Pale skin, dark skin, who cares? I have no issue with my facial features which are obviously Asian. I'm even beginning to accept my short legs and long torso which is very Japanese. But I do have a problem with my very American beer belly. ugh...

lol, that sounds like me. I think my short muscular legs are the Hawaiian blood in me. I also blame Hawaii for my spare tire and kinky hair.

Some people immediately know that I'm Asian, while the majority have no clue and think I'm Hispanic. For the record, I'm biracial, White/Asian. I was never really considered Asian enough to hang with the Asian clique in high school, but I've always been accepted by whites. I feel that my Asian side is accentuated by people in college, like it's something exotic, be it good or bad. The majority here are white and it's not very diverse at all. It's definitely different than being in high school. It makes it difficult to meet people here, as some weren't exposed to other cultures while growing up. I never realized how many stereotypes against Asians there were until I was singled out for being half.
I'm happy with whatever Asian appearance I do have and equally satisfied with any Italian features I may have, even if it feels isolating sometimes or becomes something people solely identify me with. It's like, I get it - I'm Asian, but there is more to me, dammit. I love being Chinese though, don't get me wrong. I'm very proud of my ethnic background. and feel comfortable with my appearance. It just gets overdone when someone says constantly, "Hey, did you know that Rachel is Asian?"

I think the only time that I am self-consciously aware that I am Asian is when I visit a place with NO Asians. Even though, it's just for a split second that I realize that I look different from the average person there and I might get a few looks/stares. But once I consciously become aware of this, it just slips back to the back of my mind and that's the end of it.
I think despite my "look," I blend in well with all types of people so I never really felt "different" when hanging out with all white people, all black, all hispanic, etc.
Recently, a couple of my friends were on the Tyra Banks show and it had to do with race and their definition of looks. My friend's ego was stroked when Tyra Banks said that he was closest to "her sexual fantasy." I didn't really watch the show, but I think that most some races are more attractive than others in many people's eyes and Asian guys tend to be at the bottom of the list. However, it doesn't stop people of other races to still find Asian men attractive. I think at the end of the day, Asian men still have to get themselves out there because looks alone is really never enough to seal any deal.

On the earlier statements regarding the paleness of Filipinos regarded as "more attractive", I agree that its sad. I have aunts that have stocks of whitening soap and whatnot, and have been given bars of the soap as gifts; it was assumed that it was something I'd appreciate.
While living in DC I've gotten a lot of questions as to what my ethnicity was. And even in California, I would be asked what I was (I've been thought to be Spanish/Mexican/mix along with Filipino). Here in DC I've gotten chinese, spanish, and even peruvian!?
I do have attributes I do sometimes wish were different: being taller, having a nose less-wide, but when it comes down to it,
i love being brown

I really don't care or mind if somebody doesn't find Asian attractive. It's a matter of preference and should be respected. There are some stereotypes about Asian that I like such as intelligence and charisma. As an individualists, I rather that I rise above stereotypes and at the same time be lenient about it.

i think they mean it's sad when the attributes being valued are not "native" to the people of that particular culture. love our own and all that. but yeah, no matter how much we tell ourselves that, there will always be the desire for what we perceive as superior or novel or anything that would give us an edge over others.
Sorry for quoting such an old message. I totally forgot about this thread.
Anna got it right. Previously, I mentionned Thailand. If you watch TV in Thailand, almost all of the leading roles are given to actors born from interracial marriages.
Have to go now... I'll come back to edit and add to this later.

I think I am quite pleased being asian
, in Fact I love my skin....except when:
1. When I am watching or reading sailormoon comics (I envy her long blonde hair)
2. When Somebody ask me "Are you Korean?" (that sort of trying to differentiate me from the rest )
3. When I go to Bali and see those americans sun-tanning (oh man! I am sure my skin will become burn and never be fair again. )
4. When I am giving a presentation in front of asians (they would start to question where I am from and based my presentation on how proficient my english is)
