im not sure why the thumbs down but this very same deal made homepage over at another deal site. add in the 3% fw kickback and it's pretty sweet for a Dell studio 15". only downside is the wireless is Dell-branded instead of intel.

yeah, my bf just bought me the Studio series laptop for my birthday, i'm using it now and i love this laptop. the one they're selling is slightly faster though with twice as much hard drive space... and i think he paid more too. =T so this is a good deal imo. Does anyone know Dell's policy, do they do price match or something??

Definitely call them if the purchase was within the last 2 or 3 weeks. At worst they'll say no, but in many cases they will give you some sort of refund

This is a fairly warm deal on a nice laptop. It is better then the inspirons and slightly less fancy then the XPS.

I've got a Dell Dimension 8250 desktop and am looking to buy my first laptop for voice over audio recording, light video editing, some Photoshop and CS3 use, web browsing, etc.

I was seriously looking at MacBooks but for 1/2 the price I figure I can get a good PC laptop. I'm not really familiar with Vista but have heard enough bad things about it to go with a laptop that can support XP. I'd like to keep the weight down so I'm leaning towards a 15" laptop.

I'm leaning towards Dell because of how surprised and happy I was going from home-built machines (486s and Pentiums) to Dell's support and the easy access to all of the peripherals inside.

Is Dell still one of the better brands? Any others you recommend?

Also, any web sites that I should check out that might help determine processor, graphics card, etc.?

Dell and HP are good choices. This laptop would be fine for what you are talking about though I would get an external lcd for home use for using with photoshop. I would also go for the 1400*900 screen option.

That's a pretty good deal. If you buy it on eBay, it'll be less than 600 bucks if you include the CashBack and 10% coupon.

i think u should cancel the order because new montevia CPUs and motherboards were just released on 7-14, so expect the prices of these "old" laptops to decrease even more in the upcoming weeks.

Definitely try and use Vista for a whole before you junk it. A lot of the negative press came when Vista was first released and people were buying low end computers that couldn't handle Vista very well. For the most part Vista runs fine and in some cases performs better than XP but a lot of people still have a tendency to shun Vista because of the negative press and that attitude still continues today.

Vista's problems only started with performance issues. Windows 2009 (or whatever they are already talking about) next up!!!

If you don't mind I'd like to see how you came up with those numbers. The cheapest buy it now is $795 + $20 shipping. I can see getting close to $700 but not under $600.

Thanks,
Dave

600 is not quite likely. I saw sb selling it at $1000+30, or $680 after live search Cash Back and 10% coupon. The coupon is not for everyone, so it's possible you need to pay $780.

If you buy direct from Dell, you may also get 3% off DPA and 3% FatCash, bring it down to around $710, plus tax.

This is a brand new model. Dell may put in the newer chips at a higher cost - but they sure as heck aren't slashing the prices or clearancing them.
