Pirates Acquire Jason Michaels, Brewers Mull Turnbow

After being designated for assignment back on May 5, Jason Michaels has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for, what else, a player to be named later. As Tim noted on Monday, Michaels has been pretty terrible so far this year. Not that he was so hot during his tenure in Cleveland. He wasn't able to get his OBP above .330 or his SLG above .400. Not so hot for a corner outfielder.

The Pirates options OF Nyjer Morgan to Triple A to make room for Michaels.  The Bucs now have two open spots on the 40-man roster.  Feel free to speculate.

In other recently-designated news, it is believed that the Brewers have placed reliever Derrick Turnbow on waivers. The former closer was DFA a week ago, so something needs to be done soon. Tom Haudricourt believes he could clear waivers by Friday.

If he clears, he could accept an assignment to Triple A with the Brewers. Otherwise he'd become a free agent and forfeit the remainder of this $3.2MM salary.

I think the Pirates are only at 38 now for the 40 man so no one has to come off at this time.

Yes, mlb.com currently has them at 38 including Michaels.

Don't forget to wish tim a happy bday everybody! Happy Birthday Tim!

The Jays are only carrying 24 guys now and JP said the 25th is likely to be someone "out of the organization that won't be obtained via trade"...what does the MLBTR team think about that...Brad Wilkerson? Any ideas?

Nevermind, it is Wilkerson. Or so thinks Jeff Blair of the Globe And Mail.

Wow. What on earth do the Pirates want with Michaels?

Never mind Michaels, what on earth do the Pirates want with Whiffkerson?

"Wow. What on earth do the Pirates want with Michaels?"

It would allow them to get Morgan consistant playing time in Triple A. Michaels also serves as depth incase the Pirates trade Bay and/or Nady.

I don't see what Whiffkerson would add to the Blue Jays either. They would have been better served keeping the Big Hurt. By the way, is there a worse GM/Manager combo than Toronto's Richiardi and Gibbons?

The Pirates' AAA affiliate has Kevin Thompson (28-year-old journeyman) playing CF now. Why not call him up instead of signing Michaels? Besides, there's something to be said for rewarding a guy having a great year in AAA - Thompson's hitting .344/.411/.563 this year.

It has been reported that Kevin Thompson has "developed minor wrist soreness" and that the Indians paid a portion (probably a large portion) of Michals salary.

The Michals transaction is low-risk, allows Morgan to play everyday in AAA and gives the Bucs a slightly better bat off the bench.

I don't think Thompson is playing Centerfield everyday down in Indy. Left or Right? Sure. I could be wrong, but I think the Center job is held down by some guy named Andrew McCutchen.

Yep - you're right about McCutchen - just happened to be out of the lineup when I checked.

Thompson probably developed his wrist soreness from punching the wall when he heard about Michaels. ;-)
