If you just can’t get enough out of your graphics card playing any of the newest Valve Source games there is a hidden ‘Ultra High’ setting that you can activate through the console.

The console is normally where you would enter other commands and cheats. You have to active this under the advanced keyboard settings in the options menu.

How to Activate the ‘Ultra High’ setting in Valve Source Games (Portal, HL2, TF2, etc):

  1. Active the console under the advanced keyboard settings in the options menu.
  2. Hit ‘~’ (tilde) to activate the console and enter ‘mat_picmip -3′ to activate the ‘Ultra High’ setting. Feel to free to go lower if you think your hardware can handle it.

NOTE: If this slows your PC to a crawl then you obviously do not have the hardware to run the ‘Ultra High’ settings.

Comparison between Very high and Ultra high:

Steam Ultra High Settings

A couple more comparisons to look at.

The setting ranges from 4 to (-10) with the higher number being more compressed.

How low can you go?

Valce uses the Source engine for all of their games, there for its ust a Valve game, You didnt need to add the word Source to every time “Valve Game” was mentioned

  5. joeiswrong Says:

Not all Valve games are on the Source engine, buddy. Ever heard of HL1, Day of Defeat, Opposing Force, Team Fortress Classic, or Counter-Strike? None of those games are Source.

  6. 1ron1c Says:

valve does not use the source engine for all their games…

maybe the majority of their new games are source based but CS 1.6/DoD are not run on the source engine

  7. Anonymous Says:

the original half life, counter-strike, team fortress, and various other games were not made with the source engine. don’t correct people when your information is bullshit.

Actually, you can’t go lower than 0,99 on the TF2 in intarnats, otherwise VAC protected servers will kick you for hax. : (

thx, for the info, worked out nicely

  12. Kurrus Says:

OH NOES HAX, VAC will not do anything to you as long as you don’t modify the game core files (exes and dlls) or inject new files of that kind. Customization (including, but not limited to, skins, sounds, models, console scripts, console scripts such as this) will NOT get you banned, or kicked, or anything.

Besides VAC doesn’t kick. It bans. Months after it detects the cheat.
