Grand Jury Indicts Gresham Teen Charged in Shooting Incident at Springwater High School

The situation began on April 11th when Gresham Police Officers responded to Springwater Trail High School over a reported gunshot.

(GRESHAM) - The Multnomah County Grand Jury heard testimony yesterday regarding the charges filed against 15-year old Chad Escobedo, who was arrested last Tuesday for shooting at Springwater Trail High School and injuring several students.

The Grand Jury returned the following indictments:
One count of Attempted Aggravated Murder, one count of Attempted Murder, two counts of Assault in the 2nd degree, two counts of Assault in the 3rd degree, and two counts of Unlawful use of a weapon.

Members of the Gresham Police Dept say they wish to acknowledge the assistance of members of the public and witnesses who came forward with help and information.

The situation began on April 11th when Gresham Police Officers responded to Springwater Trail High School over a reported gunshot.

A window on the south side of the school had been shot out and a student reported to have minor lacerations from the glass when it shattered.

When police arrived they learned from a witness that a young male was seen leaving the scene shortly after.

Both the Springwater Trail High School and Hogan Cedars Elementary were placed in lock down. Gresham Barlow School representatives assisted with the lock down and later assisted police with evacuations.

During the incident a parent of 15-year old Chad Antonio Escobedo called to say they believed Chad was responsible for the incident. Police responded to his residence where he was detained for questioning.

Information was given by Chad Escobedo that he had left the weapon behind. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) personnel were called in to conduct a search of the area around the school. The weapon was later located by police and identified as a .270 caliber rifle.

A total of 10 students suffered minor injuries from shards of glass. 2 of those students were transported to Mount Hood Medical Center for minor lacerations; the other 8 were treated by emergency medical personnel at the school. All students were evacuated by police and school officials and placed on school buses where they were met by parents at a designated location.

15 year old Chad Antonio Escobedo remains incarcerated in the Donald E. Long Juvenile detention facility.
