May 19, 2009
This rich, dense, chocolaty cake dates back to the early 20th century and was invented in the Southern U.S., originally made from beets and cocoa. Its signature red color set it apart from the earlier, fluffy white Angel’s Food Cake. Also known as Red Velvet Cake, Red Devil’s Cake and Waldorf Astoria Cake, this sinfully decadent dessert first appeared in cookbooks in 1902. By 1970 the cake’s popularity faded when red dye, which often is used to kick-up the color, was linked to cancer.
May 27, 2009
Originally named the Epsicle, the Popsicle was invented in 1905 by 11-year-old Frank Epperson, who left a mixture of powdered soda and water in a cup with a stirring stick outside overnight. That evening San Francisco had a record low temperature and Epperson woke to find what someday would become his $60 million fortune. Epperson sold his frozen-flavored ice on a stick at an amusement park in Oakland, Calif., and was issued a patent in 1924. Today, the Popsicle, renamed by Epperson’s kids, is the No. 1 kid’s novelty brand.
May 19, 2013
This rich, dense, chocolaty cake dates back to the early 20th century and was invented in the Southern U.S., originally made from beets and cocoa.
May 27, 2013
Originally named the Epsicle, the Popsicle was invented in 1905 by 11-year-old Frank Epperson, who left a mixture of powdered soda and water in a cup with a stirring stick outside overnight.
