RUNNING RESUME
Runner since:
Summer of '73
Why I started: High school cross country
Miles per week, average: 50-60
My running club: Founded running club at my college in ’89

Personal records:

  • Marathon... 3:05:01 (1983)
  • Half-marathon... 1:27:10 (en route to my marathon PR)
  • 10-K... 39:49 (1982)
  • 5-K... 17:55 (1983)
  • Mile... 5:34 (during my 5-K PR)

My last race was... 2008 Flying Pig Half-Marathon
My best race ever was... The 1992 Cincinnati Brewery District 14-K: 57:15 (6:34 pace). I'd run a 5-miler Friday night and had little expectations for the 14-K on Sunday. Began in the middle of the field and just felt effortless as I worked my way toward the front. One of those elusive "in the zone" moments.
For me, the best thing about running is...  it saved me from myself.
My single most euphoric moment as a runner was... qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 1993, after two failed attempts. The tears flowed those last 385 yards when I finally realized a lifelong dream.
My running idol is...
Toshiko Seko

I really like that motivational quote.

Nice PR's from back in the day - keep running my man !!!!

Moth, you've been a big inspiration for me (& many) since I've been reading RW online. Especially ever since you told me about your 20 mile stroller runs! Keep doing what you're doing because your good attitude and kindness affect all of us.

Didn't know you were an artist, and I didn't know you had the same 5k pr as me!

Congrats Mike! Thank you for helping me develop into a runner.

I love your quote, "Running saved me from myself." That's perfect. I see you're strongly influenced by Japan. Have you lived there? It's an amazing country with so many FAST runners.

Thanks for all the kind words. I don't know what to say... very surprised to be recognized by my peers. To answer Michael's question, I was born in Yokohama but we moved to SoCal when I was 9 months. Grew up there. My mother is Japanese.
