Walk with me!-Top 10 Most Walkable US Citites

Posted by Debo Hobo under: Travel-General .

My son is engaged and set to be married sometime next year. No date set yet. I could not be more excited, my future daughter-in-law and a fantastic young lady. The only thing I am dreading is the family photo. These are going to be picture of a lifetime! So in an effort to make sure I am at my most photogenic physique I have embarked on a newly formatted and much more rigorous workout regimen in conjunction with a dietary change. I refuse to get saddles with wearing the dowdy Mother-in-Law dress and if I do at least I’ll be able to make it look good.
walking-shoes.jpgPart of my routine is to walk 10 Thousand Steps a day. That means rather than calling or emailing a co-worker I walk over to their office, rather than finding the closest spot in the lot, I park farther out and walk to the store. As Dr. Oz say “Why sit when you can stand, why stand when you can walk, why walk when you can run?”

I am currently at 9 Thousand Steps per day with half of those adding up after work when I go and walk around the golf course; that’s right around I don’t play golf. It is pretty much the only place I can walk unless I get in the car and drive to a park or something. I am flanked by highways and I rather not stroll on those. So, I got to wondering what it would be like to take leisurely walks in other cities and which cities are the best ones to do this.

Seattle is #22, and I think it’s a great place to walk. Lots of trails, especially if you are a hiker (I’ve not been in the past, but I’m going to be soon), but lots of sidewalks and parks. In the summer, one of my neighbors walks to work (5 miles one way), and she’s in great shape! For exercise, I walk 6 blocks to a super fruit and vegetable stand, then walk home with my healthy treasures.

I was going to move to Oklahoma City, which ranks #100. I’ve put my move off, but not for that reason! Great post, Debo!

That’s such a great routine. Is a great exercise to just walk around daily. Tell you the truth, I tend to daydream even when I walk, can be scary sometimes!

I don’t know if I can say that Boston is walkable. I personally call it forcibly walkable.
You really do not have a choice. You either walk or get stuck in traffic in one way roads at every turn.
So in terms of walking because you have to ,I’d rank Boston right at the top of the list. As for the health part, the amount of car exhaust just makes that redundant doesn’t it?

Hi tony rich first of all welcome to my blog and thank you for commenting. It is funny you mention Boston I was watching a video on ProfitJuice and they mentioned that the roads in Boston were actually the paved over routes left from the cows in the 1600s. The people just paved over the warn down areas left by the cows and that is why the streets seem so half hazzard.

I am from New England(CT) originally so I know it is a wonderful walking area. Forced or no.

What a great post! Walking is so good for the mind and spirit. It actually gives us the time to reflect on the good things in our lives. Good food and healthy fitness is the best you can do for yourself! Thanks for some super info. I will make sure to mention it in my blog. Always, Sara
