I often have the opportunity to work with people relocating to Edmond from outside of Oklahoma. Of course they have the usual concerns like work, school, and shopping. But for those with families they also want to know about activities outside of school and sports that are available for their kids to participate in.

So, I want to tell you about a "New to Us" business in Edmond that my daughter and I recently discovered. It's The Young Chef's Academy. They are located in the Edmond Exchange at 33rd Street and Broadway. She has had a gift certificate for a free class stuck to the 'fridge for months. Then last week I told her to give them a call and check it out. And she did.

The Young Chef's Academy is a cooking school for kids of all ages. They offer weekly classes as well as week long camps throughout the summer. My daughter went last week. She was in a small class and they made homemade pizza. And not just the assembly line kind of pizza I make at home (okay if I make it, it's frozen). They made their own pizza dough and everything. She had a lot of fun! It was a real treat for her.

Cool Idea For Wine

I was recently out doing what I do, showing houses in Edmond, Oklahoma. While touring a house I noticed a very clever idea a homeowner had. They had an older house that at one time had a trash compactor in the kitchen. I assume the appliance no longer worked or they just did not need it. Either way, they chose to remove the old compactor and replace it with a stylish wine cooler.

What a great and inexpensive idea! The wine cooler fit nicely into the space left by the old trash compactor and updated the kitchen too.

The Edmond Liberty Fest has been recognized nationally as one of the best 4th of July celebrations in the country. The week long event begins on July 28 and concludes with a bang on July 4th. There are many activities and events planned throughout the Edmond event. It would be hard for a busy family to do it all. Here are my top five must do events during the festival;

Taste of Edmond on June 29. Have to start with food! We have always made a point to include this annual event to our holiday plan. For just $10 you receive a wristband that allows you to sample food from area restaurants. This year you will be able to sample from Applebee's, Billy Sims BBQ, BRAVO!, Buffalo Wild Wings, Charleston's Restaurant, Chili's of Edmond, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Coach's Restaurant, Earl's Rib Palace, Fish City Grill, Freddy's Frozen Custard, Full Cup, Hideaway Pizza, Hobby's Hoagies, Interurban, Jimmy John's, Papa Murphy's, Le Cep Bistro, McAlister's Deli, Mimi's Cafe, Namaste' Indian Cuisine, North Fork Bar & Grill, Oklahoma Station BBQ, Opus Prime Steakhouse, Othello's of Edmond, PF Chang's China Bistro, POPS, Steve's Rib, Super Suppers, Ted's Café Escondido, The Catering Co., and The Garden Mediterranean Cuisine. Come hungry! The event starts downtown Edmond at 6:30. Sorry, pets need to stay home for this event.

Road Rally on June 29 at 11:30. I have always wanted to do this but have not had the opportunity! You start the rally at the City Administration Building parking lot. You are given questions and the answers lead you along your route. I just love trivia and think this would be so much fun! Chalk it Up on July 3 at 10:00 at the Edmond Festival Market Place. There are some amazing chalk artists of all ages in Edmond! Arrive early to register for a chalk space as they go quickly. Even if you don't want to participate in the drawing contest, it is worth the trip to see the artists in action! While there you and the family can enjoy music, a moon bounce, and food.

The Parade! July 4 beginning at 9:00. This is don't miss event for Edmond for sure! Try to head out a bit early to stake your claim along the route. The parade route is 1.5 miles, click here for the route map. Pack lots of water too. In addition to the usual marching bands and floats you will see the Edmond Boy Scouts carry the enormous US flag, decorated bikes and more. By the way keep an eye out for the CENTURY 21 Goodyear Green fire engine! Give us a wave!

Fireworks! July 4 beginning at 10:00 from UCO campus. This is the largest fireworks display in the metro and well worth it. While the display can be seen throughout Edmond, (we usually watch from our backyard) you will be able to bring a blanket, lawn chair, and picnic and sit in many grassy areas of the campus. There is no seating in the stadium.

How walkable is this neighborhood? With the price of gas as high as it is, that is becoming a question that more Edmond home buyers are asking. Living in a neighborhood in close proximity to shopping, leisure activities, and dining is becoming much more desirable. There are many areas of Edmond where we are seeing more and more people out walking to take care of daily errands.

Neighborhoods like Pebble Creek, The Trails, Homestead, and Park Lane Estate are examples of walkable neighborhoods. They are all close to shopping like Walmart and Kohls, and dining at Starbucks, Buffalo Wild Wings and more. How does the neighborhood you live in rate as a walkable area?

I recently discovered a cool website that allows you to enter a property address and it will then determine a Walk Score. The site is WalkScore.com. Check it out and enter your address. What is your neighborhood walk score? Edmond had a score of 83 out of 100. Not bad. According to the site Edmond is very walkable. They say you could even get by without a car.

HELP! I Have a Stink!

Just imagine. You are so excited to see an Edmond house that is for sale. The pictures online were perfect. The neighborhood is ideal and the price is right. You just know THIS house will be the one for you. Your Edmond REALTOR leads the way, unlocks the door and there it is, it can't be missed, it's absolutely overwhelming... a foul smell hits you! Ewww! Forget the pictures, forget the neighborhood and the price. You just want out of there! Run for your lives!

The house may have been perfect for you but that smell stays with you. The smell stays with the REALTOR too.

Well, it can happen to anyone, even an Edmond REALTOR. I have a mystery smell in my kitchen. I have scrubbed every surface with bleach until my hands were raw. And the smell keeps coming back. Park Lane Estates Improves Park

Edmond's Park Lane Estates is in the process of updating their neighborhood park. Park Lane's active home owner's association is installing new playground equipment. The new playground at the park will bring enjoyment to neighborhood kiddos for years to come.

Park Lane Estates is located in Edmond just south of Danforth Road between Santa Fe and Kelly. The neighborhood is conveniently located near shopping at Walmart, Kohl's and very soon Lowe's. Recreation can be found at the nearby Edmond Soccer Fields and Mitch Park. Kids in the neighborhood attend Ida Freeman Elementary, Central Middle School, and Edmond North High School. Your Edmond Shopping Guide

I admit it to you. I am not only an Edmond REALTOR but also a POWER SHOPPER! I love to shop for all things. When relocating to a new community like Edmond it can take a while to figure out where to shop for everything from the basics like toilet paper and dog food to a special gift for your favorite REALTOR, tee hee. So, if you are new to Edmond or considering a relocation, here are a few of my favorite places to shop in and around Edmond, Oklahoma.

The Basics: For the basic necessities of everyday life I like Super Target at 2nd Street and Bryant. I can always find everything I need. They always have a good selection and cuts of meat. The produce is fresh and they offer some organic options. In addition to getting all I need to feed my family I can usually find a treat for myself. By the way, there is a Starbucks on the grocery side for a quick boost. If I just need to run in and grab a few items, I usually run into the Homeland at 2nd and Santa Fe. I can get in and out pretty fast.

Garden: I was not blessed with a green thumb. But I do like my yard to look like I was. For flowers I like Under the Sun on 33rd and Broadway (they have recently added a new location on Bryant.) For trees and shrubs TLC is the best. The price is a bit higher than Lowe's and Home Depot but the product is always healthy and hearty. TLC has a great Moonlight Madness sale every year and it's this weekend. For all the rest like mulch and soil I usually hit Lowe's.

Gift for a Girlfriend: I love to shop for my friends! I am such a one for me one for you kind of gal. So, when I buy a gift for a friend I probably like it so much I bought one for myself too! My favorites include Francessca's in Spring Creek Plaza, Serendipity Market (a great place to find WebKinz too), and La Tee Da in downtown Edmond.

Bargain Shopping: When I'm looking for a bargain, and who isn't?, I love Kohl's! Kohl's is located at Danforth and Santa Fe. I can always find something there for everyone on my list and almost always on sale. Which means I can get one for me, one for you, one for me!

Try the Spicy Pickle in Edmond!

On a typical Tuesday afternoon in Edmond, Oklahoma, Edmond Realtors gather together at Broker's Opens around town. A Broker's Open is an open house for other Edmond Realtors. It is a great opportunity for us to preview different properties (sometimes several in one neighborhood), network with other Realtors about available Edmond Real Estate or new listings, and have lunch.

Yesterday, no Broker's Opens. Well, a girl still has to eat!

So, I tried out Edmond's new eatery, the Spicy Pickle, located at 15th and Bryant in the Spring Creek Shopping Center. The Spicy Pickle menu includes paninis, salads, subs, and pizzetti. You can either build your own from a list of ingredients or order from the menu. I had the Gobbler Panini, yum! My husband was with me and he had a Pizzetti. The restaurant is bright and cheerful and the service was both fast and friendly.

Next time you out shopping Spring Creek in Edmond, stop by the Spicy Pickle for lunch! I think they are going to give another sandwich cafe in the area a run for their money!

Spend the Rainy Day at the Edmond Library

I remember how difficult a rainy day like today can be on Edmond moms! Kids that are used to getting outside to play get restless very fast on a day like today. Time for a field trip! Edmond residents are fortunate to have a great local library that features a vast children's area.

Our Edmond Library offers an annual summer reading program for kids and teens that runs from June 1 through July 31. Signing up is super easy. Just stop by the library and complete a quick form. They even give you some fun prizes just for signing up.

In addition to the Summer Reading Program, the Edmond library will host events throughout the summer. When my girls were small they always got a big kick out of seeing the Lucky Penny Players. You have been ever so diligent in preparing your Edmond home for sale. You have set the stage both inside and out. Have you considered how your Edmond home looks at night? After all Edmond home buyers are out looking at homes at all times of the day. If you’re looking to spice up the outside appearance of your home, exterior lighting offers many options.

To get you started, the lighting pros at GE explain some basic lighting techniques. Ambient lighting, such as yard lights and porch lights, provide overall illumination, while task lighting consists of low-voltage lights along sidewalks and paths. Accent lighting includes spotlights and other types of special-effect lighting to dramatize outdoor sculptures and fountains. To add depth and drama, try up lighting trees, landscape features and architectural elements by placing lights at an angle so objects are lit from below. Back lighting, which is achieved by angling a light against a wall or fence behind an object, creates a beautiful silhouette.

For security, make sure patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces are well lit, especially where there are steps that can be a potential tripping hazard. To prevent uninvited pests from crashing your next patio party, use bug lights, which contain a special coating that makes the light invisible to bugs, so they aren’t drawn to it.

Whichever lighting technique you use, use Energy Star bulbs, which use up to 75 percent less energy and last 8 to 10 times longer than ordinary incandescent bulbs. Outdoor timers and motion sensors also can save money and conserve energy. To get maximum effect from your outdoor lighting, clean exposed bulbs several times during the season. Once you master these few lighting techniques, your home will exude a warm glow that attracts admirers and possible buyers.

By the way, did you know that dirt and dust that builds up on exterior light bulbs can cause up to 40% decrease in the amount of light. Keep those light fixtures clean!

The long winter is over! It’s finally time to pull out the patio furniture, fire up the grill and enjoy outdoor activities in your Edmond yard. Here are five tips from HGTV.com that will keep your grass looking green all summer long and on your way to an Edmond Yard of the Month award!

When cutting the grass, try to keep its height at about two-and-a-half to three inches. Sharpen the blade of your mower at least three times a year to avoid grass split ends, and be sure to change your mowing pattern to prevent soil compaction, which will inhibit grass growth.

Instead of lightly watering your grass three to four times a week, give it a good soaking once a week – most lawns need about an inch of water. Watering early in the morning is best.

To combat weeds, make sure to use herbicides specially formulated to combat the types of weeds that are growing in your yard. If you aren’t a fan of herbicides, weed removal tools, such as weed hounds, usually do the trick.

Over-fertilizing is a common problem and can kill your lawn. You should only fertilize in the spring and summer months if you neglected to apply fertilizer in the fall. Every time you mow your lawn the clippings provide nitrogen, an excellent natural fertilizer.

Keep kids, pets, vehicles and wheelbarrows off moist soil and emerging grass. Wait until your lawn is full and dry to enjoy it.

Red Flags When Touring Edmond Real Estate

When you are out touring Edmond homes you want to know whether your couch will fit and ponder where the TV will go. But there are several other potential problems that buyers of Edmond real estate should keep a look out for too when touring a home. While a home inspection will find most problems, you should watch for some red flags. Frontdoor.com, HGTV’s real estate Web site lists the following items;

Mediocre Maintenance. Three layers of roofing and gutters with plants growing out of them are signs that the owners have not kept up with the property. What else have they neglected? Check out the Property Condition Disclosure.

Foundation Failures. If the yard slopes toward the house, it could cause water to run down the foundation walls or into the basement, which could result in costly repairs. Also if foundation cracks or bulges are thicker than 1/3 inch, the house could have serious structural issues.

Faulty Wiring. Make sure all switches and outlets function properly. Flickering lights, circuits that don’t work, and warm or hot outlets or faceplates are all symptoms of wiring problems. Go ahead and turn on and off the lights.

Fresh Paint …On One Wall. New paint can spruce up walls, but they can also hide bigger problems, such as water damage, mildew or mold.

Foggy or Non-functioning Windows. Check for water in between double-paned windows and make sure all windows work properly.

Structural Walls and Floors. The house may have an open floor plan, but was it always open or did the homeowners renovate? If a load-bearing wall was removed without adjusting the framing, it can shift weight to other parts of the house.

Bugs. No one wants a house with a pest problem. Look for evidence of unwelcome creatures as you tour the home.
