A sudden drop in temperature that turned rain into snow and sleet today abruptly closed area school districts after they opened on time.
Most public school districts — including Anne Arundel, Fairfax, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties — closed about two hours early as temperatures dropped from about 34 degrees to about 30 degrees.
Parents around the region were upset about the early closures, including some in Montgomery County, where schools closed at about 12:30 p.m.
“I don’t think this was really necessary,” said parent Tom Csorpas,whose son, Mark, is a sixth-grader at Rockview Elementary School in Kensington. “This weather isn’t bad enough to close the school.”
Principal Pasty S. Roberson said there were no problems getting the students onto four awaiting buses, then home.
District public schools remained opened.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Advisory through tomorrow.
The winter storm is really two weather systems, one from the Midwest that brought about two inches of snow and a second that is coming up the coast and will be fueled by warm, moist air of the ocean.
That storm is expected to reach the region tonight and coat the region with ice as it collides with the colder temperatures.
Forecasters are predicting a nor’easter than could bring as much as a foot of snow to New England.
