NFL Footballderdash: Wild Card Weekend
January 4, 2008 by Lee

Footballderdash is a look at a few games from the week that we did at our previous home at TINO Sports Page. We ran it all season and tied with a 30-23 record each. It’s playoff time now, Baby! The gloves come off and there will be no pity picks. We will cover all the games during the playoffs, starting now.

Winning the NFC West has not been a great feat this season given the competition. With the drop in Shaun Alexander’s studness, Matt Hasselbeck has carried the load. He didn’t throw 50 TD’s so you might not be aware that Hass has had a career year in 2007. The Redskins are one of the hotter teams right now going into the playoffs. Run, run, run, with Portis and open up the play action pass for Todd Collins. Collins has been surprisingly composed and effective since coming off that long stint on the bench. As much as I would like to see it play out differently, the mojo of #21 is going to come to an end this week.
Lee: Seattle Seahawks
Redskins are the hottest team in the playoffs… yada yada yada. The Seahawks are the better team, are playing at home and have experience. That is why they win this game. Shaun Alexander returns finally and shows why he was the MVP a few seasons ago and Deion Branch has a nice game to balance the attack. The Redskins just don’t scare me much, especially compared to the Seahawks.

It was only three weeks ago when the Jags put up 216 yards on the ground against the Steelers. Don’t think the Steelers have forgotten that. Look for the Steelers defense to be pissed and looking to redeem themselves. Willie Parker is gone but Davenport has been doing well carrying the ball. The passing game for the Steelers has been un-Steelers like and could be a huge factor in this game, The Jaguars are a scary team right now. They are hot and have shown they are not afraid of anyone. Fred Taylor has logged more yards this seasons then any other since 2004. His 5.4 avg. is a career high. Not bad for a guy sharing the load with one of the more explosive RB’s in Maurice Jones-Drew. It’s hard to pick against the Steelers at home but I just can’t ignore how scary the Jags run is right now.
Lee: Jacksonville Jaguars
I’ve heard from people that the Jaguars are the “trendy” pick in the playoffs. Since when did we play football in Paris? And on a runway? You gotta go with the hard nose style of the Steelers. Missing Willie hurts, but they will pick it up for him. Their D is still one of the best in the league and their offense is more than capable of putting some points on the board. That is all you can ask for from a team in the playoffs. The Jags just don’t have the experience as of yet or the firepower to be able to keep up.

This is a very tough game to call. The Giants put up an honorable performance against the Patriots last weekend while the Buccaneers have been resting for weeks. Jeff Garcia has not tore things up this year but has been a good leader. Garcia to Galloway is a connection that can change a game at any time. The Bucs D has returned to form, 1st against the pass and 2nd for yards. Their weakness appears against the run. The Giants just happen to be ranked 4th in the league on the ground. Brandon Jacobs up the middle all day long baby. Despite the loss last weekend it had to do something for their confidence.
Lee: New York Giants
Eli? In the playoffs? That’s a guaranteed loss, right? WRONG! He’s got it going on this year. Or at least for the first round. TB has been reeling as of late and the GMen can play with anybody when they want to. They will come to play here and put on a show. Their defense is under appreciated and they will show it when they shut down any O that TB tries to get going. The TB D will be put into bad positions because of the offense’s inability to move the ball.

L.T. had a human like sub-1500 season with only 15 TD’s. What an average running back, huh? This game will be on his shoulders and I think he will do just fine. The Chargers have led the league in INT’s and have to be licking their chops for an injured Vince Young. The D is middle of the road as far as league rankings but 5th in points…against a team that doesn’t put up a lot of points. The Titans could not ask for a better time for Vince Young to put on a performance like he did a couple years ago a few miles up the road in the Rose Bowl. Young has that nagging quad injury thing going, yet again. This game will be on the Titans D who has played well this season. Albert Haynesworth is a monster, nuff said. I would love to see the Titans win this game.
Lee: San Diego Chargers
Are you kidding me on this one? Two words for you: Madden Jinx. Everyone is looking for why Vince Young has been playing so badly, it’s all about Madden and the cover. That is the main reason they will lose this game to SD. Well that and SD is 8x the team that they are. The Titans are the one team in the playoffs that I can easily put money down and say that they will not be making it to the Super Bowl. They are just kind of the miscast team, the one that doesn’t have a chance, but they had to put them in just so it would look good. SD by a lot.

The Redskins/Seahawks matchup is all about the ground game. Whoever chalks up the most yardage in the run will come out with the victory. I have to go with the Seahawks.
I kind of think the Jags/Steelers game is going to be pathetic. Both teams didn’t give a rat’s ass about Week 18 and sat everyone. It’s a crapshoot to me whether or not its going to be a payoff or a detriment. Teams in the NFL ride the wave of hotness week in and week out and when you take a one off they could cool down to a simmer. With that said, the Jags will take this one with a depleted Steelers O-line to protect Big Ben.
Defense wins championships and when has Eli come up in a big game in his career? Easy pick - Buccaneers.
The Titans don’t have a chance. The Chargers win big.
Thanks Anthony!
