Sony's Kaz Hirai sets ambitious 150 million goal for PS3

Sony head honcho Kaz Hirai read the tea leaves at E3 and saw 150 million PS3's sold by the end of the console's 10-year life cycle.
Does he know something we don't?
By 2016, Sony will have sold 150 million PS3 consoles, Kaz Hirai told the Financial Times today.
The head executive held firm on the company's 10-year life cycle for the console, saying "I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?"
Indeed, but with 12.85 million PS3s sold to date, Sony would have to sell approximately 17,250,000 (Edit, thanks for the catch) PS3s every year until 2016. Hirai said in the FT interview that Sony expects to sell about 10 million PS3s in the remainder of the year.
Hirai was perhaps bolstered by his company's two previous efforts in the console space. The PlayStation 2 has sold more than 140 million units since its launch nine years ago, and the PSOne has sold 102 million units.
Commenters at the NeoGAF forums have already weighed in on the issue in unsurprisingly negative fashion, with one posted going so far as to modify a popular cartoon with Hirai's picture.

HAHA what else can anyone say besides, Is he serious? after 10 years nintendo and M$ will have released 2 more consoles and the PS3 would be covered in dust. But HIGHLY doubtful that the PS3 even hits half that.

And by my calculations, if Sony sold 1,874,998 PS3's every year till 2016 (and including 2016) then that'd put them at 27,848,884 PS3's... not 150 million. I dunno what Gamepro was talking about....

With Sony's continued support of their consoles years after releasing it's successors, it has a very good possibilty of happened. The PS2 almost outsold the 360 recently. At least you can expect to still have good games come out for the PS3 a year after the PS4 comes out instead of like Microsoft and Nintendo dropping support the day their new consoles roll out. What really sucks is that Nintendo said that you can use a Gamecube controller with the Wii but stopped making them as soon as the Wi launched.
