Who will watch ‘Tiny TV?’
Cory Bergman May 5th, 2008
With the launch of AT&T Mobile TV, the New York Times looks at how mobile TV has caught on in other countries. In Japan, 20 million phones are equipped with TV receivers. South Korea has 8.2 million. By contrast, it’s estimated than 100,000 people have subscribed to Verizon’s mobile TV service since it launched in March of last year.
Meanwhile, members of the Open Mobile Video Coalition — local broadcasters who plan to use their digital signals to broadcast to handheld devices — continue their quest for TV anywhere. But lots of questions remain: Is there enough spectrum? How to monetize it? How many people will watch it?

re; OMVC/local broadcasters getting into mobile TV…you’re right, there are a lot of questions, but whether there is enough spectrum is not one of them. There is. The technical trials have been very promising also, so the questions all revolve around trying to settle on a business model(s).

I have mobile TV with Sprint. My work pays for it and I still rarely use the TV service. The whole experience is subpar, from the device, small screen, terrible sound, etc.

Forgot: How much will this drain my battery?

I’d never be able to watch TV shows on my Centro. But I certainly wouldn’t mind having better access to news, etc
That battery question is key, though.

In technical trials, current battery technology appears to support about 2 hours of viewing.

Mobil tv sounds pretty cool but at the same time who wants to watch tv on their phone? My phone can play movies but I’ve never played one on it what’s the point? We have 3 laptops 2pc’s 3tvs and 2lcd’s why would I watch anything on my phone. It sounds like a cool idea but once you have it what’s the point!
