Old Notebook
I found an old notebook (before my discovery of Moleskine); and I was mesmerized by the old me. At 24, I was just starting to create a budget, pay off my credit cards, and save for retirement. At the time, my parents were paying my car payment and car insurance. I wouldn't have been able to make ends meet because my roommate had skipped town and I couldn't find another one. I cancelled my cable, turned down my heat, and paid $785/month for rent.
I was making about $33,000 and contributing about $5k to my retirement accounts. I hadn't opened my Roth IRA, and I had no serious savings accounts. I was single, working on being happy, developing personal hobbies, and struggling to find out what I wanted to do with my life.
After reading my old entries, I know I'm much happier now. I feel more secure about money. I take my boyfriend for granted. I used to struggle to fill my time alone. Now I enjoy my time alone and get annoyed if people impose on my alone time. I have also settled on a field for graduate school. I also was much more concerned about personal hygiene habits--shaving, hair cuts, styling hair, wearing make-up, etc. I'm still a girly girl, but I won't die if my toe nail polish is smudged!

Its always nice (well, maybe just sometimes) to find those remnants of your past self. I've done that a few times...in high school I found my elementary school journal (from about 2nd to 3rd grade), and when I was home one summer from college I found my old high school journal. Its always amazing to see how much you've grown, and how your thoughts change. It also gave me hope that no matter how you feel now, things will get better.
I'm mostly embarrassed by anything I read from high school (or before), but I'm fascinated by college and beyond.
It is amazing how much growth can occur in just a few years.
It is always interesting to back in time and read where you were. I love realizing the discovery and growth.
PS-I have to look into moleskine. I learn so much for your blog!
I love this post. Why? Because I am in the exact place that you were at 24! I am 22, just starting to budget and thinking about saving for retirement. I am making $33K per year and will hopefully fully fund a Roth IRA by the end of the year. I do have an ING savings account, I am single and I am trying to develop hobbies and figure out what I want to do with my life! My parents still pay my car insurance and I pay $800/month in rent.
Thank you for this post. It makes me look forward to what the future holds! :)
