks silk soy milk. My wife and I actually switched over to drinking it as well. We typically spend about $5 per week to buy two half gallons and look for coupons whenever we can.

As a side note - we try to eat healthy whenever we can. At times we are forced to eat healthier because of our children’s allergies. I find it very frustrating that eating healthier costs a lot more money. What is your take on that?

Check out Trader Joe’s. I usually buy mine there and it’s pretty cheap…

@Lauren - We use a lot of olive oil in everything. I’ll have to check out prices at those places and maybe buy in bulk.

@PFI - coupons on coupons? You’re my idol! I’ll write an article tomorrow about eating healthier vs. saving money and my take.

@SD - Trader Joe’s is my FAVORITE! I miss California!

Big Lots for all your condiment, oil, beverage, snack, and processed food needs.
