Statement on Iraq Made by Cheney in 1994 Making the News

The unedited clip made by the Vice-President in 1994 outlines a series of reasons invading Iraq would be a very bad idea.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Vice-President Dick Cheney has been steadfast in his support of the U.S. invasion of Iraq under President George W. Bush.

In fact, according to an Interview with Vice-President Dick Cheney, NBC, "Meet the Press," from March 16, 2003, he said that the mission would end with total success. He convinced the American public for the most part, that our forces would be greeted as liberators.

Here is an excerpt from Cheney's appearance on that show where he talked about the determination to go to Iraq with or without the U.N.

Cheney: "And over time, given Saddam’s posture there, given the fact that he has a significant flow of cash as a result of the oil production of Iraq, it’s only a matter of time until he acquires nuclear weapons. And in light of that, we have to be prepared, I think, to take the action that is being contemplated. Doesn’t insist that he be disarmed and if the U.N. won’t do it, then the United States and other partners of the coalition will have to do that."

Cheney's statement on that program were the words of an administration official intent on waging a war in Iraq while the nation's forces were already fighting Anti Coalition Militias in Afghanistan.

He emphasized during the interview with Tim Russert that our presence would be well received.

Cheney: "Now, I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators."

Cheney also talked about his concern that Iraq could eventually be a danger to Americans here on our soil.

Cheney: "And we don’t have the option anymore of simply laying back and hoping that events in Iraq will not constitute a threat to the U.S." "Clearly, 12 years after the Gulf War, we’re back in a situation where he does constitute a threat."

Interestingly, a video clip of Dick Cheney recorded in 1994 is now getting big play on YouTube, shows what sounds like a totally different person talking about the exact same thing. In '94 Cheney was against invading Iraq, and he says a number of problems would keep that from being a successful military idea.

GWC: Await your ID, from behind that convenient "anon"-mask. Then yr credibility might be strong enough to support your attack-attitude with something more than innuendo.

To all: This was fwd'd by a friend, as a sig-line: "To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero . . . assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an un-winnable urban guerilla war. It could only plunge that part of the world into even greater instability." George Bush Sr., in A WORLD TRANSFORMED, (1998).

I say, let's bring Saddam back (been saying this for over a year! too bad they hung him!) and give him a year to straighten things out. I'm sure he could murder another 5-10% of his population given the right armaments, and put Blackstone out of business. Then Cheney will have no fat-cat job to go back to at Halliburton, Europe will be appeased, and Cheney can go on a multimillion dollars speaking tour and bilk the public just like Clinton!

Washington views the Kurds' ambitions for a federation as an effort to undermine Iraqi unity - Washington's great goal. This is the same Washington that doesn't yet know who is a friend and who an enemy in Iraq, but is conveniently ignoring the Kurds and even their request for an American military base to be built in Kurdistan.

Impeach. Prosecute.

Anon et al: Totally agree --but make that three-or-more...as his own ineffable personal/professional history makes completely obvious --so much so that any voter fully awake should surely have noticed.

To the editor: In the future could you not put such a big picture of Cheney. It creeps me out! Thanks! <{>

Editor: Our sincerest apologies!

"two faced" is an overly diplomatic understatemant. I, speaking personally of course, would credit the anus pore with severel dozen, up to a hundred maybe. The search engine request was routed to a classified website, so I can't be sure if my stats are correct. Can I get a witness?

The difference of course is that in 1994 under Clinton Halliburton would not have received all the no bid contracts while under Shrub/Cheney they would. Seems to be the only thing that changed. Cheney always has been two-faced.

Henry Ruark August 16, 2007 7:22 am (Pacific time)

To all: Seems very clear, now, that we have been both Cheney'd and Rove'd, over and over, for what fitted their political needs of the moment. Will we ever learn ? No time like the present to get strong start !
