Montgomery County locked the doors at 13 schools in Germantown this morning after a student reported a man approached him with a weapon at a bus stop and made a threat.
Classes resumed as normal at the schools, in the upper portion of the county, but no incidents were reported, according to school officials and police.
All doors to the buildings were locked, and access was limited, Montgomery schools spokesman Brian Edwards said.
The decision was made after a student at Kings View Middle School in Germantown said a man approached him while he was waiting for a bus and showed him a weapon, said Lucille Baur, a spokeswoman for the county police.
The student said that the man made nonspecific threats that “caused the student to believe the schools may be at risk.”
Police would not identify the type of weapon.
The student told the bus driver, who informed the school, which, in turn, called police. Officers recommended that the schools take the security precautions.
“We take threats like this seriously,” Mr. Edwards said.
Miss Baur said that officers had not located the man who reportedly made the threats.
Along with Kings View, Mr. Edwards said the schools affected were Northwest High School, Seneca Valley High School, Roberto Clemente Middle School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Clopper Mill Elementary, Great Seneca Creek Elementary, S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary, Spark Matsunaga Elementary, Germantown Elementary, Lake Seneca Elementary, Ronald McNair Elementary and Waters Landing Elementary.
