Well, it turns out that it just might be illegal to impersonate someone on MySpace and crush a teenage girl’s spirit so much that she ends up hanging herself.

Just when you thought the saga of Megan Meier was over with and the villain was going to get off free and clear, the culprit Lori Drew has been indicted on charges that could lead her to as much as 20 years imprisonment. Certainly no one can disagree that what Ms. Drew did was evil, at worst, and downright scummy at best.

The problem here is that the charges, at this point, are pretty flimsy at best. The charges filed, according to the LA Times, are “three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl and one count of conspiracy.” Add to that the fact that the case is being tried far outside the jurisdiction of the Missouri town where the incidents took place, and the government is going to have a very hard time bringing this case to term.

Only in the biggest stretch in the sense of the word can you call MySpace a protected system, especially when what all Drew did was click on a very prominent sign-up button, and then enter false information for the personal data.

It also calls into question First Amendment rights - how exactly do you define what sort of speech is designed to “inflict emotional distress,” and which sort of speech is designed to simply put those Steve Jobs-worshipping trolls on the VistaFan forums in their place?

I keep hearing this arguement from those who think this case is ridiculous & should be dismissed. I have only one question:
If this were a 49 year old MALE who had done this to a minor female child, would you still think it's not punishable?
I was hoping Drew would be indicted as a pedophile since she spent weeks discussing sex with this minor child.

I agree that Drew should have been charged as a pedophile. Any adult who pretends to be a child and talks about sex with a child should be charged with a sex crime.

It is my hope that Lori Drew spends a long time in prison for what she did. Mean spirited, cruel, and a disgraceful act, which a few years in prison will help to correct her disgraceful behavior.

If Drew is going to prison, so should Megan's parents. Don't forget people: her parents were the two people who IGNORED the fact that a 16 year old boy was discussing sex with their 13 year old daughter! Why didn't they know who she was talking to? She was only 13, and yet her parents had been to daft to see what was going on. Perhaps if Megan's mom read some of the bull shit that Drew was typing, she would have figured it out a long time before the suicide.

I agree that Drew has some serious mental problems, but that doesn't mean she deserved to go away for two decades.

If it was your kid, how would you explain this?

Pretty sick that you think that, but if it was your kid, your niece, your nephew, you would feel differently. Sure they need to monitor their child, but when you were 13, would you let your parents do that? Never. And Drew deserves to be in jail, an eye for an eye. She's an old woman who has nothing better to do than to mess with some kids emotions, because HER kid lost a friend. She's 49, and knows what it was like to be that age, and how girls are. What she SHOULDN'T have done was act like another 13 year old girl, and drive an emotional 13 year old to kill herself.

EVERY teenager has emotions that are that of a rollercoaster... add depression and any kinds of emotional distress, than you have a problem.

My question to you is, you honestly think that this woman deserves to stay out of jail? Plus she said some pretty graphic things to this girl, and that's pretty twisted to begin with. I think at worst they should put her away, if my mom had ever gotten that involved in my personal life when I was that age I would probably die of embarassment. Drew is not taking in consideration, what if HER child had this done to her. What if HER child killed herself. She doesn't care, and denies it all because she is heartless and is probably one of those mothers puts their child on a pedastal, and how dare megan NOT be friends with her kid right??? Come on....

This definitely will end up being a lifetime movie.

i hope lori drew gets what she desrves even prison wouldnt be enough i know personaly from loseing a daughter its heartbreaking and even after a autopsy i dont know what happened to my child and its heartbreaking just as heartbreaking is not getting any justice for the death of Megan her parents have been dealing with this so long and im so relived for them to catch a break in this . . .And you want to say the parents are some what responsible give it a break you can not possibly watch everything your child is doing you have to have some faith and trust in your children or there is no relationship these parents have suffered a great loss and for you to even put this on there shoulders is ridiculos this woman Lori drew Knew all to well about Megan and her depression problems her daughter was best friends with her at one point and for her to play this sick game with a 13yr old child is outrageous and on top of that for her to think she wasn't at fault in any way shows how sick she truley is Megan's mother sawl her child happy and upbeat and excited about this boy "josh evans" and Lori tore this child away from her happiness she pushed all her buttons and she knew what she was doing and she deserves to go to prison and rot for what she has done!

Under the rule of this indictment, if I tell all of you that I'll love you forever because you are extremely HOT!!, and then tell you to jump off a bridge because you suck, I can go to jail.

Hmm, if I date a crazy goth girl and tell her she's extremely hot, get what I want and tell her to jump off a bridge afterwards because she sucks, that's legal. Because she knows who I am.

I think psychiatrists or other fiduciary types might get in trouble under the second scenario but that's about it.

As a reply to the Meier's parents going to jail because a sixteen year old was romancing their thirteen year old daughter.... When I was younger I sure as heck would not share anything like that with my parents, do you want your mom to know your sex life? Even if they knew they probably had "the talk" and trust their daughter because they raised her right in their eyes. Drew is just a person who deserves more than "two decades" in jail, her deceit and horrible actions led to the death of another person. She got what she deserves, she is an adult and was fully aware of her actions and knew what could result. She didn't want to just break the spirits of a young child, she wanted revenge for her child's battle. Now a person is dead, if she wouldn't have gotten involved there would be a life still in the world. I don't see the logic in her side....

But only about her cell phone. Drew declined to discuss other aspects of her role surrounding the October 2006 suicide of Megan Meier, a 13-year-old girl who lived down the street. Megan had an on-and-off friendship with Drew's teenage daughter.
Megan hanged herself after she received several mean messages from the fictional boy.
A Nov. 11 story in the Suburban Journal about Megan's death exploded into a national, then international, story. As a result, Lori Drew became the target of widespread cyberspace harassment. Personal information, such as her cell-phone number, which she had used for 10 years, appeared on Internet sites.
No criminal charges have been filed in connection to Megan's death but the Los Angeles Times reported last month that a grand jury is looking at whether Drew defrauded MySpace, which is based near Los Angeles.
Beitongyujue the Megane family Kuxun perpetrators few days without results, but in almost want to give up, a small dark green card be sent to the local police. "Megane family of neighbors Luoli. Drew, she may know who the perpetrators in the end."
Police in accordance with this card, Shuntengmogua quickly put Lori• Drew and their associates Clean Sweep. It is reported that Lori Shichuyouyin did: she and the victim had fornication Megan's father, after his father abandoned; What she is angry hard-ping, she has a positive adolescent daughters, Megan and the victim was a friend , And later the two girls falling out. What Lori is burned in anger, she found Megan in the social networking site MySpace insulted her daughter.
It is inconceivable that is: to report to the police Lori. Drew, and even her own daughter Sarah! The 15-year-old girl occasionally discovered the secret of the mother, that her name Josh • Evans, contacted Megan through her page on MySpace.com,and then said :He love her.
May 15, 2008, Sarah has the burden of proof in court, the mother of crime. She said Why doing that was to save her mother, What is more important is:she felt missed her friend Megan……

I am surprised and shocked to read some of these comments. Has anyone heard or listened to what Megan's mother's statement was.In her words " I was upset with my daughter's language so I told her to get off the computer, she got upset and said I was suppose to be on her side and then she ran upstairs. How do we know the Mother didn't cause the girl's suicide. The last words she heard were her Mother's harsh word's to her. I say the Mother was the cause.People need to wake up and put the blame where it should go, "On the Mother".The mother in my opinion does not want to take any blame.

Duh!Lori Drew caused this poor teenager to kill herself! What if this was your daughter how would you feel then huh!If I was in megans moms place I would be pissed that a 47 yr old woman caused the death of my child!Yea I am outraged that this lady could cause such a terrible ordeal!I have lost 2 kids, not from suicide one at birth and the other from c.p. at almost 4 yrs old and I know it is so painful to lose a child! It hurts so bad and makes you wonder yourself if life is worth going on!Cant anyone understand the pain this couple feels b/c I do and my heart is heavy for them!Lori Drew needs to go 2 jail! She is a pediphile a child killer a hacker, and to verbally abuse a 13 yr old child ,the laws need to protect kids and not let adults verbally and mentally abuse a child! This child is gone isnt anyone thinking a life is lost thanks to the immortality of this childish 47 yr old lady!!She is practically an old lady and abusing a child .Where are the laws to protect this child???

Sure you would want to blame the mom but if megans mom would have caused that then she would never go through the trouble of posting things online about her losing her daughter. It is very evident this mother loved her daughter megan and was being a mom and not a child as Lori drew was.
