It's a simple story with a powerful message of how we need to remember that our lives are interconnected and that we need each other's help to exist.

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall in his home to see the farmer and his wife open a package. What food might this contain the mouse wondered? He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse warned all the animals "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr.Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mouse trap in the house!" The pig felt bad so said "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said "Wow Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbours came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral and the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember that when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to help one another.

We can at least educate ourselves about the reality of their situation.

A recent article by Arpan Tulsyan published on India Together provides an in-depth report on the homeless of India.

The article states that "about 46 per cent of the people reported extreme poverty as the primary reason for homelessness. Most of these people have migrated in search of livelihoods, but urban centres offer only irregular, uncertain employment. Besides, urban areas come with an attendant set of problems: the cost of living is much higher than in rural areas; there are no community support systems; and they have to pay for everything, including water and toilets, which are free in rural areas."

The article dispels several common stereotypes that many of us have of the homeless. For example, while many people believe that the homeless are all beggars, this article reports that just 28% of homeless are beggars while the others earn their living as day labourers, rag pickers or other unstable occupations.

There are several GiveIndia listed NGOs that provide a host of services to help the homeless. And so the next time you're stuck at a traffic light looking helplessly at small children play on the sidewalk while their mother is stirring a pot on a chullah, remember that you can do something to help.

The response of GiveIndia towards the donor gives one an impression of working with a well managed organization. The initiative of GiveIndia for sharing the information about the person to whom the money is donated gives surety to the donor that the money is being utilized for a good cause. As GiveIndia is aiding the nascent NGO's, GiveIndia is promoting an atmosphere of caring in society and motivating them to progress further.

Sidharth sponsored a poor elderly woman for a month.

Bharati Dey said:“It was indeed great to receive the feedback reports. The Americans, in particular, seem to have devised several ways to involve the community while raising money for good causes. Some of the the more common ones in the States (but unheard of here in India) are:

* bake sales where office workers make a treat at home and then bring it in to office and sell it to raise funds
* car washes where students come together and wash cars for $5 or $10 for charity
* cookie sales as popularised by the Girl Scouts

However, there is no limit to the creativity that charities and do-gooders have when coming up with ideas. Here are a few FUNdraisers we’ve read about recently:

Famous UK celebrities used Lego bricks to make models that were auctioned online for a NGO doing work for people with autism.

Pajama-clad students walked 95 miles for a charity that helps disabled children. The six students are calling themselves the "Walking Wee Willie Winkies".

In the US, men are growing moustaches for charity!

In Cardiff, a woman is planning on doing an 100 foot abseil drop, off the roof of the Wales Millenium Center to raise funds for the venue.

Even toddlers aren’t left out! In Bahrain, a pre-school raised money in a sponsored charity sports day and a teddy bear picnic at the school.

So clearly, people aren’t lacking in imagination when thinking of ways to raise money for causes they care about. Most of these fundraisers will raise small amounts but it's these type of events that build a culture of giving where everyone does a little bit to help out in their community.

Have you taken part in an unusual fundraiser? Described by Jim Dwyer in a New York Times article as “one of the most generous and secretive philanthropists of modern times”, Mr. Feeney lives frugally; he flies caoch, doesn't own a house and buys readymade suits.

Mr. Feeney, who made a fortune as founder of Duty Free Shoppers, the world's largest duty-free retail chain, transferred all of his wealth in 1987 to his foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies. Atlantic, which has around $4 billion in assets, gives away about $350 million a year.

Mr. Feeney chose and worked hard to keep the story of his fortune and his philanthropy out of the spotlight to the extent that he established Atlantic in Bermuda, to avoid disclosures required in the United States.

In the NYT article when asked why he had chosen to reveal himself now, Mr. Feeney replied “A lot of wealthy people, they don’t realize they have the alternatives of spending the money for good. If they knew it gives so much satisfaction, I wouldn’t have to persuade them.”

In a radio interview on NPR, Feeney told guest host James Hattori that his foundation is also taking on a more public role after it became "synonymous with anonymous." At 76, Feeney says the time felt right to share his story.

"It's a time and tide thing. And probably, as with other services you use, you don't really stop and think "How much is this costing me? Wait a minute...costing?? I thought I was making a donation so what's this COST all about!?"

What donors don't realise is that many NGOs (non-profits), including GiveIndia, are intermediaries. We connect people who want to donate, to NGOs and projects that need support.

GiveIndia incurs expenses in our efforts to raise money for NGOs and projects in need, and so does every other fundraising intermediary. Costs for people, for technology, for office space; costs just like any other business, though on a much more frugal level.

Now that you've digested this fact, can you guess what the average cost of fundraising as a percentage is? Basically, how many Rupees does an organisation spend to get a Rs.100 donation?

It is our hope that each one of you reading this, takes a guess by voting on the poll. Do also leave your comments on the blog so that we have an interesting dialogue on this important topic. After all the comments are in, GiveIndia will post a follow-up giving you the inside story on fundraising costs.

So go ahead and take a guess now.

These effects, in turn, impair mental and cognitive development by reducing the amount of interaction children have both with their environment, and with those who provide care.

* Robbed of their mental as well as physical potential, malnourished children who live past childhood face diminished futures. They will become adults with lower physical and intellectual abilities, lower levels of productivity and higher levels of chronic illness and disability, often in societies with little economic capacity for even minimal therapeutic and rehabilitative measures.

In a nutshell, children who don’t get the right food at the right age stand the risk of paying for that their WHOLE lives.

Agreed that everyone is feeling the pinch but for more fortunate people, it means sacrificing non-essential expenses to meet the rising cost of essential items. For the poverty stricken, it means not being able to give children the future they deserve.

What many people don't realize is that this is a personalised report, as in every feedback features a different beneficiary. So, for example if you donated a cataract operation and your best friend donated a cataract operation, you both wouldn't get the same generic report of how the operation benefited a person in need. No, you would get the story of Mr. xyz and how this operation helped change his life and your best friend would get a feedback report featuring Mrs. abc and how the operation changed her life.

Our partner NGOs are responsible for collecting this information, in many cases along with a photograph of the beneficiary and sending it to GiveIndia. And then we forward it to the donor. In the 2007/8 financial year, the GiveIndia feedback team ensured that 14,000 feedback reports got sent to donors. Pretty amazing, huh?

From time to time we have situations where the NGO doesn't send us timely reports or is no longer partnered with us so doesn't keep their promise about old feedbacks that they still owe us. These "missing" feedbacks are a very small number, less than 1% but that doesn't make them less important to us. The feedback team at GiveIndia, in the last few months, has been conducting a MAJOR exercise to try and get all these overdue feedbacks squared away, and have been fairly successful at sending out dozens of overdue reports.

Just four days ago, Mr. Srikanth Kalisipudi, a donor who got his feedback long after it was due, emailed us. He said "Feedback was good and I really appreciate the team for that. Till now I was thinking the money donated has gone but now after 3 years I got a mail from you saying that the money was utilized for the cause."

So while it is obviously better to be on time than late (and that is what we strive for), it is also better to be late than never. If we didn't send him the report, Mr. Kalisipudi may have always had doubts about GiveIndia and maybe about donating to charitable causes. So, GiveIndia's promise to donors will never be taken lightly; we'll do everything we can to fulfill it.

Read these excerpts:

Why is it important for NGOs to have accountability and transparency?

It's important for two reasons. First, an NGO looking for financial support is not going to succeed unless it shows evidence of the impact of its work. It has to explain use of funds to donors and funding agencies. A growing trend is that funding agencies are putting increasing pressure on NGOs to make their financial transactions and governance transparent. Second, NGOs exist because they address social problems and work for under-privileged groups. It's important to be accountable to those people too, who are the beneficiaries and will be the ultimate judge.

Why do you encourage NGOs to look for aid from local donors?

Foreign development funding is on the decline. The major focus of the G8 countries is Africa, not countries like India where there are laws and strategic governance in place. Also, if civil society is to become a major force in solving local problems, then local funding has to happen. It strengthens accountability, reduces corruption and increases impact of the development work. Many donors are not confident how their money is used, so here transparency helps gain public support.

You can read the whole interview on the Times of India site, where it first appeared on April 25, 2008.

And that is why we are inspired by Bill and Melinda Gates. When talking about issues like poverty and disease, Bill Gates' logic is so clear; his reasoning is so compelling. Here's an excerpt from his phenomenal speech given to the 2007 graduating class of Harvard University.

"You graduates came to Harvard at a different time. You know more about the world’s inequities than the classes that came before. In your years here, I hope you’ve had a chance to think about how—in this age of accelerating technology—we can finally take on these inequities, and we can solve them.

Imagine, just for the sake of discussion, that you had a few hours a week and a few dollars a month to donate to a cause—and you wanted to spend that time and money where it would have the greatest impact in saving and improving lives. Where would you spend it?

For Melinda and for me, the challenge is the same: how can we do the most good for the greatest number with the resources we have.

During our discussions on this question, Melinda and I read an article about the millions of children who were dying every year in poor countries from diseases that we had long ago made harmless in this country. Measles, malaria, pneumonia, hepatitis B, yellow fever. One disease I had never even heard of, rotavirus, was killing half a million kids each year—none of them in the United States.

We were shocked. We had just assumed that if millions of children were dying and they could be saved, the world would make it a priority to discover and deliver the medicines to save them. But it did not. For under a dollar, there were interventions that could save lives that just weren’t being delivered.

If you believe that every life has equal value, it’s revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not. We said to ourselves: “This can’t be true. But if it is true, it deserves to be the priority of our giving.”

So we began our work in the same way anyone here would begin it. We asked: “How could the world let these children die?”

The answer is simple, and harsh. The market did not reward saving the lives of these children, and governments did not subsidize it. So the children died because their mothers and their fathers had no power in the market and no voice in the system.

But you and I have both.

We can make market forces work better for the poor if we can develop a more creative capitalism—if we can stretch the reach of market forces so that more people can make a profit, or at least make a living, serving people who are suffering from the worst inequities. We also can press governments around the world to spend taxpayer money in ways that better reflect the values of the people who pay the taxes.

If we can find approaches that meet the needs of the poor in ways that generate profits for business and votes for politicians, we will have found a sustainable way to reduce inequity in the world."

Bill Gates, June 7, 2007
Harvard Commencement

communication, you'll read "carefully screened NGOs" or "NGOs chosen after due diligence was done". But that doesn't really tell you what filters we apply while screening or what we look for while undertaking the due diligence.

We think it's really important that our donors know what the selection criteria are:

1. Organisations must be registered non-profits that implement social development projects in India, with no political affiliations.

2. At least 50% of the beneficiaries must be economically underprivileged.

3. The organisation should meet the Credibility Alliance's norms or be willing to meet them within six months of listing on our site.

4. The organisation should be willing to provide prompt feedback for donations made through the GiveIndia site.

The Credibility Alliance, mentioned in point 3, is a consortium of voluntary organisations and networks, which has come together to enhance good governance in the voluntary sector. The Alliance's norms ensure that the organisations that fulfill them are credible.

So what are the benefits of having one standard for credibility for NGOs?

Well, for donors who are short on time, it saves them the effort of doing their own diligence of different organisations. In any case, most lay persons would find it difficult to know what to look for while doing this diligence. Instead, they have the comfort of knowing that the screening has been done for them.

A NGO also benefits because by having this stamp of credibility they are able to attract more donors who already trust them and have a high level of comfort while making donations.

Do you know any NGOs who are interested in raising funds through the GiveIndia website and who could meet these norms? Post a comment and someone from our listing team will be in touch.
