Ellen announces plans to get married

In the wake of the California Supreme Court's decision to overturn the state's same sex marriage ban, Ellen DeGeneres announced her plans to wed girlfriend and actress Portia de Rossi on her television show yesterday.

She received a standing ovation from her audience.

Thanks to Think Progress for the vid!

mmmm, Ellen has good taste. Portia is gorgeous, and she was funny as hell on both Ally McBeil and even more funny on Arrested Development.

Ellen is super funny too. Too bad they can't procreate together, they would probably have really smart and funny kids.

This is great news. I think I'm most inspired by the standing ovation from her audience. It's so nice to see a group of people embrace gay marriage. Especially since those who feel threatened by gay marriage are so damn vocal about it.

All I have to say is YAY!!!!! I have quite a few friends in CA right now doing celebratory dance after celebratory dance.

I just can't stop smiling about this -- I mean, not just about Ellen, about the decision. I live in the Castro district in San Francisco, one block away from the giant rainbow flag, and when I got home from work yesterday, they had actually closed down the street for a huge street party/rally because of this decision. It was incredible! Hundreds and hundreds gathered to cheer and party and celebrate equality!

I'm not gay, and therefore not really part of the gay community, but I can tell you that I have never felt such a community spirit from any of the places I've every lived. I damn near cried when two of my gay friends -- who are going out to buy rings to get married next month after 11 years together -- held my hands and said "we are part of history today".

I love not only that this happened, but that Ellen, a hugely popular daytime host, can announce her marriage to her girlfriend and get this kind of applause. The nation isn't perfect, but each accomplishment is so important, whether it be legislative or social.

And Ellen is the most appealing woman ever -- I think me and my (male) partner both have a thing for her.

I had heard all about this and her cute little statement at the end about registering at Crate and Barrel but I hadn't watched yet.

Just watching this I started crying at my desk. What a wonderful wonderful moment. Long time coming. A lot of work left to do, but we'll get there--let's enjoy the moment, shall we?

This cute, blonde, funny, mainstream-approved, pleasant couple is clearly destroying America.

I love this so much. Words cannot express my love. Now if only the rest of the states would follow suit...

As a married woman, this certainly makes me re-think my previous position NOT to go to grad school in the States. Which is largely due to the growth of the Christian Right, before I get yelled at!
Seeing as this is Friday and all, let's raise our glasses to human rights...

Just to remove ANY possibility of misunderstanding, this makes me reconsider the US and my dislike about how the Religious Right has been taking over.
Marriage, or at least Civil Partnerships, to me is a vital and basic human right - on so many levels - in terms of economics, recognition, identity, etc.
My respect goes to CA on this issue.
and now, back to those drinks!
Have a good weekend everyone!

Forgive me for raining on your heteronormative parade, but ellen is an asshole.

what has she done with all her power and money to advance the cause of queer liberation- or even the cause of gay marriage (which are not the same thing)?

i once wrote a nasty letter to her show because she had a syrupy sweet valentines day show with cute couples that have been together and stayed happy (happily married that is). All were straight, and all but two people were white. Way to represent, ellen. It's not like your sexual orientation is a secret, so there's nothing to lose. Except that she might be perceived as 'too gay'.

and her original show didn't get cancelled because she came out- it was because after she came out, the show started to suck for some reason.

don't get me wrong, her stand up is some of the funniest shit i have seen. but she is now a complete and total sellout. and i just can't congratulate her for wanting to increase her own personal level of privilege while not doing anything to help the cause.

I'm sorry hotpinko, but Ellen has done more for the gay cause than almost anyone else. By being open and not ashamed of her orientation, and by being hugely funny and main-stream, she does ten times more for the acceptance of homosexuality in main-stream America than any gay pride parade. Every day her show is on and people see her being just the most charming and normal person there is, less people are going to hate gay people in general.

If she was a complete and utter sell-out, she'd be damn careful to not mention anything about her orientation or girl-friend on her show, something which she does with regularity. Just look at this clip, she announced her plans to get married, and she had her girlfriend right there in the audience? Could you imagine this happening ten years ago? To a main-stream female talk-show host? No, you couldn't, because ten years ago it wouldn't have happened, and a lot of the reason why it can happen today is because of Ellen.

And what kind of person are you who can't congratulate a person for marrying the person she loves? Regardless of her level of activity in the gay community, why can't you just be happy for her?

Honestly, I love Ellen. As some people have already said, the fact that there is a gay main-stream talk-show host, who isn't defined by her sexuality but isn't ashamed of it, is one of the most positive signs of development in America. It's wonderful that now she gets to marry Portia. My love goes out to both of them.

I don't frequently watch her show, but I know she has championed gay causes--such as the "I'm not a second-class citizen" thing from a few months ago. And I agree with what Oskar said--just by virtue of being open about who she is she is advancing the cause for gay rights.

What worries me is 1) the conservatives screaming "judicial activism" (as if horrible rulings made in their favor aren't) and 2) the initiative they're trying to get on the ballot in November that would amend the California constitution to state marriage is between a man and a woman. Because Ellen and Portia filling out a joint tax return will make all these heterosexual marriages just crumble into dust. [/sarcasm]

HOORAY!
I love Ellen and Portia!
SOOO good!!!

this video made me cry!

Lots of X's and O's to the Cali supreme Court!

They make such a cute couple. Congratulations to Ellen & Portia and all of California!
