It has to do with exploration…

    By Janet Clarey | May 14, 2008

This kind of confirms my thoughts around the digital immigrant/native thing. (that it is not about age as much as ability and motivation)

Dan Dyer of Jet Blue University on the success of their Web 2.0 solution (powered by Awareness, Inc.):

“…some people just pick it up. I mean some people just run with it. It doesn’t have anything to do with their prior experience. It has to do with their exploration…we allow people to explore new tools and ideas with a little liberty.”

“that it is not about age as much as ability and motivation”

certainly, but I think it is also about time. Younger folks can choose to use more of their time to work with new technologies and bump up against the barriers and overcome them. Older folks have jobs and families and need to rest occasionally! Sounds like Dan Dyer is offering time and permission to explore.

Ah yes, Richard…time! How long has it been since I uttered the phrase, “there’s nothing to do around here!” Intrinsic motivation I think has a lot to do with time though. Right now, I’m am trying to avoid acting on my motivation to go back to back to sleep…

I was struck by the CEO’s commitment to not imposing structure… essentially, to allow disorder. All the more impressive given the corporate-university metaphor, which in less skillful hands can look like Mr. Chips Meets Death by PowerPoint.

Ability can be acquired, though somewhat less easily over time; motivation (the internal state) can be influenced from the outside, but primarily from within. That’s really how you shape an organizational culture: encouraging, reinforcing, combining.
