A sure way to isolate the viewers indeed. I stopped the video after that comment, just as I have ignored any related comments and totally switched off the offending tv channel/radio station/website. I am really fed up with crazy comments like that. I was only young when the original GTA came out, and played it. I'm not going around killing people in reality. In fact, I'm pretty sure people were fucked up before video games, movies and other media was around. As far as I am aware Guy Fawkes, Hitler and Jack The Ripper to name but a few, were around before the advent of new media. Yet I hope you agree they aren’t very pleasant people. People making this kind of fuss are going to ruin the fun for everyone. I’m not sure why you escaped the UK? But one of the reasons that I would like to, and like the record number of people leaving, it’s because of the controlling nanny state. Media fears just fuel this rubbish. Sorry for a negative comment, I really do enjoy the show normally, but it needs to be said. The fact my favourite media 2.0 site is the one making the comments is the most frustrating part of it all. Especially considering one of the other sites (black20 news) on the same day actually had an interesting video dedicated to GTA4.

Posted by Olivia on Thu 08/05/08 - 10:15:00 AMHi glypo Thanks for the comment - i knew this show would get some feedback! Like I said - i dont think games like GTA suddenly turn regular people into axe-wielding murderers, pimps or drug dealers, but I think it´s naive to say that any kind of new media, whether it be a Tarantino movie or a great videogame does not have some influence on some people. Im not trying to ruin the fun, I just wanted to point out that despite the fact I think the game is great, there is no smoke without fire. Im sorry you stopped watching the show because of it, but im not going to pretend to think otherwise, just to appeal to the masses. Take care, Liv xx

Posted by glypo on Thu 08/05/08 - 04:54:49 PMI agree, new media can have an influence on people. You raved about Twitter, and I signed up for an account... so you certainly influenced me there. Actually that's a bad example, as Twitter confused me and I ended up deleting my account within a day or so. Even so, as great and as beautiful as you are, if you told me to do something bad... I wouldn't. I honestly believe that it makes no difference what people are exposed to, a small number of people will always be easily influenced. If you ban one thing, or everything, they will just be influenced by other things. Therefore I would say it was naive to assume that new media would influence people to do bad things any more then anything else.

Posted by Snowstone on Wed 07/05/08 - 06:28:55 PMYeahhhhhh the iPhone is coming to Portugal, too bad I don't use Vodafone and that I don't have enough euros to buy it... I agree with you Olivia, in the matter of the violence in video games, but parents also have to be responsible with what their kids play. Once in Fnac I saw a father with his son, no more than 10 years old, and the kid was asking the father to buy at the time GTA:Vice City, and the father without much fuzz picked the game and headed to the checkout. So when parents buy games with mature content to their kids, who is to blame, the video games or the parents who don't care what kind of game their buying.

Posted by epjenyus on Wed 07/05/08 - 03:41:06 PMI love my Zune. The screen is bright and I actually like the interface with the Zune App and the Zune itself. I have found it superior to the iPod I gave away. The other comments are right. The mass market moves on hype not quality. Quality is a niche market.

Posted by whatknows on Wed 07/05/08 - 02:49:43 PMI hate to mention this, loving MoBuzz as I do, but... In your segment on the iPhone and Vodaphone, the picture you have of the iPhone magically appears to be running Windows XP. It is only funny because I have been noticing that a ton of bloggers are using this same photoshopped image when talking about random iPhone news. Are we that inoculated to XP's rolling green hills?

Posted by ollie.wally on Wed 07/05/08 - 11:41:44 AMEating fried bacon eggs and tomatoes while watching the show in Spring sunshine - bliss :-) Influence of gaming can be positive or negative. I play Civilization IV with the Beyond The Sword Expansion pack and I believe this to be a very positive and educational influence on my life. Like Sarah Tea I find it cathartic to relieve stress from real life where often you may have no control over events or how other people treat you. The creative nature of this game of building things up, having long term goals, developing a behavioural reputation, negotiating with other leaders, orchestrating logistical operations and investing in education is very popular, good mental exercise and has made me a better planner in real life. The general philosophy of Sid Meiers is almost spiritual and I feel much healthier for it. NIN mentioned yesterday featured on Quake I which is a great one for sharpening up your reactions, as is Combat Flight Simulator - good thing about well written older games is they run on anything and if you don't mind old graphics - bloody quickly too. :-) BTW if you have graphics problems with CIV IV - BTS halfway through the game, have a look at this helpful site: http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Civilization_IV

Posted by darkcandle0 on Wed 07/05/08 - 08:37:45 AMI agree that violent games can effect childrens minds which is why it has an 18 years up rating on it and the only reason games get put down for being violent is because irresponsible parents let their 5 year old kids play it and then wonder "why is little timmy trying to stab my cat?"

Posted by Sarah_Tea on Wed 07/05/08 - 07:06:24 AMVideo games help me release my stress especially violent ones. Ofcourse video games influence people but not to the degree they will stab each other to death. By the way Mario Kart is a bad influence on me when I drive on the road...too real life isn't like Mario Kart. Zune is a good MP3 Player and even slightly better than the ipod and isn't as bad looking now that they have slimed it down and gave it a bit of a touch up. However there is no way that Zune is going to take Ipod's place. Most people could buy a good MP3 like a zune or they could buy a flashy Ipod which is a brand name, most people will go for ipod even if the other mp3 player is 10 times better. Same goes for Iphone, there are alot of really good Cell phones released even better than the Iphone but people are buying a brandname and a status symbol not just a cell phone or MP3 player.

Zune is a good MP3 player and offers a bit more for your money but there is noway it is going to replace the Ipod...most people buy products because of the name and how they will be assocaited if they purchase it, the same goes for Iphone, there are alot of better phones than the Iphone but no one gives a hoot because they are buying a status symbol...never the less im not buying a new MP3 player or a cell phone till the iphone is released only because I get one for free.
