Indians Prefer Infield Acquisition?
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes the Indians' preference to be to acquire an infielder, if they are to explore the trade market. If so, they might pass on discussing potentially available outfielders such as Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, and Jason Bay. However, Hoynes notes the Indians' past interest in Dunn.
Hoynes believes the Brian Roberts rumblings could resurface, perhaps a month or two from now. Peter Gammons suggested in April that the Orioles' decent start might cause Peter Angelos to mandate retention of Roberts.
Some other possibly available infielders: Garrett Atkins, Nick Johnson (perhaps six weeks from now), Aubrey Huff, Mark Grudzielanek, Jose Castillo, Cristian Guzman, Felipe Lopez, Melvin Mora, Chad Tracy, and Mark Ellis (once he recovers from a strained hamstring). It seems easier to acquire an impact outfielder. Regardless, Hoynes believes the Indians would use their starting pitching surplus to engineer a trade.

The Julio Lugo suggestion is laughable, so I'll ignore it. I cringe when Hoynes starts talking about starting pitching surpluses. C.C. and Byrd are most likely gone at season's end. Sowers isn't ready and may never be. So much for the surplus.

Yeah pitching surpluses have always been a mythical thing in baseball.

Again, we get a Peter Angelos innuendo. I get so tired of these. All evidence since Andy MacPhail took over is that Angelos has not interfered. And, yet, we get constantly bombarded with writers suggesting that he will. Okay, he has a past of interference, so it's reasonable that writers might, once in awhile, suggest the possibility. But it's lazy writing and research to pound the idea, which has no clear basis in present circumstance. I'm disappointed in you Tim for referencing an old reference by Gammons that was unfounded in the first place.

I'm really hoping for the Orioles to have a strong year with an exciting group of young players leading the way. This will prove once and for all that Angelos ruined one of the most professional of all baseball organizations.

I could see the O's making a move trading Mora + cash for a pair of mid-level prospects. That said, he's been a very cooperative team player given the ups and downs of the franchise, so the O's might overvalue him a bit (and arguably, rightly so).

Dunn wouldn't make sense anyways since they already have Hafner to DH. Neither can play the field well but both can mash the ball (and strikeout). I just don't think that Dunn has much left when it comes to being an OF. He's destined to be a DH in the AL.

Well, i wouldn't say this indians infield is too bad. I think it would be a bit better to go after maybe a corner outfielder, no center field options. Can anyone say Juan Rivera?

…Don’t read too much into this one. The teams needs are kind of in fluctuation mode but its no different than this offseason at its base. It was Big RH OF bat for so long, but since BenFran is hitting so well at the moment it just makes it look less pressing. Bringing in a middle-infielder is extremely unlikely though (only really a Roberts type would make any sense). 1B is pointless because of so many guys that can, and will, play there throughout the year (Garko/Blake/Martinez) and Blake will be in the lineup nearly every day (something fishy going on between him and the teams management/front-office). So, “infield” really means 3B which sends Blake to the OF again; but that’s just the same OF/3B they looked for in the preseason…
Most fitting names to head to Cleveland are Holliday, Atkins, Bay, etc and more of a longshot but possible would be guys like Giles or Griffey who can play RF as a LHer with Gutierrez/Francisco being RH platoon/backup for the corner spots.
Juan Rivera doesnt really provide enough of an upgrade from the OFers they are using, meaning trading for him is probably not worth it.
