Iraq for $1 A Day

At $526.052 billion, at 1904 days, at an average population of 297 million, the daily cost of the Iraq War to every American, no matter their age, who was alive during the war has been $0.93, or just under $1. On February 5th, 2009, the Iraq war will have cost every American $2,000.00, regardless of the age of that American.

If the next President does not reduce spending on the Iraq War, by the end of his term the war will have cost every American nearly $3,400.00. Money like would, roughly speaking, purchase health care, gas or food for an entire year. Since this is per person, no matter the age of the person, this is the case for every person in every family, no matter the size of the family. Instead, this money got spent on Iraq.

And, of course, this just deals with the supplemental Iraq spending bills, not the money from the military budget that is also being spend in Iraq.

Thought that was worth noting.

The better question is ... (0.00 / 0)
why is this never discussed .. either by the candidates .. or the media?

John McCain: Bush right to veto kids health insurance expansion

the fact of the matter is (0.00 / 0)
that we don't have that money to spend - neither on this profoundly stupid war, nor on all the other things people keep comparing it to.

We've borrowed it all from all those people we shouldn't have borrowed it from, and instead of spending it over the next 8 years on things we should have spent it on we're going to be broke and trying to figure out how to finance a new economy so that 40 years from now we have well-established jobs with stable incomes which we can tax so that we can pay off the debt we've incurred fighting this profoundly stupid war.

Get real.

private contractors (0.00 / 0)
Does this figure include that as well?  For example, if I recall correctly, the Department of State signed a contract with Blackwater.  Wouldn't that be in their budget, not the supplemental or the military budget?

Just remember (0.00 / 0)
It hasn't cost illegal immigrants anything, because they don't pay taxes.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

At this point in time (4.00 / 1)
the best ways to attack the insane Iraq war is not to point out the carnage which they can hide, but the economic impact.

Good job.

John McCain doesn't care about Vets.

Add it all up and it's more than that (0.00 / 0)
Stiglitz wrote a book on the subject:

Paying for War with Loans (0.00 / 0)
Conservatives always argue there is not enough money for Social Security, Medicare, education, or other social services and yet there always seems to be enough money for war.

Taking out loans for social programs can make sense, but not so for war:

Money spent on war just creates death, destruction, and lots of PTSD. The money is completely wasted and we might as well be flushing it down the toilet. Any debt incurred haunts us for centuries.

Money spent on education, healthcare, childcare, infrastructure (sewers, roads, bridges, etc.) creates useful things that reap benefits down the line which will probably generate more revenue which can be used to pay off the loans.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime. Blowing up a fish doesn't help anyone.
