The Hens Importants! Don't Forget When Breeding Gamefowl

By C.I. Bilbie (1982)
Throughout the history of
game
fowl breeding, the importance of the hen has, in the majority of
cases, been overlooked, and in isolated instances, even ignored. It is my own
belief (you may disagree) that any present-day breeder competing in the fierce
competition that exists today ignores the importance of the hen not only at his
own peril, but also at the peril of his fowl’s competitive success and the
successful continuity of his strain of fowl.

How many men throughout the ages, have clamored for a
cock at the pit side
that has won a spectacular fight, to take home for use as their prized brood
cock? The pit cock they desire so highly is “the product” and will not
necessarily be “the producer” in their own brood yards, thus dashing their high
hopes for the future.<div class="feedflare">

Why Have My Chickens Stopped Laying Good?

Birds stop laying suddenly at various times of the year, with no patterns or
warning. In this article, Phillip J. Clauer describes some common reasons for
this....

A. Decreasing day length or insufficient day length

Hens require 14 hours of day length to sustain egg production. Once day length
drops below 12 hours, production will decrease and frequently stop. This happens
naturally from October through to February. To prevent this, provide artificial
light to maintain a constant day length of at least 14 hours per day. One 40
watt light for each 100 square feet of coop is adequate. The lights should be
added in the morning hours so the birds can go to roost as the sun sets. This
prevents birds from being stranded in the dark when lights are turned out during
dark hours. Some small flock owners find it easier to leave the lights on
continuously. This is not a problem as long as you do not use light bulbs over
the 40 watt size. However, the time clock will help lower your electric bill.<div class="feedflare">

"The Breeder" On Ed Garrard Hatch Gamefowl

The Feathered Warrior, July 1999
by Carl Saia aka "The Breeder"

This family is known by many other names, such as Biloxi Hatch, Spangle Hatch, Speck Hatch, Little Ed's, and originally they were called McLean's, by some, including me.

This family, according to Ed, traced back to a spangle McLean Hatch, that was bred and fought by Harold Brown at the old Biloxi Pit. Harold fought this cock, a three time winner, the cock was beaten and looked to be dead. So Harold threw him on the dead pile. Later on Ed walked by, saw the cock was still living, picked him up, took him to the cock house, gave him penicillin tablet. Next morning, the cock could not stand, but he would show against another cock. That evening the cock was standing and trying to crow, so Ed took him home.<div class="feedflare">

The Spangled Hatch Game Fowl Breed - a little history.

The great speckled bird or better known as the Garrard Hatch or whatever you
want to call them, is an old breed of gamefowl that have stood the test of time
and are still winning with an utmost high percentage today. These fowl have a
long history of great breeding behind them,
Billy Ruble who was
a famous man for his power
Hatch cocks, Harold
Brown had these Hatch cocks that he and Curtis Blackwell got direct from
Ted McLean. Harold
let Billy have these cocks; the ones they liked best were getting old. Billy
bought the old cock and bred them brother and sister, which came out spangled.
Harold Brown and Billy Ruble did not want spangled chickens so Ed Garrard got
the spangled fowl from Harold Brown. These were strictly POWER cocks.<div class="feedflare">

Breeding Gamefowl in the province of Negros

Bacolod City -- Why did the chicken cross the street?

Certainly not to be roasted, not yet anyway, but to seek perhaps its own arena and fight the way of the ancient gladiators-- as good bred cocks are meant to be. And even as this is frowned upon by some, its association with Filipino culture has given the gamefowl industry an anchor to assert itself as a legitimate industry. Thus, from its pre-Spanish beginnings, this "other chicken industry" had now grown beyond the backyard into a fully developed multi-billion peso business.<div class="feedflare">

&nbsp;
In starting the
history of the &quot;Chocolate Greys&quot; I realize in advance there will be naysayers.
Be that as it may, I shall go forth with this endeavor.

I have in my possession, letters from late Henry (Harry) Parr, giving his
interpretation of their breeding. I also have in my possession the breeding
(C.C. Cooke) of the most knowledgeable person of all concerning the E.W. Law
Chocolate fowl. That person being Martin Odom.

Mr.Odom was born in Corona, Cali., Jan 12 1906, parents Odom, W.L. and Ruth
(Cleveland); married Emma (Peter); children, Joan Odom Long, Dr. Joel M. Odom;
business, ranching, graduated Southeastern State college, A.B, positions held,
teacher, 1930-1964; McIntosh county superintendent of schools, 1939-1941;
religion, Baptist; organizations, Lions, Member of House of representatives,
27th through 30th legislature, 1969-1965. In his later years he would be brought

The Cycle

By Paul Ronole

Very few feeders or cockfighters seem to know or understand the natural cycles
of a gamecock. I personally believe that it is one of the most important things
about selecting a show of cocks to be fought on a certain day, as in a derby. It
is also a necessary thing to know in order to properly condition a cock for
battle.

A cock generally has a six week cycle, and during this six week period, he will
reach a high and a low peak. You would be amazed at the difference in a cock's
fighting ability from his high peak to his low peak. A cock might fight a great
battle when he is at his peak, and look like the ace that he is, but if he is
fought at his low peak he probably won't be able to get out of his own way and
will make a very poor showing at the pit. You will be scratching your head and
wondering what in the world happened to him.

The trick is to learn the cycles of each and every cock that you own and write
it down on the calendar that you will keep for that purpose. That way you will
know when a cock will fight at his best and be able to pick out a show of cocks
that will all be at their peak on fight day.

What you will want to do is start pre-conditioning them six weeks before the day
that you plan to fight them, and then two weeks before the fight you will begin
the actual keep. This way the cocks will be coming on point steadily up until
the fight. All of the cocks in the show will all peak out and be ready to fight
to the best of their ability at the proper time. All the cocks will be at their
own personal peak also.

If you will study this information, and watch your cocks carefully, I am sure
that you will become a much more consistently good feeder, and you will win a
lot more derbies.

This information is worth it's weight in gold to any serious cockfighter. I hope
that you will benefit from it.

Breeding Terms and Techniques

Founding a Line
Once you have purchased the individuals to make up the ideal bird, you can found
a breeding line to work towards this goal. The progenitor (starting bird) will
usually be a cock. He should have good color, well defined markings, good head
qualities and an outgoing personality that is important for a show bird.

The hens that will mate with the progenitor should complement his good points
and modify any weakness. They should be inclined to bulkiness, with a deep mask
and broad head. Any fault in the progenitor can be breed out with successive
generations altering the undesirable trait.

This initial stage of the breeding process is called outbreeding, as you are
breeding a large number of unrelated birds to give a greater choice of birds
next season. Once the line is founded, a form of inbreeding is used to
strengthen the desirable characteristics in your flock. Inbreeding involves
breeding related birds to establish the good traits of the original birds. The
most common form of inbreeding is line-breeding.<div class="feedflare">

Gamefowl - The Story of The Lemons

by: Roberto &quot;Boy&quot; Ocampo Jr.

Recent International Derby Champions, Breeders and Cocker of the Year awards
have been attained by people who had put their faith in the capabilities of a
local strain, the &quot;LEMONS&quot;. For almost 40 years now, this magnificent bloodline
has preserved it's tradition of winning in the highest levels of competition.
Stories about it has been repeatedly told, both verbally and in print, but for
the sake of those who are unfamiliar with it's beginnings, I will again do so.

HISTORY OF THE LEMONS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Mainly responsible for the popularity of those &quot;lemon-hackled&quot; gamecocks of Duke
Hulsey here in the country was the father-son tandem of Don Amado Araneta and
son Jorge (Nene).<div class="feedflare">
