Technology and working from home

April 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I am preparing a new technology series on things to consider when working from home - some of the initial ideas and considerations include:

  • Health and Safety (monitors, ergonomic chairs, foot rests, eye breaks, pat testing, hazardous substances)
  • Environmental Factors (humidity, temperature, air, and noise)
  • Communications (Internet, Phone, Fax, Separate Phone Line, Remote Access and VPN)
  • Layout (Sun Spots) Curtains/Blinds and Lighting
  • Post and Deliveries
  • Furniture (book shelves, barrister shelves)
  • Decor and Plants
  • Location (room vs area) dedicated work area
  • Hidden costs you may not have yet considered
  • Equipment (Computer, Printer, Fax)
  • Software (Utilities) Don’t overload your computer with non-essential software
  • Office Supplies
  • Reference Materials
  • Work Schedule, Work Ethics and Rules
  • Social Networking, Video Conferencing, Visiting the office, and Meetings (book a local meeting room)
  • Backup, Anti-virus, Anti-Spam and Data Protection
  • Home Address vs Business Address (including email)
  • Finances, Planning Permssion, Tax and Insurance
  • Organisation and Clutter
  • Dealing with power problems
  • Green Issues
  • Support and Maintenance Contracts
  • Exercise
  • On the move (email, collaboration)
  • Home Security

If you have experiences or views of using technology whilst working from home then your feedback is welcomed.
